I am the author/co-author of nine books: with Bob Drury of “Halsey’s Typhoon: The True Story of a Fighting Admiral, an Epic Storm, and an Untold Rescue,” published in January 2007 by the Atlantic Monthly Press and a New York Times best-seller; author of “Dark Noon: The Final Voyage of the Fishing Boat Pelican,” published in September 2005 by McGraw-Hill; author of “Sir Walter: Walter Hagen and the Invention of Professional Golf,” published in February 2005 by Simon and Schuster; with Bob Bubka of “The Ryder Cup: Golf’s Greatest Event” (Crown, 1999; Three Rivers Press, 2000); with Drs. Darlene Powell-Hopson and Derek Hopson of “Raising the Rainbow Generation” (Fireside, 1993), “Juba This and Juba That” (Fireside, 1996), and “The Power of Soul” (William Morrow, 1997; Quill, 1998); with Bridget LeRoy of “We’re Not Normal” (Indy Books), 1997; and with Dr. Martin Obler of “Fatal Analysis” (New Horizon Press, 1997; Dell, 1998). A book in progress is “’We Will Hold’: Fox Company and the Ridgerunners of Toktong Pass,” with Bob Drury, to be published in October 2008 by the Atlantic Monthly Press.

Articles that I have written on topics that include arts and entertainment have appeared in regional and national magazines, among them Avenue, Best Life, Child, Cosmopolitan, Distinction, Family Circle, Golf, Golf Journal, Good Housekeeping, Ladies’ Home Journal, Parents and Children, McCall’s, Men’s Journal, The Met Golfer, Nicklaus, Parade, Reader’s Digest, Sesame Street Parents, and Woman’s Day.

I was a contributing reporter to several sections of The New York Times 1984-97. I returned to reporting for The Times in 2003 through 2005, and I have recently become a contributor to the op-ed desk. My op-ed column “Farther East” appears every week in The Southampton Press and The East Hampton Press, which also publish profiles and other features in the Arts section. My “Links Life” golf column appears every two weeks on the internet and has over 10,000 subscribers. I am associate editor of The Medical Herald and The Spiritual Herald, two national monthly publications with a combined circulation of 100,000.
