Why John Edwards Endorsed Obama Today

(part 2)
Me, I shrug when looking at who wins the election. The problems are such that there would not have been that much difference between Clinton and McCain. The war, the currency problem, the housing crash (which is only about 15% done so far). I don't know if Obama can do anything, but only a resounding plurality in both houses and the presidency is going to do anything. Without the public coming out in mass asking for change, we are not going to push through the sorts of painful changes needed just to survive as a nation. McCain would no doubt be worse, but now that Clinton has given the nod to war with Iran twice, well, that was the biggest disaster I saw with a McCain presidency.
At some point, we need to realize we are talking about the survival of our nation, not just our survival as a superpower or the survival of our middle class, but whether we are even going to remain a democracy. Right now we are 1929 Germany. The only question is, who is going to be our hitler?
(I want to clarify, I am not saying that any of the presidential candidates are hitler, that is why I said we are 1929 Germany and not, say, 1933 Germany. but the trashing of the constitution plus the building up of the executive branch plus the government run press equals easy dictatorship) posted 05/15/2008 at 07:29:53
When this race started I was an Edwards fan and my wife supported Clinton (including writing several articles in the web magazine she writes for). After Edwards dropped out, I went to Obama. When the state of Washington voted (my and my wife's residence), my wife voted Obama. Why didn't my wife vote for the person she supported for so long? Not because of Obama, she was voting against Clinton because of the attack ads. posted 05/15/2008 at 07:29:21

Why NARAL Pro-Choice America Endorsed Barack Obama

The four sides of the Pro-life/Pro-choice/anti-choice/whatever movement:
Pro-life: Abortion is murder, every child concieved should be born and cared for. In support of this opposes abortion, donates to adoption centers, supports welfare and contraception, supports teaching all forms of birth control in schools.
Pro-choice: A woman should have the right to choose, every child should be born to a family that will love him/her. In support of this supports abortion, welfare, and contraception supports teaching all forms of birth control in schools.
Anti-choice: A woman is chattel for breeding, inferior to men in every way. In support of this opposes abortion (any woman who gets pregnant should be punished by the child), opposes welfare and contraception (any woman who gets pregnant should be reviled and homeless, no woman should have sex outside marriage), opposes child support (see above), supports "abstenance only," sex ed in schools (see above).
Whatever: No strong position, some examples: "I'm male, and women should decide this issue without me butting in." "I live my life, you live yours, we are cool."
A subset of the whatever crowd wish both sides of the debate would take 10% of the money spent on ads and spend it on science to either invent an artificial womb or provide better prenatal care and care of premies. posted 05/15/2008 at 07:59:30
Wait, before roe vs wade women had to have abortions to avoid social stigma, now they are only having them if they need them. So what you are saying is that the number of abortions per woman went down after it became illegal.
Now I am confused, are you saying you want abortions legal to reduce the number, or are you saying you want them to be illegal so that there will be more abortions and more women who need them will die?
If the latter, not sure you can call yourself pro-life. posted 05/15/2008 at 07:52:20

Do Republicans Believe In Free Markets?

Of course, when you say gold you mean gold coins, minted by governments. The reason only government coins were accepted is that they garunteed the gold content. Otherwise you didn't know if you had a gold coin or a lead coin with gold coating.
Later governments introduced paper certificates worth a certain amount of gold, and finally they dropped the gold standard entirely (at one point you could take US dollars to any bank and withdraw gold coins or bars).
So what gold standard are you talking about, the government one? posted 05/15/2008 at 08:18:51

Same with New York, Oregon, Washington, and a lot of the North-east.

I could never vote for McCain, or most republicans, but Clinton's supporters (i.e. you) are making it impossible for me to vote for her.
Guess we will find out what a McCain presidency is like, including war with Iran, lower taxes for the rich, spending cuts in Medicaid and all other federal programs, and the repeal of Roe Vs Wade by the new Supreme court.

You Broke It, You Own It -- Obama Style

Well, lets get out the old crystal ball...
If Clinton is the candidate, Dems lose the presidency and lots of seats in the US Senate and House. Key governorships and state legislative seats also fall, as Clinton's name is the best GOTV tool for the Repubs and the young voters who came out for Obama learn that the game is fixed and we may as well not vote.
If Obama is the candidate, even if he loses, we will have more Dems in the house and senate than if Clinton is the candidate, and fewer loses in state positions.
But if you prefer McCain to Obama, who am I to argue, hope you are pro-life, don't care about the enviornment (McCain's plan won't do anything but add hot air to the global warming debate), and don't want a minimum wage increase. Hope you enjoy the war with Iran too! posted 05/14/2008 at 18:18:03

Six Reasons Why Obama and Clinton Would Each Say "Yes" to VP

Unfortunatly, Clinton would be more of a liability than an asset on the ticket. She has high negatives, and would draw a lot of Republicans to vote against her. Then those same folks would vote against the Democrats "downstream," on the ticket, costing the party seats in the House and Senate, as well as governorships and other state offices. Hillary on the ticket would hurt the party, sorry. posted 05/14/2008 at 08:18:21

In Defense of Being Educated

Ultimatly, there is a reason for Clinton's vote advantage among voters with less education: Name recognition.
In state after state we have seen the same pattern, only lately changing as Obama's face has gained familiarity. Clinton starts with huge lead, Obama introduces himself, folks who listen to him/learn about him change to his side, Obama wins or greatly decreases Clinton's lead. That is why Florida is a biased vote, Obama didn't get to introduce himself because he followed the rules and didn't campaign there.
Now why do I bring this up regarding education? Well, who has more leasure time, who talks politics more, who reads more and watches less TV? College educated folks have the time to look at issues, High school folks are more likely to have two jobs, to have to do more work for less pay, and just don't have the time. So, in general, (I know lots of Clinton supporters have done their research too), Clinton wins the folks who vote on name recognition, Obama wins the folks who researched the issues. posted 05/14/2008 at 11:27:57

Health Care As the New Terrorist to Fear

You do realize that under Hillary's plan you would be penalized if you decide you can't afford your $22,634.00 premium?
What we really need, which no candidate has had the balls to propose, is an option to opt into Medicare/Medicaid. Stupid People of 2008 #241: "Postcard" Malware Hoaxers

I got a similar e-mail telling me that there was a time bomb virus and telling me exactly where in my computer to look. If I had followed the instructions I would have disabled Java and crippled my computer. There are similar ones for a lot of essential componants of your computer.
While the urban legends is a place to look, I have a better recommendation. Go to McAfee's web site or Norton's web site. They have a list of the viruses they are worried about, and it is pretty all-inclusive (even including ones they already protect against). If your virus isn't on there, check their spam e-mail list, you will probably find your "virus," there.
Every time I get an e-mail like the one you described I go to one or both of those sites, find the proof that it is a hoax, and send the proof, along with the web pages, to everyone the original hoax was sent to. posted 05/14/2008 at 07:22:34

The Most Important Piece of Paper in America

Last I checked, slavery was repealed in the 1860's. Less than 100 years after the US was founded. Now if you want to include wage slaves (folks who were exploited by big corporations before the bankruptcy laws that were repealed a few years ago), then you have more of a point. Still, a strong middle class does more to create wealth than finding ways to keep people down and exploit them for cheap labor, because cheap labor is by nature low value labor. Skilled labor produces more for the economy. posted 05/12/2008 at 07:39:53

How National Debt Is Contributing to Public Disenchantment with Government

Lets just repudiate our debt...
If we say we won't pay it, we will never be able to borrow again. The dollar will go in the toilet, which will make imports too expensive and our exports cheap enough to revitalize our industrial base. Why You Shouldn't Spend Your Stimulus Check

Engine and Wagon

For anyone who couldn't read that, he is saying that the big corporations no longer represent US interests, even though they still have US names. Also, we are headed into a period of economic problems which will hurt those big US corps.
(grossly simplified)
Now my thoughts:
I think the US is hurting far worse than other nations-altough it is certainly from self inflicted wounds. I think (hope) that Europe and Japan can maintain an industrial base and middle class while China and India develop their middle class to the healthy point that an industrial nation has. If that occurs, then the world at large will only experience a recession as the US falls into inevitable third world status. I say inevitable because we spent too much, borrowed too much, and can't produce enough value to pay off our debts. Besides which, we are too used to spending more than we earn, and we are not going to "tighten our belts," until we are forced to. Probably by a combination of depression and inflation that will make the 70's look like the 20's.
The other problem I have with your analysis is that you worry too much about the companies. What about the workers? The consumers? Your audience is primarily not investors on this site, it is educated professionals looking for an intellectual edge. We are consumers and workers who want to know when to duck and which way to jump. posted 04/24/2008 at 16:57:18

Is Hillary Clinton Push Polling?

Hillary knows how to anger a portion of the party base that Democrats can't win without. If she is the nominee, Repubs will come out to vote against her, and Blacks won't bother to show up and vote. Expect McCain to win by a landslide and get both houses of congress for the Repubs too. With a mandate like that he can invade Iran and cut the tax rates to 0 for millionaires.

Last Night Clinton Won the Pennsylvania Primary, but Lost the War for the Nomination

(con't)
So lets look at the electability...
Fla was a toss up, but Clinton turned a non-issue into a big issue, probably costing Obama the state, and future democrats too. In four years they will forget why they don't like dems, they will just remember that they don't. Not that it matters, the state has been trending Rep for a while, and should be written off anyway.
Before the primary, there was a lot of discussion about how Dems could make up for the loss of Fla. The answer was the mountain west. The area between Texas and California has been Republican, but for different reasons than the rest of the nation, and the Reps did a lot of things that turned these folks off. Look up Tester and you will see what their response was. So if the Dem's hope is to take the mountain west, who can do that for them??? posted 04/23/2008 at 18:49:07
Well, those polls are probably not representative of the views that will be held in November. Look at the folks who are saying this, and try to figure out why. To the extent that it is bitterness at an attack, real or percieved, on their preferred candidate, those voters will tend to come around. Of course, they may sway independants during their "bitter," period, but the losses should be small.
The "racist," factor, and I suppose the "sexist," factor probably won't shift so much. The flip side of that is the question of how many racists or sexists would vote Dem anyway...
Then you have the youth vote. These folks probably won't vote for McCain or Clinton, regardless of what they say. The youth don't normally vote. There is evidence that they will show up for Obama, so there is a net gain for him.
Advantage Obama.
Now, for the large states arguement...
Do you really think that New York, California, Washington, Oregon, or Mass will go Republican, regardless of the Dem candidate? The Northeast and West are Dem strongholds, and they only affect the general in the popular vote contest, which is more important to cheerleaders than anyone else. It's about the electoral college people. posted 04/23/2008 at 18:48:44
perhaps, perhaps not...
If our folks stay positive, and point out the differences between not only eachother, but between them and McCain, this could be positive. The DNC already came out for Clinton, the elected folks tend towards Obama. Now you just have to do the math.
Of course, you might wonder why these superdelegates who are elected representatives tend towards Obama... Probably because they don't want the big turnout of Republicans who will show up if Hillary is on the ticket, and who will hurt every Democrat down the line. That is why Rush and Pat Buchanan and other Republican strategists are so desperate for Hillary to win. As an Obama supporter, I find your logic dangerous. First, to some extent what you say is probably true anyway, and doesn't need some official statement. If you look at the young voters coming out of the woodwork for Obama, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that they will disappear just as quickly if he isn't the nominee.
But if you try to make something official, you encourage the Clinton supporters to vow the same. These are the regular party folks, who don't have the time to research, and just vote for the familiar and safe choice. If they boycott, Obama loses.
Ironically, they have more at stake than we do. Obama's supporters can bounce back from McCain, Clinton's supporters will be devistated if he wins. How will Clinton's supporters feel about the rollback of roe vs wade, for instance?
But now is the time to build bridges, not fences. Obama already won, we just need to let Clinton have an honorable out, so that her supporters can support Obama instead of voting against their best interests because they are bitter and clinging (grin). posted 04/22/2008 at 23:02:46

Thoughts on Pennsylvania, Clinton and Obama from a "Realisticrat"

Here is a Realisticrat question, what matters more, the winner of this presidency, or the political future of the country?
Clinton brings huge negatives and a wave of dispirited republicans who will only come out to vote if it is against her. While they are there, they will vote for the Repub senators, representatives, and state officials, so expect our gains of 2006 to go away if she is on the ticket.
Obama brings a wave of young voters who have been more energized to vote than any group their age in history. If he is the nominee, expect them to give us an edge for at least 20 years. If he isn't, expect them not to bother to vote.
So if Clinton has a 65% chance of beating McCain, and Obama only has a 60% chance, is that extra 5% worth it? Do You Need to "Believe" in Climate Change?

So what contention do you dispute? Do you think that greenhouse gasses do not raise temperatures? Do you believe that we are not producing greenhouse gasses? Do you not believe that the amount of gasses has a significant effect?
More importantly, what is your margin of error of your believe, and what is your cost/benefit analysis?
If there is a 20% chance that global climate change will cost us 60 trillion dollars, and an 80% chance it will not (which is wildly optimistic towards your point of view), then logically spending 12 trillion dollars-more than the entire US GDP-to prevent it is the only intelligent action.
Otherwise you are saying that there is no doubt, global climate change is impossible (or it is impossible that it is caused by human action), and so spending money on it is dumb. If so, you are no longer arguing that there is still dispute, you are hiding under your blanket singing "la la la I'm not listening." posted 04/22/2008 at 23:30:33

Has The Great American Shopping Spree Finally Ended?

Even better were the "cash back," deals. You buy a $20,000 car for $25,000 and get $3000 cash back, then you spend the three grand and have a debt greater than the value of the asset, on an asset that depreciates faster than the debt is paid off. But the cash back is a "reward," for putting yourself in debt, and works well to get folks to buy a new car before they need to.

Privately Rich, Publicly Poor

Who will stop them? Ironically, the economy.
I'm not sure if it is the "hand or god," or the "invisible hand of the free market," or what, but you see something interesting if you look at economics and politics. Take the US for example, stocks rally when Repubs win, but then don't perform as well. Stocks drop when dems win, but then perform better. Extrapolate this out as much as you want.
When pro-business interests control the government, they stifle innovation, promote waste and inefficiency, and ultimatly hurt not only the economy, but even the companies they are trying to help. Want an example, look at US vs European internet bandwidth-we invented the internet for gosh sakes. Look at US vs European health care, productivity, consumers, currency...
The US faces a long, hard road through a dark night, and the only lights we will be able to see are the stars of Europe. Let Them Eat Cake: Now Here Are Real Elitists

"Elitist," is a code word, which has been used so much we forget what it means. Yes, by the book the definition is someone in the elite (top) generally financially. But if you look at the practical use, it is used by Republicans to describe any people at the top financially who are Democrats.
When a Republican says "Elitist," he means class traitor, it is fine for someone like Bush or McCain to be filthy rich and have no clue what it is like to be poor, because they are looting and pilliaging the poor. Here is the problem.
At one time, we had something called cooperatives, Mutual of Omaha was a "mutual," insurance company. Likewise, a lot of banks were credit unions.
Big corperations saw this and said "Hey, this is unfair, how can we gouge people for money if they can just form a company to provide their needs. We would have to compete against our customers." So they did the only logical thing, they went to congress and got laws passed. Mutual of Omaha had to issue stock, and stop being member owned. Most of the credit unions survived, but they are required to restrict membership. Don't believe me, go to your nearest credit union and ask to join. They will ask if you are part of their membership class, and if you are not you will be unable to join.
Now if we asked our congresspeople to end those laws, we would all have the right to join a credit union. Imagine a bank that you own, that answers to you...
Could you trust that bank? posted 04/21/2008 at 10:44:39

Breast Fed Up

There are a lot of pros, and a few cons, to breastfeeding. My wife has done this for all three of our children, and I am very proud of her. Still, I agree wholeheartedly with you, it is entirely her (your) choice. Men (me) especially should but out of the discussion. Women should remember the last time some woman looked down their nose at you and said something like "are you REALLY going to..." and also but out.
You will have to do a bit more PT to get rid of the baby fat, and you need to make sure you take extra care of nutrition as soon as they get off formula, but at least you don't get bit. I hear from my wife every time one of them gets their teeth.
Also remember this, you are worrying about your children, that shows you care. If you do the best you can for them, you have done your job as a Mom, and they will love you for it. And as someone who lost his mother before he said "I love you mom," enough times, know that they do love you, please. posted 04/16/2008 at 11:48:10

The Real Feminist Thing To Do is Acknowledge Hillary's Failures as a Candidate and Move On

If Hillary had never married Bill, would you know who she is???
No, you wouldn't.
Hillary is the anti-feminist female candidate. If she was elected, all that folks would say is that she was elected to give Bill another term. Is that the legacy you want from the first female candidate? Well, a woman president is OK, as long as she has a strong man to run the presidency for her?
If you want a female president, you need a Nancy Pelosi or Cindi Sheehan or even Oprah. A woman who has risen on her own merits, not on the coattails of her husband. That goes double for the first one! posted 04/16/2008 at 12:52:33

Wal-Mart for President?

I remember when the city of Wasilla, Alaska, wanted to extend it's borders so that the Walmart built just outside the city limits would pay the same local sales taxes that the shops in town paid. After fighting it a while Walmart gave in. Then they built a new Walmart just outside the new borders and left the old building to rot.
As for the always lowest prices, I guess... Generally something that costs 59.99 somewhere else costs 59.96 or 59.97 there. I can always use more pennies, can't you? posted 04/11/2008 at 07:49:31

An Idea for Obama's Public Financing Quandry

Well, I would judge the capabilities of Clinton and Obama based on the evidence of past achievements. In the case of Obama we only have his campaign, where he has been inclusive, mobilized the public, and defeated the special interests with that support.
Clinton gives two examples to work with, her campaign and her universal health care plan (the first one). The former: lost a huge lead, infighting of her upper ranks, top down system...not so good. The latter, run by special interests, infighting and brinksmanship, ultimatly went down in flames as even those who supported her idea opposed her plan...also not so good.

Why Progressives Should Support the Draft and Why Aren't People Protesting McCain's Lack of Patriotism?

By civic duty, to some extent he was referring to the things that only a scumbag would refuse, as opposed to requirements of law. A true patriot joins the military when his/her nation goes to war, even if they disagree with the war. A patriot supports the government, the common infrastructure (highways anyone? Police?), and the poor through taxes. That is why the people amended the constitution to allow a legal income tax. A patriot votes, even if only to vote against the greater evil. And a patriot will serve on a jury to insure that justice remains in the hands of the people, and not in the hands of the state.
I do agree with you that a standing military as currently constituted was not the founders intent. There are a few good stories on West Point, and the impression I formed was that the military is intended to provide a corps of leaders (officers and senior enlisted) who can quickly mobilize the population and use them effectivly in war, and who can defend the nation until the general force is trained. If that were required, I think our current military would do that job quite well.
Still, there is no greater traitor than a tax evader. posted 04/10/2008 at 13:58:47
I do agree with you that the separation of the military viewpoint from the civilian viewpoint is dangerous. On the plus side, that very "better than you," attitude is the result of a very real desire to protect democracy and the constitution, and it is probably the only buffer left between the US and the decline from Republic to Dictatorship experienced by Rome. Right now you have the same sort of military as Turkey, which is a good thing. Wait 50 years and we will have the same sort of military as Rome had when Ceasar was general. posted 04/10/2008 at 13:52:21
Well I support the limited draft. If a person says we should support the war, and they have no family members in it, they, or their nearest military age relative, should immediatly be drafted and sent to Iraq. Starting with One of the Bush daughters.
I do think you oversimplify the military culture, perhaps because you see only the officer side of it. What I see is a combination of poor/minority kids who join because it is the only place they get a fair shake, and the "military families." The former tend to be in the enlisted ranks, the latter over time realize the advantage of the officer ranks. That is also where "upper class," folks like myself who already had a degree when we joined up go.
I always wondered if to some extent the idea behind the Iraq war was for WASPs to watch minorities and catholics kill muslims, thereby slowing the growth of those "undesirable," groups (undesirable in the opinion of the WASPs, not myself). If so, the sending of people who are willing to give everything for their country to die so that a particular religious or racial group can gain an advantage is worse than any other war crime I can imagine. It is genocide in practice. posted 04/10/2008 at 13:52:05

From the Street: An Iraqi's Anniversary Advice to the Next President

Mr. Trouble-appropriate name by the way.
Yes, either al-Sistani or Sadr could disband the militia tomorrow. At that point all of those armed, trained, warriors would cease to be an organized force and become individials, small groups, etc of leaderless warriors. How would that be a good thing?
Keep in mind that Iraq is the NRA's dream, every house has an AK-47. This is a fact of life.
By the way, did you notice that the battle against the Mahdi Army was primarily by the Badr Corps-a militia that is beholden to Iran? Basically what you are asking is that the Anti-Iran forces in the south of Iraq capitulate to Iran. posted 04/11/2008 at 09:26:08

What Does Recession Mean? It Means Economic Suffering

Here is the problem with inflation.
Say you get the same 3% raise you are used to. Inflation has made our exports cheap, so your job is safe. Then you take your wages to the store, and milk is $5. Oops, that's inflation, all the things you want to buy have gone up in price, by more than 3%, so your wage has effectively gone down. It is possible that inflation will do to wages what all the repubs couldn't, force us to the wage level of China.
Still, we spend a lot, on a lot of junk. Perhaps not having the money for the 14th pair of shoes or the latest gizmo advertised on late night TV would be a good thing. Maybe we should look at quality of living rather than cost of living. You know, make meals from scratch instead of eating out (saving hundreds of dollars), only owning enough clothing to fit in a standard closet instead of a walk in model, stuff like that.
We keep trying to buy more and more stuff, and stuff doesn't make you happy. You as a person are more than your job. Take time for your family instead of working extra hours for the promotion. Think about one spouse working part time so he/she can spend more time with the kids. Go camping, walking, hiking, biking. Play tennis, volleyball, catch. Run around your neighborhood and say hi to your neighbors instead of buying a gym membership. posted 04/08/2008 at 12:24:43

Democracy Calling

Ummm, No.
The largest part of anti-Americanism is caused by US policies.
Every time we bomb a country, a lot of them dislike us for a while. Similarly, when we provided aid to Indonesia after the earthquake and flood a lot of them, and even folks of the same religion 1000 miles away, liked us more.
If you look at the folks who dislike us and oppose our policies, you will find that they are far more heavily influenced by what we did than what a few Americans said.
That said, a lot of anti-Americanism is caused by US citizens outside our borders. When Americans visit a country and start telling everyone that they are doing this, that, and the other thing wrong, it tends to give those people a negative impression. But that has been the case for years, read "The innocents abroad," by Mark Twain for an example.
And yes, our Chief Executive must represent the interests of the citizens of the US to the best of his/her ability. Of course that means working with other nations to prevent folks hating us enough to hijack our planes and crash them into our buildings. This is why you need to work well with others... posted 04/07/2008 at 07:29:08

Attention Entertainment Industry: Stop Portraying Us

Well, I was disappointed with what I heard about stop-loss, and I agree that we need a good war movie, but it is more important that the screenwriter/writers and possibly the director are vets than the actors. If you take a bunch of vets and have a director make them read lines for a war movie written by a non-vet, you will just get more of the same.
The funny thing is that I am writing an article right now about a band called Chasing Corona which is being played on our local radio station. Their Singer was on the Cole when it was hit, and the Guitarist was "next door," on a nearby ship in the gulf. That is where they met, in the gulf. So be careful saying that vets are not on the radio-well, those guys are both still serving, so maybe they are not vets (grin). posted 04/04/2008 at 07:58:35

When the Focus of the Campaign Becomes Campaigning

I'm going to suggest a theory my wife had months ago, I am starting to wonder if it is true...
Is Clinton trying to lose?
She has run a pitiful campaign and squandered every advantage, perhaps there is a reason for that. With her high negatives she probably realized that she not only couldn't win the presidency, but that she would hurt the party is she was the nominee.
Still, by running, she keeps Republican attention, and delays their attacks on Obama. She has been attacking Obama, but even that seems to be helping him, especially because of when she is doing it. After all, McCain's lobbyistgate was released when it would have the least effect on him by the NY times to help him, not hurt him. Perhaps Hillary is attacking Obama early and weakly so that the repub attacks will be "old news," by the time they launch them.
Looked at this way, Hillary is the self-sacrificing hero of the party. But you can only look at it this way if you accept that she won't win. posted 04/02/2008 at 15:09:03

Rapists in the Ranks

29 to 41% is about the same as the civilian community, and it is probably the same small percentage of perps as well. There is definatly something wrong on the enforcement side, but you can't call every soldier a rapist because they have the same problem you have in the civilian world. As for "Heroes my arse," if you don't like the military you have, join it and make it better. Heck, I was against the war when I joined up, but I still joined because my country was going to war, and the people willing to die for our country deserve the best we can give them. All I had to offer was my service, so I signed up.
The folks who slam the military for risking their very lives for your freedom are every bit as bad as the chicken hawks who spend their blood too freely.
And yes, even though I serve in the military, I see myself as apart. I am too much of an odd duck to last long in the service, I will just do my best as long as I am allowed to. But I am not a hero, I have seen heroes, and I am just a man. posted 04/01/2008 at 15:20:36
Rep Harman,
I agree with everything you say, but what do you propose to do?
I'm serious, the Military has a culture, and it is as different from the American mainstream as the Eskimo culture. As a former resident of Alaska, I always suspected that the higher rate or rape reporting in the native american community up there is more due to more reporting than more rape.
It is worth noting that although at least 1 in 3 women, and 1 in 6 men, have been raped, but a tiny percentage of the population commit the acts. In other words, each rapist is committing the crime at least 20 times either before they are caught, or without getting caught. This is in the civilian community!
But back to the topic, yes, it is horrible, but how do you protect them? How do you change a culture that is designed to resist change? Perhaps segregated units are the answer, as difficult as that would make life for the detailers, but that just opens the door for other discrimination. Perhaps every servicewoman should have a recording device they can turn on to prove that they said no? I'm not trying to be difficult, but regulations and congressional meetings won't do anything, either step up to the plate or openly admit you don't know how to fix it and ask for ideas. posted 04/01/2008 at 15:15:16

I still don't get the "electorial college," argument, either we are counting all democratic votes, or we should only count "purple states," but saying Hillary has won more large, dependably democratic states so we should pick her makes no more sense than saying that Edwards has more support among haircutters (joke).
Still, the reason so many are calling for Hillary to drop out is not that she should not have her chance, but that she has effectivly lost and is trying below the belt shots and ear biting to make up for it. If she would run a clean campaign, respecting the fact that her opponant is a Democrat, she could stay on till the convention and not be a problem, and in the process set herself up as a viable choice if Barrack stumbles. By doing this she would also open up the Repubs to attack Barrack, so we could see him fight back against the real opponants. Then if she is right that he isn't tough enough we would see it. But as long as she is campaigning for McCain, she is no asset to the Democratic party, and should expect Democrats to boo, hiss, and call for her to get out. Not just out of the race, but out of the party too. Let her join Leiberman in the repub lapdog convention. posted 03/31/2008 at 08:36:40

Why the Administration Won't Define Success in Iraq

There are clear metrics to show success or failure in Iraq, and so far they are all looking good from the perspective of the people who wanted the war. Some examples:
Price of Oil, up and very high, success.
Halliburton profits, up and very high, success.
Formation of private Christian/Republican Army at Gov't expense (Blackwater), success.
Just because the powers that be don't tell you their metrics, doesn't mean they are not monitering them closely. posted 03/28/2008 at 10:50:49
