2013-04-18-1foodnetworkinthekitchen.jpgCooking has evolved from a necessary skill we learned in order to feed ourselves into a hobby, a competition, and a talent that is well respected throughout the country. No more is cooking limited to restaurants or family dinners; now, it's become something that's written about, voted on, photographed, and aired on national television. It's spread beyond the pages of a cookbook and into our hearts through magazines, television, and computers, and now we can even find cooking on our phones (Photo Credit: itunes.apple.com).

With smartphones and tablets everywhere these days, the expression "there's an app for that" has become a common part of our dialect. And as you may have guessed, there's an app for pretty much everything that has to do with cooking. App stores for iPhones, iPads, and Androids have no shortage of recipe collection apps, apps with helpful kitchen tools, recipe box apps, how-to apps, and more, and with so many options out there, it's hard to separate the wheat from the chaff.

There's no need to worry, though, because we've turned our cooking-obsessed attention to the situation and have hand-picked a list of apps that are worthy of space on your electronic device. Starting with a list of 30 from the most-sold collection of app vendors, we studied and scored each one based on their availability (iPhone and Android?), novelty, user experience, and most importantly: practicality. Most of these apps aren't free, so when you get past whether it works or if it looks nice, all you really need to know is whether it's worth your dime, and we think these are.

These apps aren't for everyone. There's going to be some that you may not find helpful, like the Green Kitchen app if you're a ravenous meat-eater or The Photo Cookbook if you're especially skilled. And hey, it may not make sense for you to download Weber's On the Grill if you don't own a grill, but the point is that these apps come from a large collection of ones just like them, and they're the best in their class. So whether you're looking to organize your collection of recipes, need more guidance in the kitchen, or just want something fun to play with, these apps should be on your radar.
