Albert Hofmann, father of drug LSD, dies in Switzerland

Minor correction. The article says Hofmann "discovered lysergic acid diethylamide-25 in 1938". He discovered lysergic acid diethylamide in 1938, but it wasn't 25. I don't know when the isomers were first numbered, but the versions in use in the 1950s and early 1960s were 17 and 19. Sometime in the 1960s the water soluble isomers LSD-23, LSD-25, and LSD-27 (generally all referred to as LSD-25) were developed. posted 04/30/2008 at 12:39:33

Why the Democrats Should Use the "Defeat" Word

In Viet Nam, Nixon arranged for defeat with honor. We pulled out on the condition that the Commies not take over South Viet Nam for two years (a decent interval). The problem in Iraq is there is no one with the authority to cut such a deal. We can't get a decent interval, all we can do is get out as fast as possibly. posted 03/21/2008 at 18:13:22
