Right Wing Radio Host Michael Savage Says 99 Percent Of Autistic Children Are Misdiagnosed Brats

"They don't have a father around to tell them, `Don't act like a moron. You'll get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. Straighten up. Act like a man. Don't sit there crying and screaming, you idiot.'"

It is sad that this is Savage's notion of what a father should say to a small child. It gives us a window into Savage's own bleak childhood, with a verbally abusive father. posted 07/22/2008 at 08:26:39

Top Clinton Adviser Howard Wolfson Joining Fox News

Ewwww, Lanny Davis, too. I think that I had a nightmare once where Karl Rove debated Lanny Davis. I was ashamed to be a Democrat. Rove was pithily discussing the military's new plan to put the disabled vets to good use by removing the good limbs from brain damaged ones and attaching them to amputees. Lanny hid under his chair, calling Rove a 'big bully' and demanding to see his mommy.

Or maybe this was just a late night preview I caught while channel surfing. It's getting harder and harder to tell the difference. posted 07/08/2008 at 07:25:31

This has attracted trolls, and bloggers who love a good chance to feel important. posted 07/05/2008 at 21:49:09

My Position On FISA

The original bill that has been in effect is far worse than the compromise, and I agree that repealing it altogether and starting over is the best option. But neither you, I or Obama have the power to repeal it.

If the compromise is not passed, the original, with it's greater potential for abuse of presidential power, remains in effect.

If we expect Obama to do more than he has authority to do, and make unreasonable and impossible demands on our candidate, we are not doing our job as citizens and voters.

What I hear from O is straight talk about what he can accomplish now and what he can reasonably succeed at accomplishing as president. I respect this tremendously. I don't want Brave New World campaign speeches, or balloons and stars promises that can't be made real.

Visionary goals are necessary but you can't get there without taking steps, one at a time, and moving towards your goal as a team. You can't always kick a goal from midfield. Most of the time you rely on a strategy that moves the ball forward in stages. posted 07/06/2008 at 12:30:33

Obama Must Be Doing Something Right: He's Got The Fundamentalists of the Left and Right Upset

Great article, Mr. Schaeffer.

Do you know who really gets thrown under the bus lately? Those of us who are Christians, not evangelicals, politically progressives- the majority of people of faith in this country. We are maligned by the religious right for not accepting their peculiar brand of Fundamentalist Christianity, which I find to be rubbish. Any 'literal interpretation' of scripture based solely on a flawed translation of original text, and no historical context, is unappealing to mainstream Christians. Yet we are condemned to Hell weekly by evangelical congregations.

And when the atheistic left opens their collective mouth, all people of faith are accused of being Fundies and evangelicals. Nothing I can say interrupts this Star Wars delusional mentality that the world is divided into Good Guys and Bad Guys, and anyone who doesn't agree with everything they think is automatically part of the Empire.

Sometimes it looks like practically no one can handle thinking beyond simplistic dual morality boxes. posted 07/04/2008 at 10:16:05

Seven Things Barack Obama Should Do to Keep from Blowing It

I don't see O as running towards the middle. Regarding FISA, I see him as accepting a compromise when compromise is the only available choice. Moving forward towards the goal is better than not moving at all. His explanation makes sense.

I agree that all of O's supporters who "brung him to the dance" have a say in what he does. But I don't believe that this privilege extends as far as accusing him of hidden motives, or having an agenda that he denies. There is no evidence other than speculation that O is doing anything other than what he says he is- making the best choice among less than desirable possibilities, taking a stand for the value of faith based social programs while being conscientious about the constitutional boundaries under which they might be funded.

I would caution all Obama supporters to examine issues carefully before forming opinions. And allow that he might make decisions that you don't agree with without it meaning that he is tap dancing for pundit approval, selling out to lobbyists (I've read this on a HuffPo blog) or showing signs of his true neocon nature (read that in comments). We don't need a left wing version of a Jeremiah Wright freak out. posted 07/03/2008 at 12:57:26

McCain Pledges Allegiance to NAFTA

This is the most important key in understanding how our economy has (literally) gone south.

The true cost of NAFTA is not fully comprehended until one takes measure of the violation of environmental and human rights that global corporations can get away with by moving factories outside US jurisdiction and still selling in US markets duty free.

Not Every Moderate Move By Obama Is A "Sista Souljah" Moment

Thanks for being today's voice of reason, Seth Colter Walls. I've failed to see the logic in the "centrist tack" that O is accused of making. His statements, policies, and reasoning are completely consistent with what he's always said.

I loathe how quickly knee-jerk opinions are formed. The same people who are furious at 'Obama is a Muslim' lies can somehow assume that all (or most) people of faith are right wingnuts who believe in Creation Science and Right to Life. Obama has been condemned for flip flopping on FISA by those who don't even get that FISA was revised, that it is an improvement over the former, and that the compromised FISA will at least curtail some of the abuses in the former one.

Any community organizer knows that some progress in the right direction is better than no progress.

Compromising is not equal to capitulation.

I'm a MoveOn member who actually agreed with the Betrayus wording. But I respect O's tact in not using incendiary language. He is an effective politician because he's very astute at showing mutual respect. posted 07/01/2008 at 15:05:17

"Whistling Past Dixie" Author: Obama Will Lose The South

This argument is swiss cheese (full of holes). It is quite possible for Obama to win NC, and, in fact, polls show him leading at the moment. For one, O will energize the black vote by WAY more than 5%. 10% would be a conservative prediction. I predict it to be energized by at LEAST 25%. And yes, we are the 6th most Rep state in the nation, but McC is not appealing to the southern Rep at all. And even the low info voters know that Bush is destroying our economy.

This article doesn't mention O's other strengths- educated white voters and young voters. We are mobilized here. In Obama's community organizing days, he found that the only effective inroads into poor black communities were local church congregations. Like it or not, churches are doing a far better job of meeting the physical needs of vulnerable and powerless people than government or secular agencies. My church, for ex, uses 30% of our budget for prison outreach, environmental protection, local human rights support, poverty intervention, etc. We also give hundreds of volunteer hours each week along with our money. People who come to us get treated like valued human beings- not their experience with gov't agencies.

The majority of church communities are moderate or very liberal congregations. Secular liberals have to wake up and stop assuming that all faiths are fundamentalist. Your bias against all faith is senseless, and needlessly divides you from natural progressive allies. posted 07/01/2008 at 11:11:04

Winning to Change or Changing to Win: Obama and the Progressive Dilemma

"We should neither condemn nor indulge our candidate. Rather we need to speak to him clearly. We need to tell him that we are building a movement that is not about him." (etc)

The fragile fallacy in this argument is that there is no "we" without Obama. He has drawn a coalition unlike any previous candidate. His majority status is not built from typical Democratic liberal news junkies like us. If it were, we would have nominated Dennis Kucinich, and then lost the general election worse than Mondale/Ferraro. If you get involved in Obama's volunteer staff, you'll see a lot of formerly apoliticos. Young, idealistic smart kids, blacks who are unusually open and almost trusting, cutting edge new paradigm thinkers, visionaries, artists, musicians, organic farmers, off-the-grid old hippies, yuppies with their Woodstock dreams revived.

The movement is not about "him", but it is also not about the old "we" either. Obama has tapped a sleeping giant of American idealism, akin to what MLK stirred up in people. This, I believe, is where real change comes from. Obama is brilliant at setting priorities that speak to the hearts and minds of disenfranchised people. No one can win every issue all at once. You have to allow the process to unfold. posted 06/30/2008 at 12:38:55

Giving the "Daughter Test" to Mainstream Media

Let's see... construction workers catcall and harass young women, and somehow this example morphs into how all the negative stuff said about Hillary is sexual harassment, or maybe just sexism. And I should be concerned that my daughter will continue to be harassed if I don't do something about it.

Sorry, I don't see it that way. What I see is that calling all criticism and even derision of Hillary another horrid example of sexism sends a self defeating message to my daughter. If she competes for anything and loses, she shouldn't ever assess herself. It was all due to sexism.

The Hillary campaign trivialized real sexism and misogyny by constantly bringing up unclear innuendos as reasons for anger and protest. Her campaign also ignored the blatantly sexist statements from Carville and others within her own camp.

There are younger, poorer, less privileged women than HRC who could use voices of protest on their behalf. There are far worse abuses being perpetrated in our society than getting bad press. Why is she the only woman getting all this "feminist" support? posted 06/16/2008 at 19:22:01

Obama's Father's Day Speech Urges Black Fathers To Be More Engaged In Raising Their Children

As a volunteer tutor in the public housing projects, I see that poor black children are enormously disadvantaged when it comes to getting a good public school education. By second grade, most of my kids suffer from severe low self esteem. They are intimidated by the affluent white kids who hand in power point presentations for homework projects, when they don't have a computer at home. We need to level the playing field.

The kids I work with benefit tremendously from having a volunteer listen as they read aloud, and sit with them as they fill out math sheets and prepare class projects. None of my kids has a parent with a HS degree, even if their overworked moms had time to sit with them every day for homework.

Volunteer now! It really makes a difference. posted 06/16/2008 at 13:16:43

Cutting Through The Fog

Great article, Jared.

As David Korten noted, we are socializing losses and privatizing profits.

While Obama's tax plan may be only a piece of a solution, when it is coupled with his restrictions on NAFTA and other trade agreements (which benefit global corporations), effective limitations on insurance price gouging, crackdowns on mortgage fraud, creation of green energy jobs with funded job training, next generation broadband and its expansion into rural areas, Obama can move us into a nation where middle class prosperity is once again possible.

Also, his recognition that rural America has been left out of programs to decrease poverty makes equal opportunity for all a viable future reality. posted 06/16/2008 at 12:08:30

By taxing oil profits, those in the energy service industry have needed incentive to align with solar, wind and other emerging clean alternative energy sources.

Katie Couric: Sexist Media Hurt Hillary Clinton's Chances

I think that admonishing the press for sexist remarks is valid and necessary. What I don't understand is why the misogynist remarks that came from Hillary's own supporters- such as Carville and Gibson, don't received rebukes, and why Hillary herself never addressed or even mentioned them as sexist.

Both claims- that Clinton had more cajones than Obama, and that she had testicular fortitude- assert that only male genitalia and male hormones can give a person strength, courage, and fortitude. These were more direct, more recognizably sexist, that 99% of the remarks made by the press.

Crying 'foul play' when remarks came from outside her camp while ignoring them from within made Clinton's consciousness raising about sexism seem like self serving whining. posted 06/12/2008 at 10:15:53

The (Bill) Clinton Legacy

I get your point about centrism. Economics is different from social politics in that liberal economics cause the social inequities and environmental irresponsibilities that liberals and progressives want to reduce.

My criticisms of Bill Clinton are not personal attacks but rather reasoned assessment of the long range consequences of his economic policies. Clinton made some admirable fiscal decisions such as balancing the budget and even leaving a surplus (which Bush later squandered).

If you can cease thinking in B&W terms, so that any critique of Clinton means a person is anti-Clinton, and therefore a Democratic neo-con, you will better understand my position. I am actually criticizing liberal economics- specifically, Clinton's imprudent and rash push for free trade.

If you can stop looking for left, right, and centrist positions, and start studying what actually works as economic policy, Obama's economic proposals look very sound.

Have you read Obama's economic speech?

NAFTA has been a huge mistake, and anyone who cares about quality of life for US citizens knows that we are deevolving into a third world economy due to NAFTA.

Both NAFTA and the WTO allow corporations to bypass environmental protection and safety laws.

Chapter 11 of NAFTA allows corporations or individuals to sue Mexico, Canada or the United States for compensation when actions taken by those governments (or by those for whom they are responsible at international law, such as provincial, state, or municipal governments) have adversely affected their investments.

For ex: Metalclad, an American corporation, was awarded US$15.6 million from Mexico after a Mexican municipality refused a construction permit for the hazardous waste landfill it intended to construct.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NAFTA

The passage of NAFTA expanded opportunities for corporations to produce cheaply in Mexico on the backs of low paid workers and an unprotected environment while selling dearly in the affluent markets of the United States.

http://davidkorten.com/globalizing-civil-socity

No economist who I respect considers these policies 'centrist.' If Obama is to make good on any of his promises, he will have to put the interests of US citizens, human rights in all countries, and environmental justice ahead of corporate interests. Clinton sold us out, and is a very wealthy man as a result.

Nothing Went Wrong

"If Chicago was calling for war - he would have voted for the war also. "

Obama gave his famous opposition speech in Oct 02 at a time when he was campaigning for the Senate. Obama put his political career on the line to oppose going to war in Iraq, and warned of "an occupation of undetermined length, with undetermined costs, and undetermined consequences." Obama has been a consistent, principled and vocal opponent of the war in Iraq. To oppose the war at a time when the entire country was in a fervor of patriotism, fed by what McClellan has called pro-war propaganda was a risky move.

* In 2003 and 2004, he spoke out against the war on the campaign trail;
* In 2005, he called for a phased withdrawal of our troops;
* In 2006, he called for a timetable to remove our troops, a political solution within Iraq, and aggressive diplomacy with all of Iraq"s neighbors;
* In January 2007, he introduced legislation in the Senate to remove all of our combat troops from Iraq by March 2008.

Initially I thought that Hillary came across as the more dynamic, charismatic candidate. She slipped in my estimation by showing herself to be intellectually disingenuous. Obama, on the other hand, stood the test of intellectual scrutiny. He didn't rely on spin, denial, and his ability to separate the distractions from the issues impressed me.

I turned against Hillary the night that she celebrated her "win" in Fl, after announcing publicly that the results would not count, signing agreements to that effect, and never once taking issue with the fact that Ickes, her top adviser, instigated the 100% sanctions against Fl and Mi.

I turned solidly for Obama after his race speech. I liked that he appealed to our reason as voters, and that he showed a confidence in the basic decency of people in an area- race relations- where decency has not often ruled the day.

Obama may have won many of his voters through charisma and charm but some of us still shine a harsh light of scrutiny on our choices. I voted for Bill C, and could see that his charm made him a winning candidate, but I never ever trusted that his words were more than a political speech. Obama is different. If you read about his life, what emerges is a man who is actually walking his talk. This rare quality isn't offered in a politician every decade. posted 06/09/2008 at 10:48:41

Maybe when Bill took $800,000 for "speaking engagements" in Columbia, flying in a jet loaned to him by businessmen who could make billions if SOMEBODY just supported NAFTA. If you were jaded like me, maybe you'd think that people who pay $800,000 don't give a wife the option of disagreeing with her husband on NAFTA.

Hillary Loses Again

I'm getting hacked off by the hypocricy of those who want to be a spokesperson for all women or all feminists. The class, racial and generational divisions between women are oftentimes wider than what we have in common. The voices that have been truly drowned out in the frenzy of HRC support are those of black feminists for Obama, women like myself who see Barack's mother and wife as much better examples of feminists than Hillary, and young women who don't experience gender as an insurmountable barrier. We are the women who recognize the historic milestones in this primary race, but who still vote based on who best embodies our personal values, hopes and dreams.

The glass ceiling for women was equally cracked by women who seriously considered Hillary but chose someone else instead. We are not so afraid that there will never be another chance for a female president that we must vote for this one now or lose the chance forever. To imply that only voters for Hill advanced the cause of feminism is insulting, and also myopic.

You took Olberman and Matthews to task, implying that a female commentator would see it differently. So what about Rachel Maddox? She has painted a portrait of Hillary as fighting to the end in a scorched earth scenario. My point is that you don't have to see Hillary's campaign as some noble cause in order to be a feminist or a woman. I don't....ain't I a woman? posted 06/08/2008 at 15:37:21

Hillary Clinton Concession Speech: Suspends Campaign, Endorses Obama

BC made $109 million since leaving the white house. They won't be moving into trailers even if they have to pay their own debt. posted 06/07/2008 at 17:12:50
It was a solid concession speech, and gave me a new respect for C-n's oratory prowess. I give her a great deal of credit for (finally) putting the party, and the ideals we all share as Dems, ahead of her personal agenda.

Not convinced that she is a good VP choice, but I'd accept her if O-a makes that choice. She deserves a place in the new admin. I wouldn't have said that before today; she really did the right thing w/ this speech. posted 06/07/2008 at 14:52:50
This C-N spin lie has got to end. She "got more votes" only but counting MI solely for herself, and not using estimates for the caucus states that Obama won.

Every sane and reasonable popular vote count gives O-a a slight lead. You notice she didn't make this decietful claim in today's speech. posted 06/07/2008 at 14:45:45

Obama's Weekend Off: Date With Wife, Hosting Sleepover For Eight Seven-Year Olds

I am becoming a fan of the Obama daughters. It will be a great blessing to us all to watch as they come of age in the White House. posted 06/06/2008 at 14:23:14

Angry Clinton Supporters Start Rallying For McCain

You may be onto something. I know a bitter HRC supporter who fits that description entirely...

What dumbfounds me is that her sycophants don't care about the issues and don't know anything except rumors about O. Their reality is divorced from politics in the real world. And what sickens me is that she and her campaign knowingly fed this fictional reality, hoping that uninformed and undereducated ppl would take the bait.

If you look at her website, you can see where the disinformation originates. It reminds me of the Rep use of "moral majority" ppl. No rationality, all distraction issues used as smokescreens. posted 06/07/2008 at 12:43:18

Dreams From His Mother

. What haunted me most in the pages of Dreams From my Father was Ann's rare capacity for unconditionally love. I was a single mom when my daughter was two, and so I know that the pride that Ann gave her young son in his absentee father and African heritage required truly remarkable spiritual attainment. She must have had that ability that I've so often failed at to let go of resentments, forgive others their shortcomings, and honor them for their aspirations. Is there anything more essentially Christian, more universally at the heart of all true spiritual paths, than to love and to keep faith that the good and light in life will always prevail over the darkness? Ann's never failing push to transform society, her fearless ability to be at the pioneering forefront of cultural change, and her devotion to her children as embodiments of an emerging world without racism are inspirational.

Knowing about Barack's remarkable mom moves his message out of the box of clever political dialog into the possibility that we can create the world that Ann envisioned. It's so much bigger than the hope that a woman or a black man might someday be a US president. It is the belief that raising our kids with values, investing in their education, and encouraging their capacity to dream will lift us all up, and move us to see that true power is about our ability to transform society from the bottom up. posted 06/08/2008 at 10:58:35

Clinton-Backing House Members To "Demand" Hillary As VP

Wexler was brilliant at the RBC. He got Ickes to jump out of his chair in anger. posted 06/05/2008 at 14:43:00
I am very concerned that we cannot, and will not, unify without addressing the victim mentality generated by the Clinton campaign.

There are 2 realities here, two separate narratives. In one, Obama won the primary despite the Rovian tactics used by Clinton strategists. In the alternate Clinton universe, Obama stole the election in conspiracy with the media, by finally manipulating the Rules and Bylaws Committee, even though Clinton supporters were a majority of that committee.

"But I think the winning side should do the reaching out. They have to make sure they reach out to Clinton supporters to solidify the Democratic Party."-according to Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.), a Clinton supporter.

Uh, no- according to me.... the losing side has to undo the damage they did to our party unity by falsely crying 'foul play', and blaming the refs. It's bad sportsmanship in team sports and really really lethal in party politics. posted 06/05/2008 at 11:31:13
