Tom Gerdy is a building contractor by trade. Since 1981, he has been running a small construction company in Lynchburg, Virginia. His true passion, however, has been directed at leading a variety of community efforts to help people in need help themselves.

Tom was born in Butler, Pennsylvania, and lived in Little Falls, New Jersey until he left to attend college in Virginia. He attended Virginia Tech on a football scholarship and graduated from Montclair State College with a bachelor’s in marketing and management. He is married to Jane Patrisso Gerdy and is the proud father of four children and grandfather of two. Outside his construction business and other community activities, Tom devotes a great deal of time to the Habitat Road Trip Crazies, a group he founded that travels the east coast assisting small communtities with Habitat for Humanity builds.

Tom didn't do much writing until he started penning articles for the Huffington Post in 2006. His writings reflect his ongoing drive to encourage people to reach out and do their part to make the world a better place. Tom himself has been recognized many times for his humanitarianism, including Habitat for Humanity National Volunteer of the Year, Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow Award, National Exchange Club Book of Golden Deeds Award, National Conference for Community and Justice Humanitarian Award, the City of Lynchburg Mayor’s Award of Excellence, and Presbyterian Home Friend of Children Award. His community service includes past board member for the Virginia School of the Arts, past president of the Builders and Associates of Central Virginia, founder and president of Stop Child Abuse Today, and Police Foundation board member.
