Wow, definately a big buy. That's a lot of viewers that will be watching.

Sounds like our donations are being very well managed. Guess I should go make a extra donation this month, it's being very well spent.

Something Strange is Happening at the Coldest, Driest Place on Earth

Something that isn't being considered in cars burning all that fuel (and power plants, etc)... the heat of combustion. We have hundreds of millions of small furnaces in every car, heating the air. We heat our homes, that heat bleeds out to the air. We burn billions of gallons of fuel, that is a ton of heat that is being pumped into the atmosphere. The earth can only shead heat at a certain rate, by adding that heat you also add to the warming. We've probably burned trillions of gallons of gas over the decades. That's a ton of heat.

Don't forget the billions of people that exist now that never did before. Humans emit heat, far more than the plants that used to occupy the land we take up now. Humans give off about 500 BTU/hr in body heat. There are a bit over 6.83 billion people. That's 3.4 Trillion BTU/hr.

That's the equivalent heat of a giant furnace burning 325 trillion gallons of propane per year. Or 620,000 gallons of propane per SECOND. posted 07/17/2008 at 22:40:36
CO2 trapping heat is a global issue, not a local phenomenon. The reason desert nights are so cold is that locally there is almost no humidity in the air to retain the heat as well as in other areas of the world. Dry air is a great insulator, that's why double paned windows are so efficient. While that may sound backwards that being a good insulator leads to cold nights, it makes sense if you think about it.

Being a good insulator the dry air insulates the ground. The heat remains in the ground. Where as in an area like coastal regions of Florida with humid air, the water in the air soaks up that heat from the ground making for horribly muggy and warm nights. posted 07/17/2008 at 22:24:02

Obama Lead In Newsweek Poll Drops From 15 To 3

Everyone makes a big deal out of these national polls when they mean absolutely nothing. They are measuring basically a "popular vote" when we don't elect on a popular vote. It's the state polls that matter.

JFK beat Nixon 303 to 219 with just a 0.2% lead in popular vote.
Carter beat Ford 297 to 240, with a 2% lead.
Reagan beat Carter 489 to 49 in the EC, but it was just over a 9% popular vote lead.
Bush beat Dukakis 426 to 111, with a bit under 8% popular vote total.
Clinton beat Dole 379 to 159, with just over 8% lead.
Al Gore beat GWB by 543,895 votes, about 0.5%, but lost 271 to 266.

The national popular vote, or polls which measure that, mean little. You can have a blow out in EC vote with a small popular lead difference, you can even win the popular vote and lose the EC.

State polls matter. And this site seems to be the best for showing state polls in an EC graph of the country: http://www.electoral-vote.com/ posted 07/13/2008 at 16:20:08

For one thing she'd has dismantled her campaign infrastructure, she has no money, and she'd not be getting the support of Obama people in the way of aids, donors, or voters. She can't even raise enough to pay her debt now, how the hell do you think she'll be able to mount a full scale campaign at the very last second? Dr. Dobson Has Just Handed Obama Victory

That's the thing that most people don't see....

Those "pro-life" advocates and politicians did not WANT to end abortion. It was their entire play into keeping power. That is why those that were so hard core "pro-life" were also so rabidly for "abstinence only" and against any form of contraception. They didn't WANT abortions to go away. If abortions became an extremely rare occurance, due mostly to medical reasons, and not due to lack of contraception and other issues, then they'd have nothing to use to retain their power.

It's the entire problem with the Republican brand. People are finally seeing through them. It's never been about serving the public. They are against better education because they want to keep Americans ignorant, they are easier to control. They don't want universal healthcare, not because of some "big government" issue like they say, but because they don't want to have their corporate buddies pay for it. They'd rather let "market forces" deal with healthcare, which means the rich get the best coverage, and the poor get nothing.

They wrap themselves in the flag and bludgeon anyone that questions them as being unpatriotic. They do that to keep people from questioning their motives. They've gotten it to where conventional "wisdom" is that they are the patriotic ones and dems are not, that to question the Repubs is unpatriotic.

It's smoke and mirrors. But it's crumbling down finally, partly due to the internet, 24/7 cable news, and places like HuffPo. posted 06/25/2008 at 07:32:58

Waste?!?

I'm sure the people that work in the numerous industries that have earned money from the campaign efforts don't feel it was a waste. I bet that guy that runs the printing press for all those mailers, banners, posters, and signs didn't think his salary was a waste. I bet that woman who's small catering outfit served food at an event didn't think her income was a sate. Or that guy that did stage set up at some townhall, or the guy working a phone bank doing polls for a campaign, or the guy renting out office space to a campaign, or the thousands of other people who's income was benefitted by that money.

None of it was "wasted". It is being spent in the US, for US products, on US workers. The money didn't evaporate. It went to pay the salaries of thousands of US workers. posted 06/25/2008 at 08:59:15

Contributions to Obama by Through 05/31/2008

$200 and Under: $135,684,173 (46.6%)
$200.01 - $499: $28,095,714 (9.6%)
$500 - $999: $24,202,573 (8.3%)
$1000 - $1999: $36,539,292 (12.5%)
$2000 and Over: $66,841,762 (22.9%)

Contributions to McCain Through 05/31/2008

$200 and Under: $32,332,812 (29.3%)
$200.01 - $499: $5,311,440 (4.8%)
$500 - $999: $9,367,921 (8.5%)
$1000 - $1999: $18,233,489 (16.5%)
$2000 and Over: $45,239,157 (40.9%)

"But it is just as true that [Obama] is raising more money from fat cat donations than any candidate in history."

Wrong. The only reason John McCain isn't raising "more" in fat cat donations is he's simply not raising as much overall. Trying to compare in total dollars is rediculous. Compare the percentages if you want to be fair, but despite your claim at the very beginning that was never your intention.

Donors giving $1000 or more:
35.4% of Obama's
57.4% of John McCain's

Now... who is the one that is really being funded by fat cats? That would be John McCain.

Donors giving $499 or less:
56.2% of Obama's
34.1% of McCain's

Oh.. .and Clinton?

52.6% of Clinton's donations came from people giving $1000 or more.

So please... drop this rediculous notion that Obama is being funded largely by "fat cats" more than any other candidate. posted 06/23/2008 at 09:37:07

Bush To Echo McCain's Plan To Drill In Oceans

1) It would take approx 700 new nuclear reactors to produce that much electric. Where do you intend to dispose of that much spent fuel and radioactive waste? How do you propose to secure nearly 800 nuclear reactors from attacks, natural disasters, or accidents? Where do you intend to put SEVEN HUNDRED nuclear reactors? Even if you started building today you'd have a hard time getting 700 built in 15 years.

More nuclear reactors are part of the solution, but entirely nuclear will never happen. And please spare me the entire "France is 80% nuclear" argument. France is slightly smaller than Texas in size. France has passenger rail travel that is used at rates 10x more than the US.

Your "solution" doesn't take into account other major uses of oil... diesel. Trucks, Airlines, Ships, and Railroads use significant amounts of diesel. Electric is simply not viable for these industries. Electric trucks would work for local delivery, but longer distance shipping would require some form of biofuel. Ships - cruise lines, cargo ships, etc will need a fuel, electric won't work. Same thing with Airlines.

I work in the Rail industry, while you *could* convert the rail industry to electric, it would cause trillions. There is currently about 150,000 miles of track in the US. To put overhead electric or third rails would cost as much to do as it took to put in the entire track system.

It's going to take a combination: nuclear, geothermal, wind, solar, biofuels, tidal, hydroelectric, posted 06/18/2008 at 08:31:55

DNC: Investigate McCain For Election Law Violations

No, what bothers us is your complete lack of knowledge on the subject at all, but your willingness to give an opinion on something you know nothing about.

1) Public financing dollars come from VOLUNTARY donations when a person fills out their taxes. It's that little box asking if you want to donate $3.

2) The issue isn't forcing him to take it. The issue is by accepting public financing you are limited to how much you can spend! THAT is the key issue. McCain is the one who proposed these changes. He agreed to take the public money, which then comes with a spending limit, because he was broke. But now that he's got lobbiest and pacs giving him money he wants to get rid of that spending limit. THAT is the issue. posted 06/17/2008 at 19:27:23

McCain: Not So Straight On Energy

You really don't have a clue do you? Increased supply 10 years from now will NOT affect prices to lower now. You are a complete fool if you believe that. Also...shocker... hold on to your hat... there is *not* a supply problem currently. Despite what the whacko right wingers tell you, there is NOT a supply problem of oil. There isn't even a refining issue (they aren't at capacity). When Bush asked Saudi Arabia to increase production a few weeks ago they said "we aren't going to pump more just to store it in our ships". Translation: we can't even sell all that we have right now.

There is no supply problem. The price of oil is being driven entirely by a weak dollar and the market traders manipulating prices. It's not much difference than the tech stocks years ago, where traders raise the prices of those stocks to multiples more than their "worth" based on speculation. Eventually it crashed down... just as oil will at some point.

And the main problem with your argument of "well we'll have it in 10 years".... if we put our money into alternative fuels and energy now... we'd have THAT running full speed in 10 years. All you want to do is postpone the inevitable a decade further down the road. If the Repubs hadn't blocked the alternate energy ideas back in the 70's we'd not be stuck where we are now. posted 06/18/2008 at 09:22:25

Patti Solis Doyle, Former Clinton Campaign Manager, Hired By Obama Camp

No offense, but maybe take a tiny bit of time to actually research something before you form an opinion based on no facts and wild guesses.

Matt Rodriguez
In 2006 Rodriguez ran Kevin de León's successful campaign for Assembly in California's 45th District (Los Angeles). District director for Rep. Marty Meehan in Lowell, Mass. Campaign manager for Sen. Chris Dodd (D-CT)'s 2004 re-election campaign. Deputy political director on Dick Gephardt's campaign for the 2004 Democratic presidential nomination and previously at Gephardt's leadership PAC, the Effective Government Committee. A year as a volunteer teacher in Roxbury, Mass. Ran the 2nd CD for Sen. Bill Bradley's 2000 NH primary campaign. Volunteer teacher with the Jesuit Corps in Roxbury, Mass. for three years. Graduate of Holy Cross University with a degree in Spanish.

Maybe because the guy has qualifications? Maybe because he's run a successful campaign in California? Maybe because he speaks fluent spanish?

Honda's Zero-Emission Car Unveiled: FCX Clarity

There are many ways of getting hydrogen without using hydrogen cracking of petroleum. With a more widespread demand for hydrogen they'll become more economically viable and commonplace.

There are even algaes that will release hydrogen instead of oxygen during the photosynthesis process with a slight change in nutrients. This is already being done in a few European countries to produce hydrogen.

Another method would be nuclear. Nuclear reactors would create electric for use during the day during peak demand times, and at night during low demand they'd switch over to hydrogen production using high temperature electrolysis.

Finally, there are also plans for personal hydrogen pumps. These units would be installed in a persons home, and would draw power for the electrolysis by solar panels, the power grid, or a combination of both. posted 06/16/2008 at 12:44:43

Quiet Speculation Begins About Who Will Replace Russert

I'd have to agree. David Gregory has the experience dealing with all the politicians all the way up to the President. He's never been one to not go after someone with a question. And I honestly can't tell who he favors, it feels like he favors McCain slightly and has a bit of dislike for Obama, but its not really clear.

I think Chuck Todd would be great for taking on the MSNBC, Today, and Nightly duties, but I'm not sure on Bureau Chief. He's only been at MSNBC for 15 months or so.

I have a feeling they'll split it into 3 positions. With a more managerial role for the Bureau Chief, someone like Brokaw that has the experience but would play a more behind the scenes roll coordinating the stories, with the occasional appearance on voting nights or big stories. posted 06/16/2008 at 10:19:04

Obama's Father's Day Speech Urges Black Fathers To Be More Engaged In Raising Their Children

Your argument is flawed. Because the actions of girls in these "relationships", good or bad, in no way abdicates the boys from their responsibilities to that child. A welfare system, good or bad, in no way abdicates the boys from their responsibilities to that child. The fact that girls give birth to the child and not the boys, in no way abdicates the boys from their responsibilities to that child.

It's called personal responsibility. They are both, boy and girl, women and men, responsible for that child. The intentions of the girl, state, or federal government in no way abdicates the boys from their responsibilities to that child.

The problem with your argument is that you excuse those boys from any responsibility towards that child. The problem with your argument is that no where did you ever support your pathetic attempt to smear him with the "misogynist" label. Where did he ever say anything that was misogynistic? Do you even understand the word? It means hatred of women. This speech was far from anything close to showing hatred for women.

And despite what you may think, not all single mothers are black teenagers living on welfare. And not all deadbeat fathers are black teenage boys who were duped into giving some teen girl a baby so she could get a check. posted 06/16/2008 at 07:51:15

Great work Keith!

We need more people like him willing to speak the truth, even if it's controversial to some. Surprisingly, we used to have someone that did that here in Cincinnati... Jerry Springer. Don't laugh, but when he was an anchor for the local NBC station he regularly had closing comments that provoked thought and discussion. Never quite like Keith's, but still made you think. But from what I have read, around $150K you'll pay the same under his plan as you have been. It's those that are $200k and up that will start to pay a lot more. posted 06/12/2008 at 14:37:56
Still doesn't change facts.

If McCain wants to cut taxes... fine. Cut spending. And not this whining about earmarks. That's a tiny drop in the bucket.

Lets start cutting spending on all these contractors. Conservatives whine about wanting smaller government, when all they really want is for their private companies to do the work instead. How many hundreds of billions are going to Haliburton, KBR, Blackwater, and the hundreds of contract companies doing work for the state dept, pentagon, etc.

McLame wants to cut taxes... fine. Cut the spending to Haliburton, KBR, Blackwater, etc. FIRST. Then you can take all that money saved and use it for tax cuts... or paying down the $9 trillion in debt this country owes. posted 06/12/2008 at 14:20:48
Doesn't change the facts that Reaganomics has ballooned the national debt so that they could benefit the rich. Before Reagan took office the national debt had slowly decreased from a high during WWII (based on %GDP). During the 12 years of Reagan/Bush the national debt grew dramatically, from $930.2 Billion in 1980 to ~$3.5 Trillion in 1992 (26% GDP to ~50% GDP)

During the Clinton era the debt dropped down to 35% GDP, and had a budget surplus to pay it down more each year.

GWB... blew it all... and has us hitting $9 Trillion in debt, about 39% GDP. This isn't counting the est. $3 Trillion in bills we'll have to pay to care for the returning soldiers and replacement of equipment.

McCain would make it even worse, in a Reagan style tax cut for the rich, driving the debt to insane levels. posted 06/12/2008 at 14:16:24

Katie Couric Is Rubber And Keith Olbermann Is Glue

Have you even paid much attention in the last few months? He HAS had to confront the racist equivalent, and more. So did his supporters and organizers. The difference was he didn't go whining and crying about it, or complaining that the media was unfair.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/05/12/AR2008051203014_pf.html

"For all the hope and excitement Obama's candidacy is generating, some of his field workers, phone-bank volunteers and campaign surrogates are encountering a raw racism and hostility that have gone largely unnoticed -- and unreported -- this election season."

"One caller, Switzer remembers, said he couldn't possibly vote for Obama and concluded: "Hang that darky from a tree!"

The bigotry has gone beyond words. In Vincennes, the Obama campaign office was vandalized at 2 a.m. on the eve of the primary, according to police. A large plate-glass window was smashed, an American flag stolen. Other windows were spray-painted with references to Obama's controversial former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, and other political messages: "Hamas votes BHO" and "We don't cling to guns or religion. Goddamn Wright."

"I thought, this is a big deal." But he was told Obama campaign officials didn't want to make a big deal of the incident.

Later, there would be bomb threats to three Obama campaign offices in Indiana, including the one in Vincennes, according to campaign sources. posted 06/12/2008 at 13:17:23

A Warning to My Old Republican Friends: Screw Up The Obama Moment and You're History -- Literally

You proved my point. Typical response from a Republican lately... attack the person instead of talking about the issue.

You can believe whatever you want. I've no reason to lie. I've also no reason to question your honesty and integrity even though I completely disagree with your opinion. Promising something and not being able to deliver is not lying.

First, I never said there weren't good people on the Republican side, in fact I listed a few of them. I could list a lot more. But the fact is, that in *my opinion*, the vocal majority of Republican talking heads are lying, disingenuous slimeballs.

I don't agree with a good bit of Obama's proposals, specifically in the area of tax on businesses. The rate of taxation on businesses in America is what is driving companies overseas. It's what is hurting a lot of states as well, as companies move to other states with lower rates. I wish Obama would talk more about cutting spending. Lets get rid of the billions wasted in the pentagon, state dept, and other agencies because they are so big and mismanaged that no one knows where the money is going.

So, think whatever you want. I don't care. posted 06/13/2008 at 09:32:59
As a former Republican myself, I agree with Frank completely. One of the biggest things that moved me over to being a Democrat is the constant lies and dishonesty I see from nearly every Republican elected official or talking head. Spin is one thing, but the lies and complete disingenuousness and half truths coming from the Republican party has completely turned me off.

Unfortunately I think Frank's warning won't help. Last night on Verdict with Dan Abrams, Pat Buchanon and that slime Blakeman pretty much said that the Republicans were going to go heavily negative, throwing every bit of slime they could. The shouting match between those two and the two democratic strategists ended up pointing out exactly why I changed to Democrat. The one Democratic strategist stated "Fine, you run your slime campaign, we'll continue to talk about real issues". Blakeman's response was "we will" and had that shit filled slimey smile on his face that so many repukes have now.

I can't stand to listen to hardly any of them anymore. Other than a few like Michael Smerconish, Kevin Madden, and Ed Rollins, the rest are just slime. They constantly have to interrupt everyone else, shout them down, and flat out lie and distort everything. posted 06/13/2008 at 08:44:50
I agree. I forsee that within the next 2-3 elections that the Republican party will start losing seats to Libertarians and within the next 20 years, the Libertarian party could very well push the Republican party the way of the Whigs. posted 06/13/2008 at 08:37:56
