Sofia Vergara Loves Playing Stereotypes

Posted: 03/05/2013 2:13 pm

That laugh, that smile, that accent and that body! You'd be hard-pressed to find anyone in this world who doesn't think that Sofia Vergara is simply amazing! Noted by Forbes as television's highest paid actress of 2011, Sofia Vergara has found her niche and made a killing in it! The only thing is, her niche is based almost exclusively on the perpetuation of Latina stereotypes. No bueno!

Now, don't get me wrong -- I'm proud of Sofia for making a name for herself and holding her own in the perro-come-perro world that is Hollywood, but a big part of me laments the means by which Sofia has "made it." Sofia biggest -- and most popular -- role to date has been playing Gloria Delgado-Pritchett on ABC's comedy darling, Modern Family. As Gloria, Sofia perpetuates just about every stereotype about Latinas ever dreamed up. Loud? Check! Fiery and passionate? Check! Bombshell body wrapped in a tight cheetah-print dress? Claro! But what bothers me the most about Sofia's portrayal of Gloria -- or a sexy Latina maid, or a sexy Latina penguin, or sexy Latina lamppost -- is that she doesn't mind the fact that she's perpetuating stereotypes about Latinas being fiery sex kittens, because as she tells the U.K.'s Daily Express, "Latina characters are usually sexy and voluptuous on screen, but then that's just how Latin women are."

Now, I realize that there are far worse things that a Latina can be called than sexy, voluptuous and even -- and I shudder as I type this -- spicy, but the fact of the matter remains that stereotypes are narrow-minded classification of an entire group of people. I'm not 100 percent sure as to when Sofia was voted the ambassador for all things Latina, but I'm not comfortable with her making broad, sweeping generalizations about Latinas, even if she intends them to be compliments.

I guess the reason that I, personally, find the stereotype wrapped in a compliment to be disturbing is because at one point in my life I believed that particular stereotype to be true; I truly thought that all Latinas were supposed to be sexy, voluptuous and sultry. And as a quiet, awkward, pale and freckled teenager, I felt like the irregular sock of the Latina community! Where was my curly hair? Where was café con leche complexion? Where in the hell were my nalgas? Was I sexy enough to qualify for my Latina card? From the age of 18 up until the age of about 23, I was tanning (read: burning) my skin in the hopes of achieving a JLo glow, curling my hair to get that pelo vivo and squatting my ass on at the gym. All of this to convince other people to identify me with the ethnicity that I was born into. It was ridiculous! I was ridiculous.

The problem here is that this idea of the curvy, sexy and sultry Latina denies many Latinas their cultural identification based on their physical appearances and sexual attractiveness, alone. In essence, this sort of thinking traps our culture within our bodies, ignoring the values, ethics, and traditions that contribute to our sense of culture and community.

I don't necessarily begrudge the gorgeous actress for thinking that all Latinas are sexy, desirable women -- she has the right to voice her own opinion. I do, however, wish that she would refrain from summing up our shared culture with a superficial statement about sex appeal, and I don't know, step out of her cheetah-print upholstered comfort zone long enough to explore roles that demonstrate other facets of the Latina community. Sofia, just think of how brightly you'll shine once you come out from inside of that pigeonhole!

I understand where the author is coming from. It would be nice to see Latinas branch out and play some different roles.

LOL it would be nice to see roles offered as an actress in Hwood that were not endorsing the stereotypes that are actually written for us. Eva Longoria is currently casting a show ABOUT MAIDS!

Look. Sofia is 'crying' all the way to the bank. So let her play her roles and rake in the money. Many latinas would give their eye teeth to have such a break! Chill. Most who star in novelas run here and live here for years and never get the opportunity cause they can't master the english language even with a heavy accent. So they go back and contiue their novela career.

Ms. Ramirez is right, I would go so far as to say that Sofia Vergara is worse than a stereotype, she is a caricature. I am not Latina, but as a proud woman of African descent, I find some of her lines off-putting, albeit not sufficiently for me to stop watching Modern Family. In Ms. Vergara's defense, she is not alone, there are countless negative stereotypes perpetuated by actors/individuals of African descent, like Love & Hip Hop Atlanta, to name but one.

I completely agree. She plays into a role of what the majority feels a Latina should be and act like. She does not represent my mother or any the Latinas that I know. Great Article.

Did you see the one where they plaid sherades and she didn't know who Hemmingway was? My Colombian grandmother that died last year at 76 knew who he was. They are blatantly pushing forth the stereotype of ignorant, Latina, golddigger.

Well call me crazy and I'm a guy so I love her. She's beautiful but it goes beyond that. I love her character. If you watch Modern Family you know that yes she's Loud, Brash but her character is engaging. You missed the one where it came out that Claire called her a gold digger. In the end she said she loved her husband and all of these things were not as important to her as her family was. You missed the one where Clare got her to come out of her shell and admit that her son Manny was not perfect and that not everything he does is great like his poetry. She came to understand that sometimes your kids make you crazy and that you don't always like them. Normal. She is a wonderful character and she is not shallow. By all accounts without knowing her I bet she is a lovely person. You never hear bad things about her that I have seen. She knew what she wanted in life and went after this role knowing that it may not be her break out role but that it could earn her a lot of money and thus security. You go sophia and I will continue to enjoy you on Modern Family and anything else you choose to do.

Sofia Vergara happens to embody some of these stereotypes, but if you look to other Latinas I am sure you will find role models who suit you better.

In the meantime, lay off my Sofia Vergara!

Aren't you perpetuating a stereotype as well? You know, the one that young women - or young people in general - can't help but being influenced by what they see on TV?

You've tried to fit on the Latina stereotype once, but you've grown older and wiser. Not everyone is like you though, and I'm sure many girls and boys all over the world couldn't care less about what "society" believes to be a standard of beauty.

Stereotypes are stereotypes because they are usually based on some truth. Are all Latina women like the character she plays? Of course not. Are there women like that? Of course. So if you object to her playing that character you're saying that it's not ok for a sitcom to comedically reflect a reality. I'm a male, college educated, Latino. I have no objection when a movie or TV shows Latino gang bangers (remember any of those 80's movies that tried to be politically correct by showing fantasy, multiethnic gangs, usually run by an evil white guy?). Stereotypes become a problem when they are used to put down an entire group. But reflecting the reality that creates the stereotype shouldn't bother people unless it's done with malice.

Yes there is a reason why stereotypes exist and the p.c police have been trying to fight them for a long time saying those who agree with stereotypes are racist.
