Chick-fil-A Alienating Customers With Stance on Same-Sex Marriage

Posted: 07/30/2012 3:21 pm

By Austin Gaddis

I don't have to start this column by telling you about the delicious perfection of a Chick-fil-A chicken sandwich. You already know that. Divine inspiration is truly the only logical explanation for the revolutionary idea of marinating chicken in pickle juice.

I've always admired the chain's consistent expectation for employees to treat customers with the highest respect. There really is no other place today where you receive a smiling "my pleasure" after every single thank you. With Chick-fil-A, it's always been the little things that make the experience worthwhile.

But Dan Cathy, company president, sat down with the Baptist Press last week and was asked about the franchise's strong support of the "traditional family" -- the company donated over $2 million to anti-gay groups in 2010 -- to which Cathy shot back a quick, "guilty as charged."

He elaborated further by saying, "We are very much supportive of the family -- the Biblical definition of the family unit."

He made additional comments on marriage and family during a later radio interview, saying, "I think we are inviting God's judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at Him and say, 'We know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage,' and I pray God's mercy on our generation that has such a prideful, arrogant attitude to think that we have the audacity to define what marriage is about."

Cathy's comments quickly prompted an outpouring of both support and outrage, many calling his comments callous, insensitive and unnecessary.

Since the comments, The Jim Henson Company became the first major company to permanently sever ties with Chick-fil-A for the franchise's opposition to same-sex marriage. In addition, the company's CEO instructed that all money received by Chick-fil-A would be donated to GLAAD, a pro-gay rights group.

Many other groups have called for a boycott of the fast-food chain, while others, like Mike Huckabee, have declared a Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day to combat recent "vicious hate speech and intolerant bigotry" aimed at the company. It seems everyone has an opinion on the makers of the chicken sandwich.

Strangely enough, it seems Cathy's vision for Chick-fil-A's stark and very public opposition to same-sex marriage has only come along recently.

When Cathy was asked about his company's anti-gay stance late last year, he appropriately diffused the charge by saying, "We're not anti-anybody. Our mission is to create raving fans." It's apparent that in such a short time, Cathy has forgotten that mission.

Corporate advocacy is not a new concept. Many companies attempt to influence and support legislation that falls in line with company values and interests. And in some cases, the legislation that the companies support may not necessarily be reflective of the values held by a broad range of consumers.

But with a great deal of attention being placed on social issues this election year, many companies are taking a clear stance on diversity and acceptance in their corporate atmosphere. Google recently launched a new worldwide campaign to legalize and recognize same-sex marriage called "Legalize Love."

Google joins JC Penney, Kraft Foods and Starbucks for having all recently faced criticism and threats of boycotts from far-right groups for their support of equality and acceptance inside and outside the workplace.

But with numerous polls showing Americans becoming significantly more supportive of marriage equality, these boycott attempts and calls for a recant of support gain almost no traction and look increasingly foolish.

While I don't dispute that corporations, like individuals, certainly have a right to freely support any ideology or issue, it seems to be a bad business model to willingly alienate a large faction of consumers.

Chick-fil-A's job should be to make delicious chicken sandwiches, not serve as a surrogate for one of the nation's most divisive issues. In a day where it seems everything is politicized, I'd like to think that my Spicy Deluxe combo and lemonade could offer a shred of normalcy -- not a channel for intolerance.

Cathy's comments haven't stopped me from ever eating at Chick-fil-A again, but I have lost confidence and respect in an organization that claims to be based on following and emulating a loving and accepting God.

Chick-fil-A executives should display the same amount of respect for customers that they expect out of their employees, easily creating raving fans of all backgrounds.

Like it or hot its a changing world. From a purely business position this is the worst thing he could have done. They way things are going in 10 years same sex marriage will be legal everywhere (fingers crossed), but people will always remember Chick-Fil-A's stance.

Why isn't your point that taking a stance at all alienates a large faction of customers? From a purely business sense, it's roughly as bad to isolate all the bigots as it is to isolate all the tolerant. It seems like that's where your argument was headed, then you just sort of decide to make a different point altogether...

You missed the WHOLE POINT. Corporate America most certainly has the right to say what it wants. LGBT (and all other) citizens have the right to boycott. But a problem arises when GOVERNMENT joins the fray.

An opinion is one thing, but contributing millions to activist organizations that oppose basic human equality is another thing entirely....

Tolerance...what a great word that the LGBT loves to throw out. This man has a right to believe whatever he wants. He hasn't discriminated against you whiners, but you'd have everyone believe that you're the only ones who're tolerant, which couldn't be further from the truth. You only advocate tolerance if its FOR you. How about you guys SHOW some tolerance for once. You don't have to eat there, so don't.

I'm gay, and I agree. Boycott them, protest in front of their restaurants, shun those who patronize them - that's the American way.

These politicians that threaten to ban the business because of the beliefs of the owner are way out of line, and what they advocate is illegal.

Did you actually read the piece, Tamsyn? Or are you typing on your laptop while feeding your kid and watching back-to-back episodes of Lady Hoggers on A&E?
01:21 PM on 07/31/2012
Perhaps I should have iterated that I did read it, and thought it was fairly written. No need to go after me personally, unless it upsets you that I call out the "tolerance" crowd that are WHINING. I wasn't referring to you, I was talking about your "tolerant" readers who call everyone a bigot who has different viewpoints than theirs.

'Chick-fil-A's job should be to make delicious chicken sandwiches, not serve as a surrogate for one of the nation's most divisive issues."

Then shouldn't Google just be a search engine, and not try to 'legalize love'?
04:29 AM on 07/31/2012
The first time I ever went to a Chick-Fil-A and the employee responded with "my pleasure" I was like, "awww, how nice!". But immediately after that, everything they say is, "my pleasure" "my pleasure" "my pleasure" whether that would actually be a warranted response, or not. They are FORCED to say it, they're not saying it because they mean it. I do not like fake pleasantries, and I do not like Chick-Fil-A.

FYI - Inside Chick-fil-A's finances: the family-owned company brings in over $1B in revenue each year, $400M in profits, pays the Cathy Family $190 million in dividends annually, and PrivCo calculates the Cathy Family's 100% stake in Chick-fil-A Inc. is worth a whopping $4.5 BILLION:

I don't care what their politics are. I just want a chicken sandwich. If I'm supposed to give a damn what they do with the money I pay them for their chicken then I hold responsible everyone who gives money to panhandlers on the street, buys drugs from a dealer, or pays taxes to the government.

Why do people act like Chick-Fil-A is the only fast food restaurant that offers a chicken sandwich? If you live on the West Coast, Carl's Jr chicken is AMAZING! Wendy's has a pretty good chicken sandwich, as well as Arby's.

Hell I dunno. Frankly I love Jack in the Box's chicken sandwiches too. Chick-Fil-A's food is very different (and I think excellent) but there are certainly a lot of other good options out there.

Classic crude, irresponsible American retort. "If I want it, I don't care where it's come, or who suffered so I could stuff my face." The bloody history of fallout from precisely this sort of gobbling ignorance has painted the world red.

Right, okay. I could hold a mirror up to you and show you how your judgmental attitude is wrong but I'm just going to say this: You're a hypocrite if you pay for insurance of any sort, and especially if you purchase prescription drugs.

So go ahead and swing your judgment around and insult my "American" retort. I'll just rest easy over here and enjoy my American country with my American civil rights, and participate in my American process of law and government to work actual change instead of trying to boycott everyone that happens not to agree with me. That sort of activity comes from a childish petulance that has no place in my life.

Neither Chick-fil-a or Mr. Cathy lifted the business as a surrogate for the nation's most divisive issues, you and the rest of the press did that. His stand on gay marriage has not changed, nor did he say that he was anti-gay. He simply stated that, according to his beliefs, marriage is a Biblical rite between a man and a woman. How dare you, or anyone else, make more of it than that. Why is this not ok yet it's ok for large city mayors to announce that no new Chick-fil-a's will be built in their cities? Following their logic, they should also announce that no new mosques or no new gas stations be built in their cities. After all Islam and OPEC believe that homosexuals are to be killed - which to me is a lot worse than a spicy chicken sandwich and an order of waffle fries.
09:34 PM on 07/30/2012
He donated a large sum of money to anti-gay marriage causes. That large sum of money is a direct result of people who purchase Chick-fil-A products. It is every American's right to vote with their wallet and provide business to whatever establishments they see fit.

As far as Chicago and Boston, both mayors have backed down, rightly realizing the egregious first amendment violations they were promoting.

Finally...perhaps you should read some more of the bible before trying to say that marriage is a biblical rite between one man and one woman. Specifically, you should read

Exodus 21:10, 2 Samuel 5:13; 1 Chronicles 3:1-9, 14:3, 1 Kings 11:3, and 2 Chronicles 11:21.

You may discover that in fact the concept of marriage as we know it is quite modern and has absolutely no basis in biblical scripture.
10:41 AM on 08/01/2012
I just shared that with you to show that the Bible does not condone having more than one wife. It is just giving an account that certain figures did. So it doesn't prove that God changed his mind about his original design for his creation. Of course modern marriage looks different today. Everything looks different than it did back then. Marriage for some is for legal benefit or entered into with no serious commitment. Marriage means different things to different people but God does not change with the whims of people. Many people believe that the creator knows what's best for his creation and hold firm to that belief. It doesn't mean they are unloving because they believe God knows what's best for his creation.

Mr. Cathy has the right to his opinion no matter what I think. But donating 5 million dollars to anti-gay organizations that actively seek to deny equality to the LGBT community is another matter. There have been many people across the country who have spoken up in favor of equality. They have the right to free speech also no matter how much it irritates you.

According to public tax records, CFA donated $20 million just last year to its charitable foundation WinShape which funds anti-gay institutions and initiatives, among other things.

20 MILLION in one year!!!
