To all the New Yorkers and Ghostbusters fans around the world who have expressed surprise that The New York Public Library called upon Improv Everywhere to bring its cadre of secret agents in on our Don't Close the Books on Libraries campaign ... who you gonna call when you need help and attention?
NYPL is facing the harshest public funding cuts ever proposed, to the tune of $37 million for the new fiscal year. Clearly, aggressive measures were required, at the very time that our resources for messaging are so scarce. Luckily for us, social media is the great equalizer, allowing nonprofits to easily create content and enter into online collaborations with those who can galvanize immense viral fan bases to not only watch but to act. Hence our first foray into mobile giving with the New York Yankees, our welcoming of American icon Tillman the Skateboarding Dog to the landmark Stephen A. Schwarzman Building on 42nd Street, and now, even opening up our doors... to the undead.
Improv Everywhere aims to "cause scenes of joy in public places." We want people to remember that the Library is a place of joy, and community, and discovering the unexpected -- all the great positive things you see in the video.
