This evening, I spoke with Florida Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz about the tragedy in Arizona.

In advance of President Obama's appearance at Wednesday's memorial in Tucson, I asked the congresswoman about the president's opportunity to use this moment to talk about the lack of civility in our public discourse.

The full conversation airs tonight on PBS.

Would somebody please go through the Presient's speech before he gives it and delete the word "hope" in the 167 instances that it appears, please?
02:10 PM on 01/12/2011
Why? What do you have if you don't have "HOPE"? This is what the republicans want you to have, a feeling of "NO HOPE"!!! It's all part of the fear they are flooding the airways with today. No, don't remove the word "Hope" add more of it!!! Hope that this country will continue to move towards a more perfect union.

Chris Matthews used to have Tom Delay on as a regular guest and commentator--certainly not to Matthews credit. This woman put him in his place. It was a sight to behold.

This is a memoral service. Let it be about the victims. However, the State of the Union should address the infection of hate in the discourse of this country. But please let the memorial be about the victims. The families need words of comfort.

he infection of hate in the discourse of this country is what led to this incident so I don't think it would be inappropriate to address that issue.

Thanks so much for this commentary. Tavis Smiley looks for every opportunity possible to discredit President Obama. I agree that the State of the Union is the place to address his concern. He is so envious of the president and needs to get over his victory.

No, Tavis Smiley challenges the president to live up to his promise and potential as a progressive and as the first black president.

I find it ironic that the first black president can't seem to be seen too often around a crowd with more than 50% black people. He can't even hardly ever mention the black community.

Tavis and blacks who occasionally criticize Obama about this realize that he is probably being advised (by mostly whites, probably) to stay away from race and that this is not unusual for blacks in powerful positions in mostly white institutions.

However, just because the president is black does not mean that blacks have to accept or remain quiet about things that they disapprove of in the performance of his job...especially as it relates to the black community.

Isn't it president Obama who sometimes tells black people to challenge each other and hold each other accountable? Well, if it's good for other blacks, why shouldn't it be good enough for him to be held accountable...or is the president above all reproach?

On that note, the president always seems willing to address black issues when talking about the negative, but he rarely seems willing to participate or engage in positive discourse or fora involving black people. Just my observation.

Please don't impugn every black critic of Obama as being a "hater." My brother's keeper means that you want the best for your brother...brotha.

Congressman Shultz has shown great restraint in keeping her comments measured, considering that Gabrielle Giffords is a friend of hers. The right is showing incredible arrogance and hypocrisy, but that's par for the course with them.

hypocrisy, jealousy.. envy.. started when Barack, won 6 States, in Primaries. They knew, he was our next President.. No man has been verbally attacked, the way this man has...they want to avoid subject that it is, Candidates for high office, and Congress, on the Extreme Wrong.. ""Right, that makes this differant..candidates entice voters to vote for them, and what they say, is who they are.

She said it all, now, didn't she? Does it matter who says it now? This is about expanding ourselves, one and all. If Carl Rove says it now, does it matter? Yeah, talk is cheap. But more and more WILL walk the walk, slowly or quickly. Come on, you know we can do this. It took a long time for us to get here. It's going to take time to walk it back to "civility". I know we'll get there with tens, nay hundreds of millions around, not just America, but all over the world, helping us help ourselves. Don't laugh, unless you're a fool. I'm not joking because this whole matter is not a joking matter. We have to help ourselves help ourselves, one and all.

The Congresswoman is one of the most vicious people out there, why have her be the spokesperson for civility? Its like putting Michele Bachman out there.
02:12 AM on 01/12/2011
Could you provide factual evidence backing your judgment that Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz is "vicious"?
She's passionate, outspoken and quite straightforward, sure but she's a very decent and well-behaved politician, quite appreciated by her constituents.

Of course the 'public discourse' is out-of-control.

However look at how cartoonish the Wall Street/City of London bail outs were, the outrageous bonuses on the back of precious taxpayer money, the MASSIVE AUSTERITY CUTS to the states.

Come to find out that because of austerity cuts to mental health services in Tucson, this incident my demonstrate how something like this could slip through the cracks.

For all who were listening, the president addressed this very issue on May 2010 during a graduation ceremony. Very insightful and prophetic. Rachel played the speech on her show tonight. I don't need anyone to tell me what he needs to say.
