Say the word rum, and the image that will pop into most people's heads -- well, the ones who don't instantly conjure up a pirate going "arrrrgghhh" -- is a mojito, mai tai, or some similar sweet, summery cocktail. Rum isn't something you drink. It's something you put into a drink. You know, Bacardi and Diet Coke. Captain Morgan and, um, whatever those guys are swilling it with while they're cavorting in those frat-boyish commercials.

Rum doesn't always get a fair shake nowadays. And that's a shame, because at its best, it's a sophisticated spirit that's as complex and delicious as the whiskeys and cognacs beloved by so many spirits snobs. Labor Day may be the time to put away those umbrella-laden tiki drinks (although, hell, a Zombie is great year 'round), but autumn is the perfect season to break out the snifters and drink some dark sipping rums.

Just in case you don't know, rum is made from fermenting the juice of sugar cane or its derivatives, usually molasses. Once it's distilled, it's aged in wooden barrels -- both new barrels and used ones that have contained everything from sherry to bourbon -- which affects the color and flavor of the finished product. Clear or light rums are aged for about a year, and then are filtered to get rid of any color; they're generally used as mixers. The rums discussed here, however, are aged much longer, up to 40 years in some cases. Their colors range across the spectrum from honeyed gold to deep amber to almost black in certain cases, and they can taste vastly different as well.

What follows is a list, with tasting notes, of more than a dozen rums that don't need blenders or straws or fruit juices or grenadine or any of the things you may normally associate with rum. I'm sure they'd all make a nifty mai tai, but doing that would be like slathering ketchup on a porterhouse steak. No, all you need to enjoy these sophisticated spirits is a glass and perhaps an ice cube or two. The list is by no means complete (feel free to add your favorite by clicking the 'Add a Slide' button), but you should be able to find at least one here to enjoy regardless of your taste in rum or the size of your wallet.

I know, I know, I didn't include your favorite rum. I haven't had a real rum until I've tried (insert name of rum I didn't mention here). That's why I want your feedback. Don't be shy -- chime in below or click the 'Add a Slide' button above!

I'm surprised that El Dorado 15-year rum, Angostura Single Barrel Reserve and Angostura 1824 haven't made the list.

When we vacationed in Puerto Rico, we would get Don Q Gran Anejo. It was my favorite sipping rum. About 10 years ago, it cost about $33 a bottle. I have not visited Puerto Rico since then and do not know how much the price has risen since then. I have not found it in Illinois, though.

Flor de Cana from Nicaragua is excellent in all price categories and years of aging. In Costa Rica you can buy an 18 year old Flor de Cana that is superb.

Disappointed to see that 10 Cane didn't make the list. I highly enjoy sipping it rather than "wasting" it by mixing it into a drink.

I'll get ripped for this and I am not a rum enthusiast by any means but out of the main stream and less expensive rums, I am a fan of Captain Morgan Black.

Oh yeah. Zaya rum. Takes us a while to work through a bottle, but what a wonderful, versatile rum it is.

Thats the one i was going to try. And the Atlantico

You will be a very happy person indeed. I thank the author for this list. Zaya is primarily a sipping rum, so...you know, I think this calls for a Bananas Foster taste test comparison tonight. Or perhaps a baba au rhum.

Do you like port? If so, may I recommend Brutocao zinfandel port, particularly with a smooth dark chocolate. I don't know if BevMo carries it, but you can order it online, about $22.

Sheesh, I sound like I drink a lot, but actually not so much. We just have a few bottles of stuff we really like. The scotch is the real heart breaker; there really isn't anything we've found in the lower price ranges that's as good as the expensive stuff, unlike wines. I'll definitely be trying some of the rums on this list though. Do you have a current favorite?

I was just introduced to Ron Abuelo anejo (from Panama) a few weeks ago...nice to see it on the list here!

Am glad that a product from my homeland is receiving such a "warm" welcome here in the states.

I like do shooters of 1part rum,1 part vodka, and 1 part Budweiser. Then I'll follow it down with a shot 110 proof white lightning.

The Havana Club rums are quite tasty. The Anejo Especial goes for about $35 a bottle here in Ukraine.

Pampero Aniversario is the smoothest rum IMHO. Probably the best product that Venezuela still produces
01:22 PM on 11/10/2010
Santa Teresa Solera 1796, Pampero Aniversario is great but Santa Teresa is much smoother.

I'm a little bummed than not one Venezuelan rum didn't make it on this list, especially since they are usually regarded as some of the best in the world.
