There is no way to put into words the love and respect that Tom Joyner and I have for each other, or the love affair that I've had with TJMS listeners for almost 12 years now.
Due to the overwhelming amount of phone calls and emails I have received from listeners and other media, I wanted to briefly clarify a few issues that I will address more fully in my regular TJMS commentary on Tuesday morning, April 15, at 8:20 a.m. ET.
I did not "quit" the Tom Joyner Morning Show effective immediately. In July I will celebrate my 12th anniversary with the show, and as I discussed with Tom, it is my intention to take on the issues of the day in my commentary twice every week with the same energy, passion and commitment until the end of June.
Contrary to what has been suggested, I have decided to clear some things off my plate so that I can devote my time and attention to some exciting and empowering projects that The Smiley Group, Inc. and other divisions of my company have underway this summer, this fall and beyond.
I look forward to continuing the dialogue on Tuesday and in the coming months.

Geez.
How many neocons do you have to give a platform to before they consider you a willing establishment supporter?
You never came out and said it, but the tone you took with Feith suggested you weren't swallowing his swill... and wanted others to know it.
The desire to suck up to the Clintons may be hard to fight considering the ramifications, so stay strong and be your own man as usual.
I am an Obama supporter who wishes you nothing but the best Mr. Smiley.
well said!!!!
As I listened to Mr. Smiley on TJMS on Thursday, I was reminded of a small child who feels 'offended' he wasn't picked for the team. "Okay, I'll show you"! In truth Mr. Smiley and Mr. Obama are both grandiose men of color who feel a certain 'entitlement' to say whatever they feel without rebuttal. Mr. Smiley's veiled attempts to use Cornel West disappointment of Mr. Obama not showing up in Memphis for a Dr. King commemoration to launch another volley was disingenuous. I hear many black pundits claim lovine of black people but the actions speak of hatred. That 'second message' that rides in on their false love claims is loud and clear. Many (not all) of us are the children of Willie Lynch; fighting one another, backbiting, rumors, slander because we want to be the 'big negro' with the top hat! I am please to see Rev's Sharpton and Jackson exercise discipline during this time by allowing Mr. Obama to blow his chance on his own and not due to something either of them say. Sadly though, 'alligator' mouth persons of color continue to claim to speak for us when they do not.
Any relationship to Jim Crow?
Tell us, MassIntell... Who speaks for you? Pat Buchanan?
As I'd tell any child when I was one who was being annoying 'go fly a kite'.
Well, to be quite honest, you speak for yourself.
Sharpton and Jesse are taking the stands they are taking because they've been in Barack's shoes and know what it takes to get there. I personally feel Obama was being a bit too cautious by not attending the MLK stuff. I understand the not wanting to be a distraction post the Rev Wright stuff, but to the extent that both Hillary and John McCain showed up, his absence was quite pronounced. Having said that, we will still give him a pass because we know where his heart is with respect to minority issues.
I'll like to commend Al & Jesse for taking the high road on these issues. Al in particular is a born hustler and recongnizes when the tide is shifting. He's decided to allign himself with the winning team.
Tavis, you were so busy pushing your fellow Wal-Mart buddy Hillary that you lost your fanbase. Too bad.
Michelle Obama made 300 grand last year working for WalMart's biggest supplier. That slipped right by you, eh?
They must of ball-gagged and tied her up in the basement. Because I've not heard a THING from that woman in a good 2 months. Maybe they figured out she's a big liability when she's running her mouth. Maybe that's the real reason Obama didn't go to the black state of the union. Considering his wife's views on America and Caucasians he might be viewed as something less than impartial in regards to AA.
Dustee. He didn't lose me. Tavis is right in his critique of Obama. Michelle Obama is as corporate as Hillary.
I still support Obama. The issue isn't Wal-Mart either.
CORRECTION.
Well, maybe not as corporate but she moves in a similar sphere of influence.
So....the report that crazed mind police Obama vigilantes of intolerance have driven your voice from the air was a lie?
New endeavors are a good thing. And don't let the Obamabots get you down. They are trashing you unnecessarily because they think you don't support their boy. Support who you think is best for America!!
You're calling a black man "boy" in 2008? Barack Obama is not a boy, AreYouFibbing.
And calling those of us who support Senator Obama for President "Obamabots"?
You're so full of hatred.
Relax. Not everything is racist.
Well, that's good to know. I was under the impression that since I was an Obama supporter, I was a "hater" and was forcing you off your show with horrible "hating" threats and taunts and insults. Glad to know I didn't do any of those things, because I hadn't thought I had... but for all I know I could have done them in some sort of a brainwashed, cult-induced tizzy.
Have you read any of HuffPost commentary section? It doesn't have to be you for us Obama supporters to go over the top.
Keep being a truth teller, Tavis, especially when we don't want to hear it.
Best of luck on your new ventures.
I love you Tavis - you are so fair to all.
Ummmmm, Okay . . . . .
You aren't quitting. Is Johnson holding some family members hostage?
Alright-----(should I have inferred Johnson is a terrorist?)
That was indeed uncalled for . . . . . I think.
Seriously!
Bob Johnson if that is who you are referring to had some interesting Obama things to say during this election cycle.
He and Tavis aren't in the same league. Tavis has class.
Great News Tavis - I was hoping the reports I was reading were incorrect. It will be wonderful to have you around still. Do know that you have the respect and admiration of many many people.
Peace...
