One of Twitter's largest trending topics a few weeks ago was Jessica Simpson not wearing any make-up on the cover of Marie Claire. How brave! Last time I checked there are millions of women who don't wear make-up on a daily basis and feel just find about themselves and how they look.
Britney's unretouched photos for her Candies campaign - made headlines as well. Thank god!
Allure magazine's nude issue has started a press frenzy thanks to Emmanuelle Chriqui, Colbie Caillat, and Kara DioGuardi taking it off.
The women claim to feel liberated - that posing nude shows a different side to them and they feel so proud to have taken the risk. When was the last time men posed nude in GQ or Details as a means of liberation and feeling good about themselves? Maybe because men don't need to get naked to deal with self esteem.
Kathy Griffin is having a pap smear done poolside for her TV show - and she's going to bedazzle her vagina just like Jennifer Love Hewitt suggests in her book "The Day I Shot Cupid."
Griffin claims this is to raise awareness and encourage women to get pap smears. Umm. There is nothing about seeing Kathy Griffin spread her legs with fake diamonds on her vagina that makes me want to run out and get a pap smear. Vomiting is what comes to mind first.
Have we lost all self-respect? Has today's celebrity women just embraced that being a celebrity means being totally objectified to get headlines?
There are far more pressing issues than not wearing make-up, decorating your private parts, and getting liberated by posing nude (I thought nude was for Playboy so young boys could get it on with themselves).
Truly brave and 'taking a risk' would be if these women actually talked about something that matters, something scary, something that is considered shameful by our society. How about domestic violence and drug and alcohol addiction? These are the topics that still get spoken about in hushed tons in the kitchen at family dinners.
Did you know that only 8% of women who have a problem with addiction actually seek help because they are too ashamed to ask? And that, based on DUI arrests, the number of women abusing alcohol has risen 28% over the past 10 years? But it's taboo right? No one talks about that. No one talks about, to quote the Rolling Stones, "Mother's Little Helper." Celebrity women who are addicts get taunted by the media, smashed into pieces, when they actually just need help. And women who pose nude are heralded as heroes?
How about domestic violence? About 4.8 million women are battered by an intimate partner every year. Less than 20% of these women come forward and got medial treatment for their severe injuries. Over 2,000 women are murdered annually in the United States by an intimate partner. And no, these are not stereotyped lower-income women - these are women from all walks of life.
My hat goes to off to Reese Witherspoon who launched the UNIFEM campaign to end violence against women in collaboration with cosmetics giant Avon. I seriously doubt you will be seeing her posing nude for Allure or Playboy anytime soon and getting bedazzled, she has more important things to do.
