Low-income families and geographically underserved students (disproportionately students of color) who have little access to local resources receive few opportunities to explore the important benefits of the arts. This sends a very strong message: Classical ballet is not for you.
Artistry is not dead -- nor is it dying. Yet contemporary life makes it more and more challenging. To make sure that artistry continues to reign supreme despite these challenges, we need to keep the dialogue alive among dance professionals.
Sadly, many ballet schools and companies do not seem to be doing enough to preserve ballet's greatest asset -- its ability to transport an audience into their world. Ballet technique that explodes with meaning instead of fireworks is vastly lacking.
