Nancy Grace Owes the Houston Family an Apology: Whitney Houston's Death to Be Ruled an Accident

Nancy Grace owes Whitney Houston's family a huge apology. Whitney Houston's death will be ruled an accident; not a homicide, not a suicide, but an accident. The country has been accustomed to Nancy's ofttimes senseless yelling and screaming about every topic she covers. If fact, the only time Nancy Grace was graceful and gracious was when she was on Dancing With the Stars and needed the votes to advance. This time, Grace went too far with her initial speculations that Whitney Houston might have been murdered. Her ranting statements were without any proof and spewed forth in a frail attempt to create drama and controversy. She desperately wanted to be part of the biggest story in the world and went on CNN to spark an uproar. 2012-02-29-nancygrace.jpgGrace said, "I'd like to know who was around her, who if anyone gave her drugs -- following alcohol and drugs -- and who let her slip or pushed her underneath that water. Apparently no signs of force or trauma to the body." She continued, "who let Whitney go under her water?" These outlandish comments were without merit and in complete disregard to the feelings of the family and people who loved Whitney Houston. There was an instant backlash and CNN later distanced itself from Grace's comments, as anchor Don Lemon said: "That is not CNN's reporting. We don't know that to be true."

Grace remained defiant even after learning that the death would not be considered a homicide. She stated, "It is not a homicide and I'm thankful for that, but I still want the truth." Grace was aware that Los Angeles assistant chief coroner Ed Winter confirmed to ABC that officials found prescription bottles, but said there wasn't anything "alarming" or "out of the ordinary" about them. Yet, she continued to lead her one-woman attack against Whitney Houston. She even went so low as to interview singer, Darlene Lane (a very close friend of the family and a "godmother" to Houston) and suggested foul-play. Her first question was quite insidious. She asked, "A lot of people are attacking Whitney Houston and the morning after claiming her own lifestyle was the cause of death. I disagree with that Ms. Love. I wonder about all the people around her using her and why she ended up under water, Darlene Love."

The truth is, "a lot of people" were not attacking Whitney Houston. Grace, for the first time, in a long time, wasn't gaining momentum, nor any followers. She was traveling a long, dark, mean-spirited road to villanize Whitney Houston alone. Those who chose to malign Ms. Houston found out the hard way that there would be repercussions for assaulting the legacy of an American Icon like Whitney Houston. John & Ken, a popular duo of KFI-AM (640), a Los Angeles-based radio talk show, were suspended by the station for comments they made about Houston. On the show, they talked about Houston's past drug problems, and said that she was "cracked out for 20 years." Appropriately, KFI management released a statement admonishing the actions of their star radio personalities. "John Kobylt and Ken Chiampou have been suspended for making insensitive and inappropriate comments about the late Whitney Houston," KFI said in a statement. "Management does not condone, support or tolerate statements of this kind." Soon thereafter, Kobylt, speaking on behalf of the duo, said, "We made a mistake, and we accept the station's decision. We used language that was inappropriate, and we sincerely apologize to our listeners and to the family of Ms. Houston."

Nancy Grace, too, should have already offered an apology. She knows personally that creating drama for the sake of ratings can be emotionally harmful and sometimes deadly to her targeted family. In 2006, Grace came under fire when the mother of a missing toddler, Melinda Duckett, killed herself the day after an attacking interview with Grace, wherein she berated Duckett. Duckett's death prompted her family to file a wrongful death suit against CNN and Grace claiming that the intense media interest, and the interview with Grace, particularly, was the reason for her suicide. The case was settled by setting up a $200,000 trust fund devoted to finding her son Trenton.

Whitney Houston's journey to success, her voice, her music and her graciousness are what made her great. Her tumultuous private life, her problems and her weaknesses are what made her human. Whitney Houston will be missed by her family, her fans and her colleagues who continue to share stories of how Whitney Houston changed their lives. Come on Nancy, do the right thing -- say "I'm sorry."

First, Nancy Grace has said numerous times she is a huge Whitney Houston fan. I don't think she's out to exploit her death. It was Nancy who revealed the timeline changed, and that the first responders did not even find WH in the bathroom, but on the bedroom floor.

I'm a Nancy fan, and while I agree her comment was outrageous, she backed herself into a corner and just did not apologize that it was perhaps insensitive.

That being said, its a shame that a mother has a lost a daughter, a daughter has lost her mom. All those hangers on around her, which include her very own family, and no one kept a close eye. What a waste.

I watch Nancy Grace but I don't think she should have even been covering Whitney Houston's untimely death. No one knows better than all that saw Whitney's decline can only conclude that it involved drugs.

She didn't harm anyone in her remarks, least of all Whitney Houston's family because I doubt they even listened to her show. Everyone knew what most likely caused her death so Nancy Grace's speculation was nothing more than her views as a former prosecutor. She helps people more than she harms.

You wrote this blog to condemn one person that you don't like, and so the Nancy bashers have a place to vent. That's the truth here!!!

I'd like to know how she was talking to her people, getting ready for a show and while she is taking a bath with people that are supposed to be "watching her" she's let to be in the bathroom for an hour....i think it's a fair question and none of those people have come out and said anything. I never heard Nancy say she thought she was murdered, big deal, Nancy speculates on every case, she was just talking like everyone else was at the time.

Summerwind. I don't think you have an understanding of what "her people" said occurred in reference to timeline. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Its great to read different perspectives.

I have a friend who has a standing joke with her husband because when she gets in the shower she stays in there until all the hot water is gone. As for being "let in the bathroom" does anybody regulate how long YOU are "allowed" to spend in the bathroom before somebody comes looking for you?

Why isn't Nancy Grace on Fox? That seems a more appropriate network for her show.

FOX would not touch her, you have to sink to CNN level to get her.

I really dislike Nancy Grace. She is so sure she is right about EVERYTHING. She knows it all. Others know nothing.

Excellent article. Sadly, Nancy, for some unknown reason feels justified in exploiting tragedy. The loss of Whitney has devastated her mother, daughter, extended family and millions of fans. I am going to remember Whitney Houston for her music and her beauty. She gave more joy to the world than perhaps she experienced, and that is a tragedy. How many people can make that claim?

"The country has been accustomed to Nancy's ofttimes senseless yelling and screaming about every topic she covers. "

I became "accustomed" to it by changing the channel.

This woman has nothing to say that I'm interested in hearing.

I've never understood the interest in Nancy Grace, and in this case, she injected herself into a sad, untimely death, and her ugly comments could only have caused distress to an already grieving family.

Nancy Grace owes everyone an apology. The programmers who put Nancy Grace on the air owe us an apology. I suspect we're not getting one

I didn't realized they held us down and forced us to watch certain programs nowadays, i think we still have hands to change the channel don't we?

summerwind, I refuse to ever watch her, doesn't mean her actions aren't relayed through the news community, that is always the news, what she has done wrong this time, who she badmouthed, falsely accused, she should look into her own history, before talking of others!

Don't hold your breath for that apology. Just remember that every person watching Nancy Grace and her ilk have the ability to change the channel. Sadly we have become a nation of voyeurs, too many of us eager to watch fatuous twaddle about nonentities.

"Nancy Grace owes Whitney Houston's family a huge apology."

Nothing coming. She'll double down before that can be done.

Without a doubt, Grace rushed to judgement and was relentless in trying to prove herself to be right. She's turned into her own character, in her own movie and has lost touch of why she's here: to reveal the truth, not make it. Good job, Tanya.

I can't stand Nancy Grace but I also think that Whitney wouldn't have ended up under water had she not been sipping wine after taking a Xanax. Hell I did the exact same thing last night, I'm not saying it isn't pleasurable just saying you can't over-do-it (which she did).
07:00 PM on 03/01/2012
That's not what Grace said - she definitely implied that someone near Houston had either killed her or was otherwise responsible for her death.
08:54 PM on 03/01/2012
So...how is that murder, as Grace suggested?

Grace appeals to the lumbering, knuckle-dragging demographic who think making pronouncements on legal matters with which they are not intimately involved is still "journalism".

Nancy Grace doesn't believe in the presumption of innocence, and has 'educated' her fans to conflate accusation and guilt. Now, not happy with spouting her universal guilt theories, or raging over the good faith decisions of jurors, she's manufacturing crimes to declare people guilty of. DA, ME, judge, jury, executioner - this b otch does it all.

She sure said the very wrong thing,. And I have watched the video where she's reporting and she implied that someone pushed Whitney's head down the water, I believe tha Nancy was the only one that suggested that criminal intent had happened.
08:40 PM on 03/03/2012
Actually she owes everyone everything. She thinks "accused" or "suspicious" means guilty. Somebody should re-hash for her the rape case against the 3 Duke lacrosse players. Everybody "knew" they were guilty and yet when it was all over with they were proved to be innocent and it was actually the district attorney who was manufactoring evidence and mishandlign what he had. He was even disbarred. There is one hell of a difference between being an advocate and being a bully.
