On Tuesday afternoon, I attended a screening of Top Gun presented in 3D and IMAX (well, the fake IMAX that's not quite as big as the real IMAX, but it costs the same amount). In my life, I would guess I've seen Top Gun around 15 times. Though, I can't remember the last time I really paid attention to Top Gun. Top Gun makes great background noise while one pays his bills, naps or surfs for Internet porn. (I am not admitting to any of those three things.) Anyway, to mark this occasion, watching Top Gun on the big screen, I kept a diary of my experience.
Over the next few days, we'll certainly learn more and more about why Mr. Scott made the decision that he made - reports are already surfacing that he had inoperable brain cancer. But, I always assumed that the man who made the first movie that my father and I both enjoyed together had more left. I just always assumed there would be another Tony Scott movie coming. And now, knowing that there won't be, makes me incredibly sad.
Madonna is at the top of the Billboard charts, "Titanic" may be the highest-grossing movie of the week and "The Mummy," Twins, "Dumb and Dumber," "Summer School," "Anchorman," "Top Gun," "Total Recall" and even "Phantom of the Opera" are either getting sequels or being remade. Nothing is new, and that's sad.
