Tom Rose covered the 1988 whale rescue depicted in the film as a reporter and producer for Japanese TV.

Following the events, he spent the next several months in Alaska interviewing every stakeholder involved in both the rescue and the media coverage of the whales – the oil company executives, environmental activists, Inupiat people, small business people, international media and the U.S military.

The events inspired his critically acclaimed novel, Freeing the Whales which inspired Big Miracle.
