Curator Dirk Breiding came across a surprising Hebrew inscription on this fifteenth-century German crossbow. Intrigued by its translation, he began to investigate secret codes used at the time to learn more. "Art history is very much like detective work," he says, "and if you're lucky there's even a mystery to be solved."
