In 2005 I founded Give an Hour to provide help and hope to returning service members, veterans and their families. Over 6,500 mental health professionals have joined the Give an Hour network and are providing free mental health services across the country.

We survived a superstorm and can emerge from it stronger. We survived one of the most contentious and expensive political races ever and can emerge from it more united. Neither will be easy. But both are possible. How? By serving our communities, vets and civilians alike.

Veterans Day is flanked this year by the Election on one side and Thanksgiving on the other, both occasions that suck a lot of oxygen out of the air. But that can't alter what this day means to Veterans, nor what it means to their families.

I salute you, women in the military, veterans, wives, mothers, girlfriends and daughters. We all salute and thank you. Happy Veteran's Day!

At the end of the day, as all veterans, I am a testament to the community that has taken me in, sheltered me from the storm when needed and encouraged me to brave the tempest when it was best course of action to advance my life.

It's time we closed the circle of care and made sure all direct care workers earn a living wage and basic labor protections. If we don't do right by our caregivers, how can we expect them to do right by the veterans who have sacrificed so much for us?

The single best way for national leaders to genuinely honor the sacrifices of veterans and their families on November 11, 2012 is to step up and end the cycle of mental health crises that have plagued American society since 1919.

Hiring is only half of this battle. Making veterans feel included and supported once they join the civilian workforce is ultimately essential to their success, so we're now growing our veterans inclusion efforts.

Try whining to Mr. Lincoln about the ideological war between red and blue states. He might point out that the war between the Blue and the Gray involved real bullets and real blood, as well as a moral chasm.

In all my years as an enlisted Marine and an Army chaplain, I never once heard a combat veteran call another service member a hero, unless it was a joke. Heroes are superheroes and as such, they do not experience war and death as a human being. Heroes do not bleed, grieve, or feel alone.
