The Art of Moving Books

Posted: Updated:

You may not have seen a bookmobile in a decade or more, and if you're young, you may have never seen one, so I'd like to take this opportunity to remind you that bookmobiles are cool.

We may not be doing it for the cool factor, but The Nobelity Project is partnering with Sandcastle Library on Roatan Island, Honduras to build a bookmobile that will carry a world of learning to 14 fishing village schools and 3,500 students. Because we want the bookmobile to look cool, we're inviting artists and deisgners of all ages are invited to submit their designs to The Art of Moving Books Design Competition.

There are three award categories. The Bookmobile Exterior Design Award is for a fun and fabulous paint job to reflect island culture, identify the bookmobile and create excitement in the kids of Roatan. The selected artist for the Exterior Design Award will join our team on a trip to Roatan, Honduras on May 11-15, 2013 to paint the bookmobile (working with a noted Roatan artist). The Nobelity Project provides airfare from the US, accommodations at the beautiful Blue Bahia Resort and a cash stipend for meals. The winning artist must be 21 years of age or older to make the trip. Passport required. Did I mention that Roatan is one of the most beautiful places on earth?

The second category is The Art of Moving Books Innovative Design Award, given for the most innovative design for moving books to under-served communities. Imagination is the only limit in this category. Design submissions might include a pedaled, paddled or solar-powered vehicle. The Art of Moving Books Award includes an honorarium of $250.

And there's a Young Artists Award for students 18 and under to submit paintings, pictures and poems about the "Art of Moving Books." Selected submissions will be included in a book that rides on the bookmobile. And many of the entries will be included in The Art of Moving Books Exhibit May 9-10, 2013 at Wardenclyffe Gallery in Austin, TX. Sales of the submissions will help fund the bookmobile project.
