China, Iran: World Leaders in Blocking the Internet

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

Herdict, an Internet censorship tracking service launched by Harvard's Berkman Center for Internet and Society, has started aggregating their user-reported Internet blockages.

Iran and China stand out in the reported number of blockages of Facebook, Flickr, Twitter and YouTube. Interestingly, Mexico has quite a few blockages as well.

Check out the site for more detailed data and be sure to report when you are unable to access a site in your country!

Here's an earlier posting I did about the site with the founder, Jonathan Zittrain.

It's a credit to the persistence and bravery of the Iranians that so much information has gotten out despite the antics of the (rightly) paranoid government. IRI used to be able to pose as an alternative but after June 2009 it lies exposed for the reactionary horror show it's really always been.
