As most of you surely must know by now, Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor -- whose many votes for women's rights tipped the scales 5-4 -- announced her resignation today.
I, and so many others like me, tried to warn you Nader voters in 2000 that this day would come. We didn't know how it was going to come: after an exhausting tennis game by elderly Justice John Paul Stevens; during a press conference by an out-of-remission Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, or a resignation by a balance-tipping Justice.
My sister, a Floridian who voted for Nader in 2000, was one of the 537 voters who caused Gore to come up short in that state, and for Bush to win.
She believed in Nader's accusations that Bush and Gore were the same. She regrets it now. And you 2000 swing state Nader voters, ought to regret it too.
For now, Roe is safe, but that's saying that because you've just jumped out the window you are still alive because you haven't hit the pavement just yet.
And for sure, Nader voters, it's not all your fault. By captaining an act that caused Americans to be paralyzed with fear and blindly re-elect an anti-choice leader that promised them revenge while promoting the (cough) "culture of life," Mohammed Atta helped kill Roe as much as Nader voters did.
Yes, the swing-state Nader voters in 2000 set the stage for the election of an anti-choice leader who won't make the same mistake as his Dad, and nominate a closet liberal like Justice Souter.
Your reproductive freedom may rest in whatever arrows lie in the meager quiver of Senate Democrats, and, I must point out on the hope that no more pro-choice Justices leave the Court before the 2006 mid-term elections. Until then, the reproductive freedom of American women may well rest with a few "moderate Republican" U.S. Senators, and with the medical skills of Ruth Bader Ginsburg's oncologist.
So, Nader voter, be not proud. Due to your foolish action back in 2000 be assured that in those warrens, those pulpits, those pews, where abortion is seen as tantamount to murder, the grape juice and apple cider will be pouring tonight.
