You may think the only thing you've absorbed from romantic comedies is that Matthew McConaughey has never worn a shirt, but if you probe the inner sanctums of your mind you'll probably find many life lessons you learned from these films. Here are our 14 favorite teachings from the world of romcoms. For more from The Frenemy, go here! - Alida Nugent

If you ever go to the hair salon, you will have hilariously mis-dyed hair and a flamboyant hair dresser who wears a black turtleneck. You will leave wearing a very comical hat or bandanna. Going to the hair salon is scary! Or maybe it’s just scary HOW FUNNY IT CAN BE.

Ginger - you find that man and let's clone him! I got sucked in by the words - "I really enjoyed Water for Chocolate." And I ended up marrying him!

Wait a minute - straight men will watch these movies if they think there will be sex following the credits.

Here's one simple thing that you will almost always learn from romantic comedies...they're not romantic, nor are they truly comedies! Save your money and wait for it to come out on cable.

"If somebody has lied to you for the duration of your three-week relationship (whether it be about their career, the fact that they are engaged or that getting to know you was a bet) it’s totally okay because you have fallen in love with them, duh."

It goes the other way as well. There will be a couple that has been together for 5 years and is engaged. The significant other finds out they kissed their best friend 7 years ago before they even knew them and calls off the marriage.

This reminds me of the 10 reasons not to read woman's magazines. The films are like the Cosmo of Hollywood. I'd much rather watch an adaptation of Jane Austen, though she sets an unattainably high bar for men. No man will ever be Mr. Darcy or Colonel Brandon.

I'm not a huge watcher of rom-coms, but I don't mind catch a few of them on DVD when I can.

What bugs me the most about them - and I've found this to be something of a 'thing' with rom-coms - is how they sanitize female sexuality. The female leads never ever - when the topic invariably comes up - admit to masturbating or even having sexual fantasies. Recall Meg Ryan in When Harry Met Sally relating to Billy Kristol's character her very lame, absurdly tame sexual fantasy. Or Katherine Hiegel in The Awful Truth becoming squeamish at even the thought of masturbating. There are many other examples.

These women appear to lead sexless, one-dimensional lives - which the men "save" them from. Its like they're not really allowed to be full, sexual beings. As such, they not very honest or realistic representations of *real* women and are, I think, rather sexist in that way.

In that sense, they only difference between these films and the more overly sexist Hollywood rom-coms of the 50s is a matter of degree.

That sexuality is explored more in romantic comedies from other countries like Spain, France and Italy.

Yes, foreign rom-coms seem to accomodate this better than American ones.

1) Almost any romantic comedy will be a rip off of a previously made Julia Roberts Rom Com that was really bad to begin with.

2) You Got Mail is the only smart film in all of the films listed above. Probably because its loosely based off Pride and Prejudice.

3) I can count on one hand the number of times I ever thought a woman was "funny" in a television series or film. Probably because women are mostly cast for their looks and not for the comedic ability. They keep making Katherine Heigl rom coms even though shes not funny. She's beautiful, but shes not funny. Sorry.

Who writes these movies? Probably men. Some guy writes a script where two people are being witty. The problem is, men aren't witty. There's no way we can keep up with women in real time. What do we do then?

There are 2 who don't fit the stereotype. Up in the Air and Forget Paris. Deal with realistic occurrences and sometimes love really sucks
12:51 AM on 10/12/2010
Jack Nicholson has done some that don't fit the stereotype. He probably looks for good female writers.

From The Break Up:

Never mess with the toon rangers.

From The Switch:

Never leave a sperm deposit cup in the hands of a guy thats looked at one more than once longingly.
