3 Veggie Burgers That Will Have Meat-Lovers Fooled

Posted: 07/01/11 04:17 PM ET

I was tending the grill at a big block-party barbecue when someone asked me to cook some veggie dogs for them. Sure, I said, and then looked on in horror as this person plunked two Barbie doll-colored sticks on the grill. Dear readers, aside from the grill marks the veggie dogs hardly changed color when they cooked. I felt like apologizing when I served them.

This got me wondering: do all fake-meat products suck? I've written off veggie dogs as a hopeless case, but I decided to survey the veggie burgers at my local grocery store to see if there are some palatable options.

Which veggie burgers made us reconsider our meat eating -- and which burgers just made us sad for vegetarians? We rated the most popular veggie burgers on a scale of 1 to 5.

There is no way a vegetarian product can come even close to approximating a real, juicy meat burger, so my standard of judgment isn't so much about how close the veggie burger comes to tasting like a real hamburger. It's more about how tasty the veggie patty is, period.

In fact, I think there's a lot of potential deliciousness in a veggie burger if it's loaded with vegetables and the right grains. As our next-door-neighbor (also out grilling last night) remarked, "If I'm having a veggie burger I'd kind of like there to be some veggies in there, you know?"

On a scale of 1-5 (5 being most delicious) here's how the burgers rated. None of the burgers contain GMO soy.

Best Vegetarian Burger

Gardenburger Black Bean Chipotle Veggie Burger: 4.5
With whole black beans and kernels of corn in these brown-rice-based patties we felt like we were eating real food. The chipotle adds a lot of flavor with just a bit of heat. Patties weren't terribly moist, but they had varied texture, which we liked.

Morningstar Farms Garden Veggie Patties: 4
This was a very moist burger loaded with grated carrots, minced green onions, and a fresh veggie flavor. FYI, this is not a vegan burger; it does have egg whites.

Portobello mushroom: 4
We threw this one into the mix -- simply brushed with olive oil and grilled. Toothsome, great flavor, juicy, and loaded with umami. My husband pointed out the mushroom's one drawback -- it has a more uniform (therefore less exciting) texture than the veggie burgers.

Passable Vegetarian Burgers (can survive on these if stranded on a dessert island)

Sunshine Burgers Garden Herb Veggie Burger: 3.5
These are loaded with real vegetables and have a pretty good flavor.

Ashera's Gourmet Vegan Burgers, Original: 3
Actually, my husband and I liked these almost as much as the top two, but our son hated them and brought the average score down quite a bit. These thick patties are loaded with quinoa, something people either love or hate.

Amy's California Veggie Burger: 2.5
I had higher hopes for this burger, but it was just okay.

I'll Totally Pass Thanks, Burgers

Boca Vegan Burger: 2
A vegetarian friend predicted that these would be our favorite, but alas Boca's charms were lost on us. There's just not much going on here, mostly soy protein and onion powder. For some strange reason our son really liked them, though.

Moophrey Vegan-Vegetarian Burgers: 2
Pretty much the same as the Boca burger.

What veggie burgers do you recommend?

Morningstar Farms products are made with GMO ingredients. Too bad because I like them but won't buy them anymore.

Agree: Misleading headline. However, being a vegetarian I physically can't eat meat substitute products that taste or have a meat-like texture. 1. Gardein = SICK. This product is rubbery and truly made for people that like the meat texture. I actually had to spit it out. Ended up feeding it to my dog, if that tells you anything. 2. Morning Star Hot Dogs and Corn Dogs are amazing. They took them off the market for a little while because they tried to go the "sausage" rout, but they are back. LOVE THEM. 3. Any veggie burger you get at a restaurant is going to taste better because it was most likely taking the place on the grill right where a real beef patty was! You have to ask for them to be cooked seperately, unfortunately. I've been sick far too many times because of this.

I can't believe no one mentioned the Trader Joe veggie burgers-- they're fantastic and very 'meat'-like. As for veggie dogs, I've not yet found a very delicious one from the store, but they're quite simple to make at home. Plenty of recipes are out there, I enjoy the veggie dog recipe from La Vita Vegan.

Misleading headline - but veggie burgers can be enjoyed on their own merits. My local farmer's market has a stand that makes delicious portobello mushroom burgers, and we've made some good ones at home with various bean/ground vegetable/nut mixtures. Particularly good was a white bean/walnut/blue cheese burger topped with onions. Much better than any of the store-bought kinds.

Amy's has many varieties of veggie burgers. Our local cafe does one of them on a big sesame bun, with chopped mesclun, red onion, celery, a spicy mayo and a rich chipotle sauce. It is DELICIOUS.
Must say; I did prepare an Amy's at home and rank it as you do; however someone got great taste from Amy's!
Haven't found any other that passes my taste test, but I do go to Water Lilly at least once a week to have one of theirs. It is huge. I cut it in fourths and it lasts all afternoon! YUM!

Gardein- Ultimate Beefless Burger. Seriously. The Best. Try this one and you'll have to make a change to the blog.

And if I were stranded on a "dessert" island, I'd be eating chocolate. Or did you mean "desert"?

I like Don Lee Farms (available at Costco). I prefer my veggie burgers to be made of veggies and taste like it, vs. being made of soy. Yes, they are processed and packaged, but at least the list of ingredients is something I recognize. Though I like to make my own sometimes too.

Vegetable 'burgers' don't need to be a substitute.

Many are far tastier than a bland hamburger.

Add a whole wheat bun, sprouts, avocado, etc.... Yum!

Gardein! Why aren't they on this list? Gardein is the best thing to happen to veggies in some time.

Maybe reality has a liberal bias.

Does Gardein make burgers? I know they make fake meat in various other shapes, but I don't think I've ever seen a Gardein burger.

And I take serious issue with your claim that Gardein is "the best thing to happen to veggies." Apart from the fact that veggies are pretty great all by themselves, Gardein is just nasty. I will never understand what so many people love about that weird, rubbery, stringy texture!

They do make a burger now. Ultimate Beefless Burger. They are THE BEST!!!

I dont think I have tried a veggie burger that is a great substitute, but I am disappointed that you think all veggie dogs are awful. Tofurky's beer brats are definitely on my shopping list every time. They never disappoint.

Why does the headline read that you can fool meat lovers when the article makes it clear that you cannot. Does HuffPo read the content before assigning a headline?

No. No. No. They missed the best one. Veggie Patch Garlic Portobello burgers! Yum!

I do like some the vegetarian burgers, but usually make my own from a black bean recipe. I wish I could find a decent vegetarian sausage. I've tried a few brands, and they're all basically an equivalent of pepper on cardboard.

If Trader Joe's is in your area, try their veggie sausage patties. I prefer them over Morningstar Farms.

Tofurky sweet Italian sausage made of sundried tomats, herbs and other good ingredients.
Was introduced to them by a meat eater!
