While I'm still digesting the details of President Obama's executive actions on immigration, one thing is abundantly clear: The President got sick of waiting for others to act. Now let's see what his changes can accomplish.

If the deaths of Trayvon Martin and Oscar Grant, the real-life protagonist of the new film Fruitvale Station, were isolated incidents, we could complain and then feel better. We could protest, and then move on. We could be angry, but with the hope that the travesties would not be repeated.

When people say it's not yet time to fix Proposition 13, it make me think now is the time.

People used to say it was the third rail of California politics, that hazardous line that followed us everywhere and was political suicide to touch.

Let's Make Pedestrians and Cyclists Safer

Two or three times a month in California, a motorist kills a pedestrian or cyclist because of distracted driving.

It's no surprise that cyclists and pedestrians are far more vulnerable than people in a car. That's why they make up a higher percentage of collision deaths than would be suggested...

On Gideon's Anniversary: Legal Rights for the Homeless

We just passed the 50th anniversary of a landmark Supreme Court ruling about legal representation for the poor but few of the people who wrote to celebrate Gideon v. Wainwright mentioned the poorest of the poor: people who are homeless.

As much as anyone, homeless people need access to lawyers....
