Good decisions require good data. Toyota and NHTSA's recent struggles validate this simple principle. The problem, unfortunately, is not isolated to one automobile manufacturer -- or one drug company.

Most sales are aimed at transaction marketing pioneered by Wall St. banks in the 1970's. Hook 'em in -- cram the teaser deposit rate or the cheap car down their throat. Then screw 'em when they complain.
