These moves will target areas of the body needed to hurdle, crouch, lunge and jump your way to victory and once mastered, you'll be fully prepared for the obstacles in the Warrior Dash, Tough Mudder, Spartan Race or a local version of these adventure races sweeping the nation.
Now, I knew, knew, knew that I could ride the trail much better than I was. Yet I could not. I knew, knew, knew that the fear was in my head and if I could just let it dissipate, then all would be well. Easier said than done.
As more and more people turn away from marathons and triathlons to more extreme obstacle races, expect the GORUCK Challenge to keep growing, as individuals seek to test themselves not just as athletes, but as team members and leaders.
Here in NYC we may not be accustomed to sprinting through the woods, scaling 12-foot walls, or braving weekend events that involve mud, blood and ice baths. I certainly wasn't before I trained for my first Tough Mudder.
What really stood out to me at the Tough Mudder, an 11-mile mountain run peppered with 23 crazy obstacles, was the teamwork. I would not have been able to scale those walls without the encouragement of my team.
