In a speech today, President George W. Bush announced that if the Congress passes the proposed law on.....
Wait. There isn't anything good left for him to be against. The popcorn fumes law was the only thing left, and he's against it.
Health care for the poor, adequate armor for our troops, health care for our troops, peace, love and understanding have also been vetoed or will be.
I was going to write a satirical piece naming some other good thing that Bush is against, to show how absurd his stance is on popcorn fumes. I can't.
POPCORN FUMES for chissakes.
I can't even think of anything BAD that he's against either. War, torture, destroying the Constitution, racism, spying on Americans, giving away our money to his friends.....see what I mean.
The Bush administration cannot be satirized. It is parody proof.
When reality is ahead of satire, there's nothing you can do.
So let us quickly turn our gaze to the south. Is the rest of the country is just now discovering that the Republicans are a bunch of racists, homophobes, Southern bigots and all-around haters?
It takes time for these things to sink in. Like 35 years or so. From Nixon's "Southern Strategy" (get the haters on board), to Reagan thru Lee Atwater and all the others. And I mean all.
The history of the Republican Party is simple: appeal to the worst in people. Stoke their fears. Get them all bent out of shape about foreigners. In other words, find the stupid people and exploit them. Worked in the workplace, why not in elections?
So permit us to laugh in their fat faces now that they are isolated in the Southern regions where the Klan still lives, where a noose is a joke and the seething hatred behind the apple pie and Christian hymns is endemic.
The rest of the country has abandoned the south and what they stand for. Let them have their cruelty. All that the rest of us can do is continue to pass laws and use the muscle of the Federal Government to try to keep them in line...when there's a new president.
Of course there are similar attitudes in other parts of the country, but nowhere else is it systemic. I invited a black friend of mine to accompany me to Jazzfest in New Orleans. He would not. New Orleans, the most European city in America. That should tell you everything you need to know.
We can say to the Republicans the words a singer once wrote, "Go find yourself another country to be part of."
