Wachovia Loses $8.9B, 6,350 Jobs

October 1982
Reagan deregulates the US S&L industry
October: Reagan signs a bill deregulating the thrift and savings & loan industries, and quips, "All in all, I think we've hit the jackpot." Instead of promoting new economic growth and investments, the legislation will open the door for the collapse of the savings and loan industry, costing the American taxpayer up to a trillion dollars. The unregulated looting of the S&Ls that will follow leads to the speculative junk bond run on the stock market, which will conclude in dozens of criminal convictions of Wall Street speculators and a national recession. But, thanks to the timely intervention of President George H.W. Bush during his term, a number of heavy financial hitters will "earn" tremendous "profits" because of the S&L bust, profits paid for by the US taxpayer. (FDIC, Joe Conason)

Everybody gets it wrong!!

There are a variety of versions concerning the circumstances under which Marie Antoinette supposedly first said these words (ranging from peasants coming to the gates of Versailles begging for food to her driving through Paris and seeing the condition of the peasants on her own). However, the quote actually comes from the philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau, who commented over twenty years before Marie Antoinette's birth that a "certain princess" said it, the supposed princess being Louis XIV's queen, Maria Theresa of Spain. Maria Theresa's quote was, "S'il ait aucun pain, donnez-leur la croÃ"te au loin du pâté", which roughly translates to, "If there be no bread, give them the crust off of the pâté". Though this claim concerning the Spanish princess is also backed up by the comte de Provence, it is unknown if she, or any other French queen, actually ever said it.[108] posted 07/02/2008 at 00:29:39

This surprises me.

If you have any Greek, Latin or Spanish
you can handle Dante with help.

It is not that hard and the more work you put in, the easier it becomes.
You will get 'the music' fairly quickly if you stick to it.

Took high school French to read Camus.
Took Greek to read Homer. More than amazing in the original. Profound really.
Shakespeare in German is great as many great German poets cut their teeth on the task.

It is not that hard. Americans are just afraid of foreign languages.

And, no, despite Richard Wilbur's amazing prowess at translating,
poetry cannot be translated. That should be obvious to anyone
who has a clue what poetry is. You simply cannot translate the music
and without the music, it is not poetry anymore. posted 07/01/2008 at 00:40:36

And please tell us who would destroy the planet?

When did Israel try? Please remind us. Yet daily we hear the Muslim
threats to destroy America, The West and Israel.

So, who is the threat and who will be the first one to push the button?
It will be a Muslim fanatic. And then that country will be turned into glass.

Russia??? Since America will be providing missile shields to former Soviet puppets,
Putin will soon be afraid to appear in public.

Ukraine, etc. do not like Russia. They will get in bed with America.

Joke is on Vlad. posted 06/24/2008 at 23:35:02
As vapid as all those vapid cliches she spit out for her Ronnie.

An administration of lies and ignorant nostalgia for an America that
never existed anyway.
Like Raygun at the liberation of death camps.

The current problems with the American/world economy can be laid
at the dead feet of Ron Raygun, the man who turned America into a debtor
nation in 1986. Mr Deregulation. Mr. Pay the Bill Later.

And Noonan, far from winning a freaking Pulitzer Prize should still be in prison.

Do people not remember the incredible spin the White House would spit daily
as death squads did their business throughout Central America?

Does anyone remember how bad it really was? posted 06/24/2008 at 23:29:44

American Indian Slam Poets

PC problem in America:

ethnicity does not make you a poet.

America seems to think that if you have an ethnic heritage, especially Hispanic or Native American, then you are automatically a poet.

This is killing American poetry.
And denigrating the traditions of indigenous people.

"Poetry" is the creation of white Europeans who at some point became estranged from their tribal arts.

There are no Indian poets. There is no difference. Poetry slams are a product of American
pop culture ---- Ginsberg rocking through "Howl" for example--- and does not have anything to do with poetry.

Tribal sings. Pow wows. Sweats. Sure. But poetry slams?? Please. posted 06/24/2008 at 01:13:54

DNC: Investigate McCain For Election Law Violations

A waste of time.

Let the campaign do its work.

Let the reporters dig up McCain's past as the campaign unravels.

There is dirt, acres and acres of dirt on what he has done in Arizona. Start there.

You won't even need to mention his wife's mobbed up bunch and her bootlegging
family.

McCain makes Bush look like Doogie Houser. posted 06/18/2008 at 00:49:39

America's Prison For Terrorists Often Held The Wrong Men

Something anyone with two brain cells working

knew

was going to happen.

Given the Patriot Act, the ignorant corruption of this administration,
this is exactly what was going to happen.

We can bitch about it and all aspects of Bushco
or we can hope some international court somewhere has the balls
to detain some of them next time they venture out of America.

Like Pinochet.

We've talked enough. It is time to punish.
The crimes are obvious and known to all.

Mexico's Cheap Gas Draws American Drivers

Mexico: Pemex Oozes Corruption
By Diego Cevallos
MEXICO CITY

"Pemex is a can of worms. If you do something right, they come after you; if you shut up about some irregularity, they reward you; and if you take part in the corruption, you profit," a Pemex worker told IPS.

"I"m not saying everything is like that -- there are also honest people," added the worker, whose name is withheld for his safety.

The employee said that after he replaced several worn-out parts of a gas valve, a group of internal auditors criticised his work, saying they had found "too many foreign parts," and ordered him to put the originals back in place.

He said that when his boss protested, he was accused of a bias in favour of a private supplier and an investigation against him was launched.

The 70-year-old Pemex, the biggest company in Latin America, which employs 154,761 people, 125,523 of whom belong to the powerful oil workers union, is facing severe financial difficulties and is in dire need of upgrading its technology infrastructure. Moreover, Mexico"s proven oil reserves are expected to run out in nine years.

Billions of dollars are lost to corruption which, according to observers, is deeply rooted in an opaque administration choked with red tape, and in political and economic vested interests. posted 06/15/2008 at 19:37:29
Get it while you can.

Pemex bleeds millions a year due to corruption and inefficiency.

Among the worst in the world.

Mexico is not the answer either. posted 06/15/2008 at 17:56:35

China Increases Its Lead As The World's Biggest Polluter

You have no idea how many people are in prison in China and neither does the rest of the world. How many in Burma? Cuba? Russia? No one knows.

I would suggest there are many, many more Chinese in prison
than Americans where on any given day 30% just may be from another country and here illegally. Details, details. posted 06/16/2008 at 01:03:34
Wow. Touch a nerve?

It's not about evil. The Chinese are supposed to be turning America into a third world coutry.
Of course, after they rebuild after the earthquake, clean their air and water, pull off the Olympics
and feed themselves. No problem.

And they are so intelligent. All those Asians in America with those SAT 800s in math.

So, dear learner of English, are the Chinese really, really the smartest people in the world.

Media Under Intense Scrutiny During Campaign

Bingo. We don't have reporters anymore. We have rock stars.

Every single profession in America has been tainted by the advent of television.

Judges, doctors, lawyers, reality TV, reporters with multi-million dollar book deals.

Dr. Phil, Judge Judy. Anchors making millions to "read" the news in that special way.
