Rick Caruso: From the Grove to LA City Hall?

What's Your Reaction:

Mega-mall developer Rick Caruso is backing Democrat Jerry Brown for governor out of conviction because he thinks he's a problem solver, but it is an endorsement that also positions Caruso as a candidate for mayor of Los Angeles.

In an interview with the Huffington Post this week, Caruso disclosed that he is seriously thinking of running for mayor, even though Antonio Villaraigosa has three years left on his term. (Like presidential elections, campaigns for the city's top post start early.)

"I know if I'm going to run, I'll need to make a decision this year," he said.

As a prominent Republican in an overwhelmingly Democratic city, Caruso faces a disadvantage. Richard Riordan, the last Republican elected mayor of LA, compensated for his party registration by having Democratic strategist Bill Wardlaw -- a close advisor to the Clintons -- as consigliere.

Being known as a friend of Jerry Brown could do the same for Caruso.

The developer of the Grove and the American shopping centers has another big advantage: He could probably finance his campaign out of the spare change dish on his dressing table.

That could be enough to scare off lots of competition.

"When you compare Rick Caruso with the other rumored potential candidates for Mayor I think he has a good chance to get into a run-off election," said Democratic political strategist Kerman Maddox. "I suspect he would run well in the vote-rich San Fernando Valley and in a crowded field of candidates the threshold of votes needed to get into a run-off is smaller, which works to his advantage as he would be the most visible Republican candidate in the election."

This is not the first time Caruso has eyed the big office at City Hall. He considered running against Antonio Villaraigosa last time around because he believes the mayor has done "a disappointing" job of managing the city.

"I think even Antonio feels that way about himself," Caruso told the Huffington Post. (He's obviously hasn't spent enough time with the mayor, for whom self-criticism not a regular exercise.)

Caruso has been a longtime player in city politics, and most recently served as president of the police commission where he was an instrumental supporter of Chief William Bratton. (Billy, as Caruso affectionately calls him.)

Like Riordan, Caruso -- a Catholic -- probably will have to establish his credentials as a Republican who is pro-choice and pro-gay rights, including marriage equality.

Like his pal Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, he is an instinctual centrist, and that could serve him well in a race likely to focus on economic issues and job creation -- the same issues that attracted him to Brown.

It takes sharp elbows to run for Mayor of Los Angeles, but then you can't be a pushover and believe you can improve on the Farmer's Market.

Eric Garcetti, Jan Perry, Denny Zane.....these are the names that I expect to see running for mayor in 2012. What Garcetti has done for the revitalization of Hollywood, Perry's continued push for a more livelier downtown with affordable housing and living wages at "malls" that have a real impact to their surroundings like LA Live and what Zane has done to promote transit in this city by spearheading Measure R.......these people have REAL track records. REAL results and clearly understand the connection between transit, density and REAL urbanism. Please never some Repub who lives in the outer boroughs who builds fake urban squares that does nothing for the immediate surrounding area and always, yes always with no connection to rail transit.

The people you mention are corrupt city hacks whose support comes from unions and racial politicians. They cannot connect the dots between where govt, gets money and how...and where it should be spent. They know how to give groups hand outs, make others pay for it, and drive a city that was on the move in the 80's to near third world status now.....sorry, we need leadership in this city, and there is not one person holding public office today fit to lead. Caruso is a businesman who should stay that way....we need a reform of our system. We need a strong mayor, with a larger city council that represents all of us and not the vocal....these people in government can't even control the grocery carts that litter every street and lot....

The problem I have with Caruso is that for every large phony schtick village he creates to get people to buy crap, he is putting small family or entrenpenuers out of business and we are left with blighted areas like North Hollywood, or Fairfax....honestly, did Glendale really need another mall? And, since LA has such bad transit, why does he charge so much for parking? A movie and dinner at the Grove for two will set you back $100.....not my idea of good social leadership. He gives money to Brown....what will he get in return? And, is Jerry Brown the bwst California can dig up for its future governor?

You should go over to the Market side. Most of the places are still family owned and have been there for decades. You could also take advantage of the free entertainment. You can still eat dinner for less than $10 bucks and watch the people show. It's better than its been for years.

On the other hand, they were there long before his fake Music Man set....and the price to park was much, much much less.....and Fairfax was more lively....not to mention what he has done in Glendale....he built a fake city mall next to a huge mall in an area that is already choking itself with cafes cannibalizing each other.....yet, he ignores places like North Hollywood where a fake city environment would be an asset......he is no hero....not a bad man....but hardly the savior of LA....he thinks he will be mayor....not likely....
