The Death of Hong Kong Street Food

What's Your Reaction:

Dai Pai Dong from Tem Hansen on Vimeo.

Formerly a highlight of any visit to Hong Kong, the last street food vendors of Hong Kong are being shut down one by one. Known as "dai pai dong," the restaurant featured in this video, located along the escalator in Central Hong Kong, was shut down about three weeks ago. The video was shot by a team that included Tem Hansen.

Great video, but a clarification to the accompanying text: this dai pai dong isn't being shut down. It's currently closed as the government installs a new gas line under the street and will reopen after the work is completed.

The dai pai dongs in Central are being preserved because they are such big tourist attractions. The ones in Sham Shui Po are more threatened because the local district council has objected to any efforts to keep them around.
