We've reached a crude milestone today in the history of the Bush administration.

Oil prices have skyrocketed $100 per barrel since Bush took office.

Oil traded at $32.19 a barrel on the first business day after George W. Bush's inauguration in January 2001.

Today, oil is trading at $132 a barrel.

The high price of gasoline must be put in its proper context. That context is that 40 years of mostly Republian, 'laissez faire" economic policies have had a very bad effect. Since Bush took office, median income has been stagnant. CEO's make hundreds of times more money than rank and file employees. Millions of people are just barely getting by. A single auto accident (thanks to, say, a pothole that didn't get repaired because the GOP was more interested in shoveling money down the Iraq sinkhole) could ruin them. Similarly for a serious illness. Or losing a job. Or becoming a victim of a crime. Or being falsely accused of committing one. So having gasoline prices approach four dollars a gallon is the last straw, but it's important to remember that if people hadn't been ripped off by GOP policies in the past, the price might not hurt so much. If people were getting paid as much as they should have been, gasoline would be more affordable. Democrats ought to be pointing this out. "Fan the flames of discontent / Times by Three of Fates be bent" should be a rune to go by.

George Bush is from Texas, and has friends (campaign contributers) in the oil industry. Dick Cheney is from Wyoming, where he lobbied for the oil and coal business. Cheney was CEO of Halliburton which sells equipment to the oil business. While they've been in power the price of crude oil has quadrupled. Follow the money.
