Afghanistan Draws Foreign Al-Qaida Recruits

ChiGuy, I'm not sure whether you're agreeing with me or rebutting.

I'm absolutely for following the rule of law, all of it.

If those enemy combatants that are captured fulfill the requirements of the Geneva convention, all of them, then by all means they should be held in compliance with it, but if they don't, then bollocks to them.

Bollocks I say. posted 07/18/2008 at 16:51:17
That'd be great. Now, how to get 2/3 of the world's population to stop believing in centuries old tribal primitives and invisible beings that command them to impose their beliefs on the rest of us.

"Imagine no religion, it's easy if you try" It's beautiful, but then there's reality.

Ok, let's suppose a hypothetical where that actually happens.

Now, what about the military industrial complex? Yeah...great......

And the list goes on. posted 07/18/2008 at 12:58:37

My Brother Was Killed on 9/11 with Republicans and Democrats

Unlike others here who may hurl epithets, I won't, because I want you to actually read what I have to say.

The war is a real one, but it is currently being fought in a way that will not produce the results we (meaning we the American People, not the Govt) are after, if those goals are actually security and safety in our homeland. General Petraeus said this in his brilliant (and now classified) whitepaper on counter-insurgency action in the middle east, written a year prior to being put in charge.

It is a war of ideology, and you can't defeat an extremist ideology with guns and bombs. Fighting an overt, assymetrical conventional war against an extremist ideology (especially a one with an irrational religious aspect to it) only grows the fire of extremism and assures that the fighting will go on ad infinitum. Seeing that you voted for W, I'll explain, ad infinitum means "without end".

The only way to succeed in this battle is with a campaign of agressive engagement with those who can, as the author said above, marginalize and weaken those who purvey that extremism, combined with expanded and pinpoint covert operations.

Otherwise, it's like pouring water on Gremilns. posted 07/17/2008 at 15:00:58

Obviously, Obama's marketing people are doing their job. There is no better way to spend an advertising dollar than on NASCAR. It's been verified through countless independent studies conducted by marketing firms, it's verifiable and quantifiable.

As an amateur racer (one big-time Pro race under my belt doesn't mean I can call myself a pro), I have at times got the urge to do it for a living and gone through the research. It's out there, but you have to pay for the information. The numbers on ROI in NASCAR sponsorship are stunning.

There's a reason that FedEx, Coca-Cola, UPS, Sony, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Budweiser, Coors, 3M, DuPont, M&Ms, MinuteMaid and other corporate heavyweights put their dollar into NASCAR. It's called Return On Investment. If there wasn't a strong profit to be made, they wouldn't touch it.

Cheers to Obama's people for thinking outside the political box. Might be a good way to reach those voters who might not have even considered him as a possibility. posted 07/11/2008 at 16:48:25

I'm not sure how you're lining up the jailing of a US citizen (he is a citizen, just like the rest of us, right?) for contempt of congress with the ridiculous "fairness doctrine" for media, but if you want to make it just about what is "fair" then I'll put it to you like this: If I get a subpoena from The United States Congress, demanding I show up and give testimony, then I'd better show up by gum, if not then I'd expect to be arrested and put in jail for contempt. How is Rove's subpoena different from mine? It isn't. It's the same. Unless of course, he's some kind of new "super-citizen" to which the laws of our nation do not apply, or a member of the royal family, oh wait we have no royal family, that's right. Is there a new "super-citizen" designation none of us are aware of?

And the Hugo comment? Are you actually saying that the righteous call to enforce the laws of The United States of America is to be likened to the rantings of a socialist dictator? HUH?!

In all sincerity, you obviously consider yourself a patriot, and as such, you (maybe more than any of us) should disgusted and angered with the contempt, disrespect and criminal disregard which Karl Rove has shown for our Constitution and body of Law.

Me too. I've been commuting on my motorcycle, 20 miles each way, for the past 3 years. In the morning, I load the kids into the SUV, drop 'em off at daycare which is 1/2 mile away and then go back to the house for my bike. Nothing like a nice ride after a long days work to clear your mind. Also, it has saved me so much $$$ in gas I've been able to build a recording studio behind my house on the savings.

You gotta be hardcore about it though, especially when you live in Western Washington State like I do. I only ditch the bike when it's either raining cats and dogs or icy, and then my wife and I car-pool in her smaller car.

Since gas went to $4 I've actually been saving more $$$ and have more time, which is wierd. The cost of fuel is about $4.38 for reg now and so many people have gone to car/vanpools or metro that traffic has actually improved to the point where I'm SURPRISED if I'm not going full speed. Funny, I missed the part in my post where I talked of inflicting misery on anyone. Checking again...yep, still not there. And when have I EVER said attacking Iran should even be considered? Again...yep, still not there. It shouldn't even have to be a topic of discussion.

Still, I find it peculiar that the same group of people who won't believe a word out of our current administration's collective mouth (and with good reason) will take everything the equally crazy and oppressive Iranian adminstration says at face value. The "logic" of this befuddles my mind.

I'm an equal opportunity "mis-truster". If a government, any government plays by the rules of "plausible deniability", then

Where's The Line? Fox Shows Footage of Dead Supermodel

Zoey, personally I DO agree with you about showing it. They should have the taste not to, it's horrible, but as Americans it can never be our place to take the right to show it, away. The only thing we can do is excercise our CHOICE, change the channel (why was it on FAUX to begin with?) then write a letter to FAUX, excercising OUR first amendment rights, denouncing their lack of taste and ghoulish judgment.

As a parent of two unbelievably beautiful and sweet children, I'm horrified by the coverage of child abuse and death on local and national news programs. One story of a mother putting her baby in a microwave, that happened over a year ago still haunts me. Writing about it, even now, makes my eyes well up and my stomach contract like I'm going to throw up. I thought about suing the local stations here for covering it(it happened in the midwest somewhere, I live in the northwest) as there was no reason that it should be news here and it has caused me measureable mental anguish, but when I talked to a good lawyer about it, she told me that it wasn't even worth arguing, the first amendment protects the right for them to broadcast whatever they see fit.

Either you have freedom to express yourself or you do not, there is no middle ground. The first time a government censor decides what is fit to broadcast, that freedom becomes an illusion. posted 06/30/2008 at 19:53:36
"Iraqi and US soldiers being fired upon by sniper demonstrates the danger our soldiers are in." Even if the person who posted these videos intends them as propoganda to be used in the recruitment and radicalization of more snipers? Or as celebration of a violent death? We are not the intended audience. We do not need demonstrations of proof of danger to our soldiers, the body count is well known and speaks volumes.

"Religious fanatic video shows the root of extremism." - Interesting. Do you actually believe videos of such are intended as an illustration to us that extremism exists? If so it would be posted by someone whom you would never listen to - like Robert Spencer or Geert Wilders. Instead they are posted by extremists in the hope of recruiting more extremists and furthering their cause.

"Pretty model lying dead points out nothing we need to see." - Really? Who is this WE you intend to define, and who are you to decide? What if is used to illustrate that fame achieved by physical beauty is superficial and obviously unfulfilling? Does it then, not have some constructive use?

Video of truck driver having his head sawn off with a kitchen knife - OK
Video of religious fanatic preaching hatred and violence based on racial, cultural and religious lines - OK
Video of dead body of young, beautiful girl laying on sidewalk - NOT OK.

Ok, don't like what the Democrat Lion LBJ had to say about the politics of fear, how about the Republican Lion Eisenhower who said:

"Down the long lane of the history yet to be written America knows that this world of ours, ever growing smaller, must avoid becoming a community of dreadful fear and hate, and be instead, a proud confederation of mutual trust and respect.

Such a confederation must be one of equals. The weakest must come to the conference table with the same confidence as do we, protected as we are by our moral, economic, and military strength. That table, though scarred by many past frustrations, cannot be abandoned for the certain agony of the battlefield. "

He also said, in the same speech:

"Throughout America's adventure in free government, our basic purposes have been to keep the peace; to foster progress in human achievement, and to enhance liberty, dignity and integrity among people and among nations... Any failure traceable to arrogance, or our lack of comprehension or readiness to sacrifice would inflict upon us grievous hurt both at home and abroad."

-CAIR Co-founder Ibrahim Hooper once told a reporter "I wouldn't want to create the impression that I wouldn't like the government of the United States to be Islamic sometime in the future." In 2003 Hooper stated that if Muslims ever become a majority in the United States, they will likely seek to replace the U.S. Constitution with Islamic law, which they deem superior to man-made law.

-CAIR Board Member and speaker Siraj Wahhaj has said ""If only Muslims were clever politically, they could take over the United States and replace its constitutional government with a caliphate."

Every single thing listed here is verifiable by anyone with a computer, and not one thing is an invention, every single item was said or committed by those at the top of CAIR, who claims to be the voice of the moderate.

Blaming others
By Farooq Sulehria

"One can mention from the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait to the recent Hamas-Fatah infighting. The list is long. Indeed, unending. However, the solution to all our problems is always simple: return to an imagined past which, mercifully for the people of the seventh century, never existed. Every time, a scientist in the West is ready with an invention, our readymade answer is: we knew about it 1,400 years ago what the West has found only now. We kill Theo van Gogh when confronted with a film. We burn down our own cities in response to a blasphemous and racist caricature. Still, we refuse to understand that our answer to every "provocation" is either a fatwa or mindless violence " perhaps because creativity is anathema to us. Not because we lack fertile minds, but because we lack liberation and freedom -- liberation from self-imposed mental, moral, and cultural censors. And freedom to think and express.

Heed the great Syrian poet Nizar Qabbani, who said:

Five thousand years

Growing beards

In our caves.

Our currency is unknown,

Our eyes are a haven for flies.

Friends,

Smash the doors,

Wash your brains,

Wash your clothes.

Friends,

Read a book,

Write a book,

Grow words, pomegranates and grapes,

Sail to the country of fog and snow.

Nobody knows you exist in caves.

People take you for a breed of mongrels."

While I wholeheartedly agree that America has done itself more harm than good regarding it's perception of Islam and in the assessment of the shameful campaign of fearmongering by this administration and the political right, I am taken aback at your lack of acknowledgment of the responsibility Islam holds for the development of and contribution to that perception, and the responsibility it refuses to accept in stemming those actions worldwide that reinforce that negative perception.

Although it has been manipulated by the right, the "set in stone" mandate of separation of church and state is just that, a mandate. By law It's not Obama's place to address it. It belongs only in the hands of the religion itself, and right now the only group standing up to represent Islam in America is CAIR. Even you would admit, they are not helping. Those moderates you talk of need to rise up and seize hold of the reigns, only they can change it.

That being said, do I wander down the primrose path with acceptance and trust that Iran and Brazil are of the same like-minded and honest intent in regards to their nuclear ambition?
No. I don't trust our insane Administration, why should I trust their equally insane Adminsitration?

The first large difference I see between Iran and Brazil, is that one, Brazil is a secular Federation that owes no allegiance to invisible beings, and holds no belief that there is a magical person that has been hidden away in a cave for a thousand years awaiting the opportunity to return and convert the world into a religiously hegemonic paradise.

And so Iran's President's words about "wiping Israel off the map" have been distorted. What about those words unreported by the western media?

Ahmadinejad further promised to place Iran's nuclear technology "at the service of those who are determined to confront the bullying powers and aggressors [i.e., the Western countries, headed by the U.S.]..." -IRNA (Iran), August 21, 2007.

Once again it's obvious. Time to FLUSH, twice. posted 06/11/2008 at 13:42:43

Gay Muslims Make a Familiar Point

Belief and faith in a god is a choice made by the human who chooses to believe. (I know...duh) If the concept, liturgy, scripture and belief structure of the god that a person chooses, rejects that persons being as they were created, then trying to justify the belief in that god is a excercise in futility and humiliation.

If your lifestyle doesn't jibe with your god's precepts, find another god, there are plenty around last I heard.

Better yet, jettison the whole notion of a god who will punish you for being what they supposedly created, and live your life in freedom. posted 06/05/2008 at 16:34:58

Olympics in Qatar 2016

mamcat-

While I agree with, partly at least, your conclusion that such an attempt to have the olympics in Qatar will be met with resistance from those on the right, I have to take issue with your dismissing of what happened with the Dunkin Donuts commercial so offhandedly. Do I believe that the producers of said commerical were trying to make a statement? No. Do I believe that an oversight in production management happened that inserted a POWERFUL symbol of endorsement unintentionally in an innapropriate place? Absolutely. They were right to pull the commercial, not because of the cries from the right wing, simply because that symbol didn't belong in an ad for Dunkin Donuts, unless it was a Dunkin on the Gaza Strip, in Damascus, or in Beiruit.

Symbols, and the use of them are of critical importance today, to countless different creeds of people around the world, none can be labeled as more important or less powerful than others, because of the people and ideologies they represent.

I am an American of Syrian descent. I own a keffiyah, much like the one Ms. Ray was wearing in that commercial. It's a family heirloom and in the traditional black and white pattern that is so recognizeable. But I stopped wearing it a long time ago because of the endorsement that it has come to represent, and only my FULL understanding of what it meant and the powerful nature of it as a symbol allowed me to make that decision. posted 06/05/2008 at 13:52:04

Being Gracious in a Sexist World

Ms. Jong, I urge you to take your own advice. You want sexism to end? Stop practicing it.

I put my mark down for Obama at our caucses not because he was black, nor because he was a he, but simply because of Hillary's votes both for the war and for the Kyl/Lieberman Amendment (which WILL ALLOW our criminal Pres and VP to attack Iran without a formal declaration of war or approval from Congress) were tantamount to having George W Bush sitting in her seat at the time of both extremely critical votes.

Her record was my only concern. The fact that she adopted the political playbook of Karl Rove for the execution of her campaign, only solidified my belief that I had made the right choice. posted 06/05/2008 at 14:21:14

British Sex Scandal: The Obvious Hillary Connection

Actually the story came out March 31st (in the UK) and sadly is no joke.

I am also an avid (some say rabid) F1 fan, so to me this wasn't surprising at all since Mosleys' a nazi wanker anyway. In fact, it makes Elliot Spitzer look like a celibate social worker who looks after abandoned puppies and kittens in his spare time.

Agreed though, leave out the irrelevant connections to US politicians, that's just desperate grasping. posted 04/02/2008 at 15:42:55

Reuters: "Somebody Forgot To Tell Hillary Clinton The Democratic Presidential Race Is Over And Barack Obama Won"

I wasn't aware that the Obama campaign was in charge of the Democratic Party of Michigan.

Stop blaming it on Obama. Michigan's own Democratic leadership made the choice to ignore the rules that were laid out a year and a half in advance and agreed to by all parties. They ignored the rules, they ignored the warning of the consequences. They are to blame, take it up with them.

Same goes for Florida. posted 03/27/2008 at 18:49:34

REM will always rock. Even when they refuse to. I hated them until a friend made me go see them on their GREEn tour, after that, big fan. I even hit on Peter Buck's wife one time (didn't know) at her club just for good measure.

As for the radio stations that will play the new album, well...

I just heard "Man Sized Wreath" on the radio, where you ask?

In Seattle that's 90.3fm
in New York City 91.5fm Radio Liberation

Or streaming on the web 24/7

The Democratization of the Music Industry

I was just explaining the realities of this to my wife the other night. I could not be more pleased with the direction that the music business is going due to exactly that the author has penned here.

It is not perfect, but it is opportunity that anyone can grasp at, the proof of success or not, will be in those artists we both find from this expanded media and for the small portion who have the chops, the ones we become.

Neil Young has called the dawn of the digital music age "The dark ages of music" but I disagree. This likens more to Martin Luther nailing his thesis' to the door of the Church, taking to task the hold that the clergy maintained on their position as intercessary to a higher power, and putting the connection in the hands of the people.

Now I'm going home to put up sheetrock in my new studio. See you on iTunes posted 03/25/2008 at 17:48:51

Whoops! Skeet Ulrich "Jericho" Promotion Airs Days After Cancellation

Yep, more reality crap. I have enough reality...actual real reality, not reality dreamed up by ridiculous network suits trying to pad their bottom line.

Start sending snail mail postcards to Sci-Fi. I hear that they are thinking about picking Jericho up. There's lot's of sites that'll give you the info on how to do it.

RANGERS SADDLE UP!! posted 03/27/2008 at 18:56:27
the lack of comments to this story, admittedly about something as unimportant as a TV show, is ironic. And I would say, just a little bit humourous.

I will admit to being one of the Jericho faithful, that when our good town got it's ass cancelled, raised our fists to the starry night sky that is the television production hierarchy and and cried NUTS! I hope Ms. Tassler enjoyed my 5lbs of peanuts along with the other 50,000. (I know, they went to the troops and homeless)

Upon coming back, I never believed the show would make it, although the changing of the promo script from "Jericho Finale" to "Jericho Season Finale" had made me hopeful. At least this time they've promised not to leave us hanging.

6.8 million viewers average sounds like a good number for the Sci-Fi channel though. CBS stated one of the reasons for cancellation was sky-high production costs. For what? It's obviously shot outside LA on the same lots as "Dukes of Hazzard" MASH and countless others, special effects have been whittled away to nothing, Gerald McRaney left, seems the biggest expense would have been in military uniforms and equipment, which again have been cut back . What, CBS can't afford the five Humvees and three civi Hummers that have appeared? (Ok there was the one helicopter sequence) Those are already in their stocks. Maybe they could act it out with sock puppets? You wouldn't have to pay them b-list scale. posted 03/25/2008 at 19:12:03

This Good Friday Let Us Not Crucify Barack Obama

Amen Frank. Sadly however, I feel we have past the point where the American people can make that choice. Unless something miraculous happens, I'm preparing myself for a continuation of the same. Last time I was shocked, this time I'm merely resigned to the weather the course that the ignorant and fear--driven will chart for us.

You know who writes that? A man, brave, intelligent and honest enough to step from his father's historically formidable shadow and declare "bullshit" when it finally comes together that in fact, the "great work" that he has been involved with, really wasn't great at all, but rather a manipulation to fill coffers and further an corrupted, ignorant and divisive agenda. Which sadly is what has happened to most organized religion. It is about control of the masses, power and greed.

My father was an evangelical minister and came to this realization. He was unable to continue, or hold his tongue about it to the church hierarchy. To this day, he is considered somewhat of a "heretic" by those groups. His faith on God didn't change, more precisely, his faith in man was confirmed to be accurate.
