I do worry about the various ways this can go horribly wrong. I do worry that studios will eventually start seeing this as a business model when dealing with geek properties. "Pay us $5 million and we won't cancel Revolution!"

From An Unexpected Journey's talented filmmakers and canny copyrights to the spiritually exhausted Tolkien estate, everyone's fighting for Tolkien's Middle-earth legendarium as if their economies counted on it.

This is frankly a terrible film, but ever more disheartening because the material for a decent comedy so obviously exists within the botched final product. The Incredible Burt Wonderstone is a missed opportunity.

Director Bryan Singer delivered an exciting and entertaining movie with good performances, despite the fact that no one was calling for Jack and the Beanstalk -- or really any fairy tale, for that matter -- to be made into a movie.

Like John Carter and Battleship, Jack the Giant Slayer was basically a $200 million variation on Generic Blockbuster: The Movie. Unlike Disney and Universal respectively, Warner Bros. seemed to see this one coming well in advance.

So much of Beautiful Creatures is so unexpectedly terrific that it's almost a tragedy when the picture eventually falls victim to its own plot.

Look, I could go on listing the ways in which this film is terrible, but why ramble? Just know that it's badly acted and badly written, with 90 percent of the entertainment value coming in the form of accidental and unintentional humor arising out of incompetence.

Those wanting a faithful adaptation of the iconic comic book will get their money's worth.  As a filmed adaptation, it is stymied only by a curious bit of miscasting and material that just-plain doesn't work as well on the screen as it did on the page.
