Every year I do an artist statement. This is 2009.
Where I can see the sky meet the ground is where I like to go. No thoughts, no words, and no other place to be, only my heartbeat and breath. From this place inspiration is natural and abundant. I go for my self. Creating paintings that result from my adventures feels like an act of service for being blessed with eyes that see and a heart that feels.
Influences are varied. J.W. Turner rocks my world as a landscape painter. I like abstract pop artists like Pollock, Morris, Rothko, Max and Warhol. Three years of training as an automotive paint rep gave me a unique perspective on creating color. Three years as an imaging bureau rep exposed me to top photographers. Three years at a fine art digital print making bureau made me a Photoshop guru of sorts. I bring these influences and others together on every Untouched Beauty painting.
I stand while I paint. Music and movement are my vehicles. I drive the process with rock n roll abandon and a deep desire for something honest. When its really good, its like riding a wave of color and emotion. The finished painting is evidence of a performance that has taken place.
Writing about Henry Thoreau, Robert D. Richardson Jr. said:
Thoreau is probably the greatest spokesman of the last 200 years for the view that we must turn not to the state, not to a God, and not to a society, but to nature for our morality.
