Sean Penn has been called the best actor of his generation, taking another step toward that distinction last night by winning his second Oscar for Best Actor.
Off screen he is of course well known as a passionate advocate on behalf of so many worthy causes. Recently, I sat down with the normally press-shy actor to talk about a number of subjects, including how he views his role as an advocate.
The full conversation airs tonight on PBS.

I, too, admire Sean Penn for his remarkable on-screen talent, as well as his smarts & big heart! He certainly deserved this second Oscar. Congrats Mr. Penn!
great actor, activist, whatever. all i know is if i was in trouble i would love to have sean penn in my corner.
but he really is a great actor...
I love this guy and have always loved him even before he was such an activist.
Here is a man with great talent ....millions of dollars...but still has the class to care for everyone. This is a man who has NOT let money overshadow the real meaning in life.
One day I hope he take the time to serve for public office. The nation would be better off.
SPICOLI FOR PRESIDENT !!!
OOPS! We just elected his twin.
Thank You Sean Penn for your bravery in playing the role of another brave man that would not be silenced and his memory lives on 30 years later. WE SHALL OVERCOME.
Harvey would have been very proud. I still find that the documentary produced in 1984 "The Life And Times Of Harvey Milk" is the best in accurately telling of his life.
The first time I arrived to San Francisco you would think that the city that this man fought so hard to have our voices heard and as the staging ground and a face for our civil rights would have dedicated more towards him and his memory right?
I was disappointed when my friend Dom took me to the Castro to where there was only a plaque at the entrance/exit of the Muni subway under the city.
Harvey deserved so much more than that. Hopefully this film will remind this selfish, self-serving, cowardly generation of why we must continue to fight on.
It's not about "ME ME ME" or "getting what I need".
It's about all of us.
Thanks Tavis ... you are still the best!
He has the hardware, so whatever he says! Hahahaha
So Sean Penn lives a great life because he lives it as if he is an actor playing the part of himself in real life. Cool.
God bless and protect Sean Penn, I have a great debt of gratitude to him.
I always liked Sean Penn and his political views. So down to earth. And yes, I like Chavez too for he
helped the poor people. I wished he ran for congress.
I like that line, "feel your own life while you're living it."
cool
