The Catholic War on Democracy

Posted: 02/10/2012 3:17 pm

At a Vatican meeting with Catholic bishops from the USA last month, the pope told them that they had a duty to apply pressure on Catholic politicians to get Catholic doctrine written into law.

Ratzinger said: "The Church has a critical role to play in countering cultural currents which, on the basis of an extreme individualism, seek to promote notions of freedom detached from moral truth."

He noted U.S. bishops' efforts "to maintain contacts with Catholics involved in political life and to help them understand their personal responsibility to offer public witness to their faith..."

That was especially important with regard to "the great moral issues of our time: respect for God's gift of life, the protection of human dignity and the promotion of authentic human rights," he said.

The bishops had to ensure that American Catholics had the courage "to counter a reductive secularism which would delegitimize the Church's participation in public debate about the issues which are determining the future of American society."

No sooner were they back home than the bishops saw an opportunity to put the pope's orders into effect. They launched an all-out attack on President Obama's new health insurance plan that would make it possible for women to gain contraception free of charge. Even in Catholic institutions.

The great cry went up: "Obama has launched a war on religion."

The battle cry was taken up by the right-wing press and was, of course, a gift to the Republican politicians battling it out for the presidential candidacy. Mitt Romney said: "Remarkably, under this president's administration, there is an assault on religion -- an assault on the conviction and religious beliefs of members of our society." Gingrich and Santorum -- both Catholics -- have similarly launched broadsides at the president.

In their usual overstated, hyperventilating way the bishops have presented Mr Obama as variously destroying religious freedom, breaching the constitution, attacking the Catholic Church and maybe even eating the babies he permits to be aborted.

The Catholic Church started its campaign at screeching pitch and is increasing the volume from there.

So, is there a war on religion? Or is religion waging a war on democracy?

After all, Obama was elected on the promise of health care reform. He didn't pull it out of the bag as a surprise. The American people wanted him to do it.

And polls are now showing that most American Catholics -- and everyone else except white evangelicals -- support Obama's plans to give women birth control.

So who are the Catholic bishops speaking for when they demand exemption from the law? Not their congregants, that's for sure.

These polls are inconvenient to the American right, religious and secular, so there will be an attempt to quickly bury them.

But the truth of this fracas is that the pope is trying to run American politics and bring it in line with his own teachings. And like all theocrats, it doesn't matter what the people want, what matters is what he says God wants.

I wonder if the catholic church would raise such a stink if President Obama said that health insurances would now cover colon screenings or prostrate screenings (preventative health) for men.

Okay, the pope told them WHAT???? Is this for real? If it's true, I am absolutely OUTRAGED! I have never had anything against the Catholic religion (or the pope, for that matter.) My in-laws are Italian Catholic and I've known some lovely, wonderful people who practice the Catholic faith in my time. It's not a faith that I could PERSONALLY ever believe in, but that doesn't mean I would disrespect someone else's right to believe it. But is it actually TRUE that the Pope is attempting to have religion written into our laws here in the U.S. - specifically the CATHOLIC religion? Obviously that will never happen... it violates our constitution and our people won't allow it.

I will research this to see if I can find other references to this "meeting" he had with these bishops to verify this. But I think we have an ENORMOUS problem if we have the Vatican literally attempting to subjugate the U.S. constitution. I mean a BIGGER problem than we ever had from the Taliban or any other force we've ever opposed as a nation.

It is true and consistent with the church's MO for the last 1500 years. Keep in mind that it is the system not the individual catholic believers that wishes to force their beliefs. Since they believe the pope to be infallable, then what he says cannot be questioned. Unfortunately most protestants forgot the corruption, torure, crusades, and false doctrines that they were protesting years ago and will now support a santorum because they think he will force morals into law. Many protestants will go along with the roman catholic church's belief that there is no wall of seperation between church and state. Remember that is a new concept that started with the us constitution because the early americans remembered the persecution they escaped in europe. The pope controlled kings by claiming their salvation was with the church. In 300 years, they are now openly bringing the usa back to the fold. Biden, pelosi, 5 of 9 supreme court justices, 2 of 4 gop candidates, more than any other denomination in the sanate and house. You can believe it is not coincidence. It should be treason for polititians to follow this policy since the pope is the head of a soveriegn state as well as a worldwide religion. They cannot serve a vatican master and an american nation.

That is the Catholic war on the American Constitution.

This new ACA healthcare compromise is an unconscionable, unconstitutional tax on non-Catholic businesses that establishes Catholicsm as the state religion.

Before this change, all businesses, all American businesses, were required to pay equally for their employees' healthcare coverage. No longer. Now there is one rate for Catholics, and another, higher, rate for non-Catholic businesses.

The cost of covering contraception per woman is between $26 - $41 per woman per year.
http://aspe.hhs.gov/health/reports/2012/contraceptives/ib.shtml

This is a zero sum game with no magic. If we all pay, then all should share in the benefits of the lower overall costs.

Now, however, that Catholic businesses do not pay for their own employees, non-Catholic businesses must, unfairly, pay for those Catholic business employees.

That is a federal government enforced, religion-based tax on non-Catholic businesses that makes their businesses more profits and more competitive.

A new inquisition where non-Catholics are forced by the government to pay Catholic costs.

Outrageous. Unconscionable. Unconstitutional religion-based preferences of one business over another.

This is clear evidence that the Catholics are a political organization. It's time to collect the proper tax rate on them as they can no longer be considered a religion.

That is ridiculous and you know it.

It's only ridiculous until YOU lose a liberty that YOU hold dear. The Catholics are not about the love or worship of any Godhead. They are about the love of money, the victimization of innocents, the denial of equality, and the pursuit of forced control upon every populace in their history. The history of this organization is riddled with this continuous truth. This speaks only of a political agenda and thus a political organization.

Christian Dominionists by far are the greater threat to our freedoms and intellectual growth that exists in the United States today.

Wouldn't that indicate the Catholic church is now nothing more than another lobbying group in this country? Take away their tax exemptions say I!

The church is just becoming another PAC. They deserve to forfeit their tax exempt status. But they occupy a privileged position in society so they can do anything they want and get away with it. The only hope is for Catholic women to get tired of these old fossils trying to control their bodies. If the women rebel, the church would not last six months.
06:53 PM on 02/10/2012
If 'they can get anything they want'. the mandate would not have been devised in the first place.

Pedrhaps Jesus is 'an old fossil' to you, but He is very much alive for most Catholics.

As the polls show, the title of this blog post is somewhat misleading. There only is a CHURCH (and mosque) war on democracy. And that war is part of a broader antagonism between theocrats and democrats that is not limited to the USA or to Christianity. So, for all practical purposes, the term "atheism" is better replaced by "secularism" or "anti-clericalism". We might need religious teachers, but we definitely don’t need religious leaders.

I am a Catholic and am embarassed by the Church. They demand there be no abortions and at the same time refuse to allow women to take steps to avoid unwanted pregnancy. It is, I'm convinced, run by a bunch of rich men - none of whom have been married or are fathers (the wouldn't tell us if they were), nor are any of them poor, but I've never heard one pro-life advocate offering to raise the child they demand be born. Still they dictate the way we should live our married lives as parents in this world. I'm ashamed of the Catholic Church and its political demands that the separation of church and state be abolished.
11:31 PM on 02/10/2012
Well said. Thank you. I was raised as a Catholic and held on to religion for as long as I could. I think that Catholic bishops don't really believe in the existence of a God. They put all of the God stuff out their for everyone else to believe, but put themselves, their careers, their power, their wealth, their own reputations above everything else, sacrificing abused children, women, gays, Jews and anyone else handy as a scape goat. If they really believed that an all knowing, all powerful judge was waiting to judge them upon their death, they would be scared, given all of the hateful, vicious, hypocritical things they say and do. Very very scared. When is the last time you saw a bishop or any cleric in sack cloth and ashes? When have you ever seen real and devastation from any bishop about the consequences of their actions in the entire child abuse scandal? And I am not talking about damage control sound bytes to make themselves look good. I have always had an idea of what a bishop should be like, and how he should tend his flock, especially the most grievously wounded. Bishops act more like corrupt CEOs than holy men.

It's clear you are not a Catholic at this time.

We should demand that treatments for prostate problems should be denied because they affect a man's ability to procreate and see how the Bishops react to that.
