The courts will sort out whether Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation companies have been guilty of the seriously criminal actions of which they are being accused. But there is one other issue that should be kept in mind: high journalistic standards matter.

While we are indeed currently politically divided and somewhat polarized, this is actually our normal state as a nation -- and on the polarization scale, we're nowhere near the "most divided" we've ever been. Far from it.

The teabaggers and the angry conservatives sure make a lot of noise these days. And much of the noise is about them making noise. It sure seems like the online channel is a key element in the vitriol.
