"OBAMA-WEBB SWEEP TO VICTORY, " reads the headline Wednesday, November 5th, 2008 in The New York Times.
I've seen the future and thought I'd come back and share the good news. Everyone expected a tough, close race against McCain when Obama elbowed Hillary out of the top spot. For weeks there was furious speculation as to whom he would chose as his VP but when he settled on Senator Jim Webb, former Marine, former Secretary of the Navy under Ronald Reagan, dad of a young man recently returned from Iraq and from the swing-state of Virginia, all the pieces fell into place for a rout. The Webb choice defanged the McCain advantage on militaristic experience and like Obama the one-term Senator from Virginia represented a fresh face that the electorate craved. The Democrats coasted to victory with the simple slogan: "Bring 'em Home! Obama-Webb '08."
The McCain-Kay Bailey Hutchison ticket tried to counter with their own slogan, "A HUNDRED YEARS OF MORE WAR!" but it never really caught on.

Edwards will be attorney general
Obama Zinni 2008 is perfect!! Zinni will bring a great miltary background to the ticket
Obama/Webb has been my favorite choice until Webb voted two days ago to give Telecoms immunity and to deny me my constitutional right against warrantless wiretapping and probably email tapping.
I don't know enough about Sebelius, but will investigate. I was underwhelmed beyond words with her Democratic response after the State of the Union.
After yesterdays vote to abandon our Constitution, A message must be sent to all the Blue Dog Democrats. If you are up for re-election I will not vote for you. This is the same message we must give to the repukes!
We must follow through, just like the people that made Edwards the nominee over their current Democratic Blue dog Rep.
Funny! why would Obama need Webb if he is such a anti-war guy who is attracting hordes of Republicans and Moderates to his side. what would Webb give him that he does not already have? Life experiences? Is that what he is lacking? Oh... but he has so much "HOPE" that compensates for any other deficiency.
I go with Obama/Oprah becasue they both start with 'O' and that is just a cool thing and we may finally see picture of another 'O' on the cover of 'O' Magazine.
Webb isn't a good fit with Obama. I suspect that comparing their senate voting records would indicate points of conflict that I don't think make for a mutual understanding of things. Plus Webb is too close to the militay industrial complex for comfort. That proximity creates a conflict of interest that we can do without and that I am sure would introduce some bias within the office of the VP.
I agree an Obama -Webb ticket just doesn't look right-gut feeling.
I think He opposed the war. Webb will likely be at the top of Obama's or Hillary's VP list.
I like the idea, but I'm a bit more in love with the idea of an Obama / Wesley Clark ticket. Clark is more tempered, and fills in more for Obama's percieved weaknesses, foreign policy and national defense. If the opposition starts to rally around Obama's inexperience, I think there could a wiser choice for a running mate than another fresh face.
I prefer Clark, too, Pmorain, but I'll take Webb. And I won't even feel like I'm "settling."
Why waste Gen. Clarks experience. He'd serve much better as Sec. Defense.
Another grand idea!
I supported Wes Clark in the 2004 election cycle. He has endorsed Hillary. But it would demonstrate that Obama is a different kind of candidate than Hillary who I know is taking names of everyone who opposed them or said any unfavorable thing about them.
In the days after Webb's response to the State of the Union last year, I posted a comment on the NYT site predicting that an Obama-Webb ticket would be really tough to beat. It would also be the most literate administration in living memory.
Obama/Webb. Wow! did I like that ticket. Letting the bushies and the telecoms walk on the 4th amendment won't do however. Sadder than McCain's vote on torture. I already couldn't stand Scrotum Hugger McCain.
Sorry, I will not vote Democratic if a woman is not on the ticket.
Call me whatever you want. Women make up 53 % of the electorate, and most of the Democratic party.
It's time we're included.
Call me when a female candidate who isn't Hillary Clinton runs for president. For every person who opposes Clinton's candidacy on the basis of her being a women, there's many more who oppose her because she's, well, Hillary Clinton.
I'm sure that Obama will have numerous well-qualified women in his cabinet, and I'm sure that Hillary will make a terrific Senate Majority Leader. That's where she can contribute the most to the new progressive era that's about to begin in America.
In an Obama administration, I doubt Hillary will take any job.
Why would Hillary want the VP when she would be much better off asking for the first opening on the Supreme Court? She should back out of the race after Ohio. If she was smart, that is the deal she should make with Obama. Good for the party and the court.
And the court is a lifetime appointment!
WONDERFUL THOUGHT...i like the sound of that or either vice versa since obama is a constitutional lawyer... either way would be a democratic plus
Grand idea!
Thank You.
I agree.
I can certainly understand wanting to be included, Apcalc. But a vote based on gender or race, whether for or against, is bias, plain and simple. As a woman, I surely wouldn't vote for McCain just because he chose Kay Bailey Hutchinson as his running mate. Would you?
Hey Trey...we'll be talking about this more I'm sure, but right now, I believe Barack Obama will pick Gov. Kathleen Sebelius as his running mate. Sebelius endorsed Obama last month.
There is not downside to picking her:
- she's a RED STATE Democrat who is popular with Democrats, Independents and Republicans in her state. She has created the "working majaority" in her state that Obama is doing nationwide. She's more conservative than Obama on some issues, which will play well in RED STATE America.
- Having her would ensure that Obama wins Kansas (his mom's birth state), and three states touching it: Colorado (a PURPLE state at best), and, Missouri and Iowa (which are quasi-Red States. And like that, four states would go blue, meaning Obama would not be in the must win position Kerry was in in 2004. Kerry won no RED States.
And did you see Sebelius' during The State of the Union last month? She did the Democratic Response. It was brilliant and "Obamian" in its substance: creating a working majority of demecrats, independents, and dis-illusioned Republicans.
Mark my words: Sebelius' name will be discussed regularly over the next month.
Research her here:
Her website: http://www.governor.ks.gov/
Her issues: http://www.ontheissues.org/Kathleen_Sebelius.htm
Analysis of her Democratic Response to Bush's State of the Union Speech: http://www.kansascity.com/105/story/465158.html
Mark my words: Kathleen Sebelius, who has both Democrats and Republicans in her family, is the best bet for Obama, as he seeks to win even more support from RED STATE America. Sebelius would easily provide the RED STATE legitimacy Obama is looking for if she were his Vice-President.
She will be the Vice-President under Obama. Mark my words.
2nd. Sebelius would be perfect!
She's a 1000000x better woman politician than Hillary!
A Governor or military person would be fine. BUT NO TICKET WITH TWO SENATORS on it any more. This is a constant play by the Dems and it is a sure loser.
The Rethugs figured it out long ago that the less "voting records" you give the other side to pick on, the better. I hope we learn and follow the Rethug play book on this one. Anything but a senator to be paired with Obama is a winner of a ticket to me!!
I TOTALLY AGREE.
Funny- the McCain-Hutchison ticket-- we could have hollywood make a revival of "Cocoon"-- as for Obama-Webb-- what about Obama-Bobby Kennedy Jr.-- even if he didn't support him at first? or an Obama-Caroline Kennedy ticket?
I always thought a military man would take the VP spot-- at first I thought Clark. And Webb is as good a public speaker as Obama. But let's see how this plays out, Trey.

A lot of people are floating Webb as a running mate for Obama. This is just short sighted, non-strategic thinking. If Webb abandons his Senate seat, just which party do you think is likely to fill it? Democrats need every Senate seat they have, plus some.
Bill Richardson or Wes Clark are much better choices for that reason alone.
Bill Richardson will go over well with Hispanic voters who might be tempted to vote for McCain given his stand on immigration. He also has more foreign policy and actual governing experience than any of the candidates.
Wes Clark, aside from being charismatic and tough as nails, also has great foreign policy as well as military credentials. Just let McCain try to swift-boat a general, he'll wind up with egg all over his face.
If Obama choose Webb I honestly might elect not to vote for for a president and let the chips fall where they may. Webb's not qualified that's all there is to that and there are dozens of people who are.
Neither is Obama qualified, commander and chief of the US military is the President's main job. I guess he feels he doesn't know anything about the military and Webb does, if this rumor is true, that's probably why.
Webb used to have quite a set on him, but he's cut them off and offered them to the neo-cons on a silver platter.
Bon appetit.
