WATCH: Why It's Time to Throw Out the Question 'What's My Calling?'

Posted: 07/17/2012 7:50 am

Are you wondering what your calling is?

In this video, I talk about why asking the question "What's my calling?" leaves so many of us feeling stressed and unfulfilled -- and why it's really the wrong question to be asking.

I'll tell you the question I've learned to ask instead, a question that helps bring more joy into my own life and into the lives of my clients too.

Watch here.

I was quite skeptical when I began to watch this but, I have to admit, with 60 looming ever closer, I was still asking myself that question..what is my "real" calling, as though there was only one right answer so this video definitely caught my attention when all of a sudden I saw how we limi ourselves when we ask that question.

I LOVED turning the idea of a "special calling" that is somewhere out in the future upside down by instead asking what is calling right now because it keeps me firmly planted in the present.

Well said and deeply appreciated! I don't know what my calling is...but I know exactly what is calling me right now!

I'm getting so fed up by clicking on an article to READ on HP and find myself assaulted by endless videos. Another perfect example of that.

I don't have to ask myself 'what is calling me now'. I can stick with 'what's my calling'.

And I'm not doing the stupid homework!

How about "What's your sign?". Can we still ask that one?

The last calling I had was my deadbeat brother-in-law asking to borrow money. I have nothing but derision for the author of this worthless fluff piece, the piece itself and anyone who has to ask themselves, "What's my calling?"

Spot on, Tara. Over my life, I have had many "callings," and there are many more to come. Asking the question "what is my calling right now" is very useful.

You are right, one can get really stressed out with the questions "what is my calling?" and "am I living my calling?".

Calling? What calling? Avon calling? Could it be the expectations of others whispering in our ears as we sleep that makes us wanna boogie on down the pike?

I know what it is, without a doubt.

Unfortunately, people who have no respect for my life, or for my being, keep trying to force it to be something other than what I've known it to be all my life.

And I really wish they'd stop.
It's very insulting.

so MAORI, what is it?.... i'm interested in knowing.

I know that this may sound a little strange to most, but I live by a simple precept that was put to light by none other than Aleister Crowley "Do as thou wilt is the whole of the law". This can be taken many different ways, but everyone is a star in their own universe, and everyone has their own true will. For many it is the hardest thing that they will ever try and find, but for some (such as yourself it can come quite easily), and Crowley puts it in a simplified way. I wont say this verbatim, but it can be looked at like this. Imagine yourself as a young child and you know from the moment that you pick up a paint brush that you want to be a painter, because you just come to life and you experience a huge fulfillment that is not found elsewhere. Now as you grow older your parents and friends try and deter you from the life of being a painter, and they tell you that being a doctor is what you need to do because you will be successful, famous and never have to want for anything. You are now at a crossroads, and need to decide what direction you will go. If you decide to follow the direction of your friends and family you may very well indeed be famous, rich, and never want for anything, but you will not be happy. Follow your own hearts desire.
