Here We Go Again

Thanks, Jane. You reflect my thoughts 100%. I excused Hillary far too long: she was tired, getting bad advice from everyone: Mark Penn, her husband (for whom I voted twice enthusiastically). Having come from "working families" (steel mills on the Ohio River on the Ohio side near Weirton and Wheeling, West Virginia, the coal mines in West Virginia), I know about desperation and bitterness when jobs disappear. My father's side, particularly reflected exactly what Barack spoke about : recent immigrants from Eastern Europe competing with numerous other ethnic groups for jobs. Some groups didn't have much love for each other, based on color and/or religion. People clung to their churches, still do, for comfort. Found it hard to see "others" as anything but people who would take "their" jobs. The Depressions stories I heard as a child were often bitter. FDR's messages were the one thing everyone seemed to agree on. His messages weren't all rosy, but he recognized the truth: people were hurting; willing to stand in line for hours, roll up their sleeves and work for what few hours of work they could get.. Baba, my Russian grandmother, was widowed by a mill accident 3 months before my Dad's birth-already had a two year old. She tended a huge veggie garden, raised pigs and chickens, canned and smoked everyhting she could, including the gallons of berries Dido (grandpa) picked in the woods when he wasn't at the mill. Compare Hillary's childhood to Barack's. to Hillary's. "nuff said. posted 04/12/2008 at 16:24:58

Obama 'Small Town' Comments Draw Fire, Support

Hey folks! I'm a pretty well educated person, but that's not the point. Being bitter and having someone recognize your bitterness, and the reasons for it, has NOTHING to do with condescension or elitism. The point is that when things start really going south for you and you don't feel as though you have any control over what's happening to you, and you know damn well that it's not your fault because you've done everything "right": worked hard, paid the bills, brought up your kids to be good people, been nice to your neighbors and all the rest, but you are still getting squashed, you'd not be human if you didn't start looking around, at least once in a while, to find someone to blame, or something to cling to that makes you feel better. Some folks come home and kick the dog when the boss yells at them. Others might view that dog as their only real friend. Barack understands that getting kicked in the teeth for no good reason is without excuse, and that there is nothing wrong with being just a wee bit pissed about it. It happens to us all, but lately it's been happening to a lot more of us. posted 04/12/2008 at 00:30:50

I'm a child of the '60's, too. The explanation is not hard to grasp. There is no draft, no direct effect on the vast majority of the American people, except now that we're having a bit of a recession, maybe everyone will start putting 2+2 together. G-D! We can't even see the flag-draped coffins arriving home in the middle of the night at Dover! The press does not keep us up on how many of our people have died , been injured or how badly, very well at all. Did you see the poll on that awhile back, just before we hit the 4000 mark? Apparently it doesn't attract advertising. Car chases in L.A., or anywhere, are lots more fun! Our "President" doesn't go to the funerals of those dead. He only cries when he is honoring a dead, and invisible, hero now and then. People thought Cindy Sheehan was a nut case, thanks to whom? Yes, we are sedated, a lot of us anyway. We live from scandal to scandal; doesn't much matter though, unless it involves someone's sexual peccadilloes, but it's lots better if it involves some person famous for being famous goes, or doesn't go, into re-hab. Scary! And really depressing. posted 04/11/2008 at 15:28:44

I don't envy that person one bit (except John McCain might just bumble his way obliviously through the whoe thing and leave it up to Lord knows who to make the hard decisions) More than ever we need a strong Congress, regardless of who you favor for President. He/she is going to need all the help he/she can get. Obama's Dukakis Moment: Bowling Blunders Matter

I got a kick out of Obama on Ellen, too. It's no worse than the candidates showing up on SNL. You've got a point,up to a point. James Carville and Mary Matalin are one of the most fascinating couples around. Their book about their early romance, campaigning from opposite sides of the "aisle" is great. But there was no money involved from which they would both benefit big-time. New Book: McCain Once Physically Attacked Fellow Congressman

God, I'd love to hear her story about being married to Flyboy John after he came back from Vietnam as opposed to before. You are right. You never hear about her. Look, McCain went through an unimaginable 51/5 years, and for that and his refusal to be released just because he was an admiral's son, he was truly heroic. But I never have heard whether he received any psychiatric evaluation or treatment afterward. These days, I think it would go without saying that AT LEAST an evaluation was in order. I have often wondered how the 25th Amendment could be brought to bear if a president were mentally incapacitated without it looking like a coup. Nixon was a drunk. We don't really know about a couple of others I can think of, except to speculate. Is there any way a mental evaluation could be incorporated into their physicals without it coming across as a political thing? posted 04/08/2008 at 14:18:42
If I had been in Cindy's place, even in private, he'd have seen my back receding so quickly into the distance, he would not have had chance at another word to me. I'd have been packing suitcases with one hand and calling a cab and a hotel with the other, with HIS credit card in hand. The next time he saw me would have been in a marriage counselor's office or divorce court, his choice, and going to to anger management counseling as well. Verbal abuse, especially in public, is inexcusable. In my experience, it doesn't stop there. A lot of make-up often sometimes covers up more than bad skin. I'm not making any assumptions, just an observation. posted 04/08/2008 at 13:57:56

No way to start the day. Please , folks, look up http://responsibleplan.com/plan. It has not been something that has gotten much play on the MSM (though before getting to this post I think I saw in another article on the Huff Post and need to go back to). You can read it-it's not long-and sign on. About 50 candidates for Congress have already signed on, including my candidate for House of Reps. Then call your candidate and ask him/her to sign on if they haven't already. When I get through here, I'll check to see if my Senatorial candidate has signed on, and if not, I'll get in touch to find out why not (he is my present Rep in the House). posted 04/08/2008 at 13:21:45

The Biofuel Boom

I heard a discusion last night which included info on the dramatic increase in poulation. For most of Humanity's (as we would recognize it) history of about 163,000 years, the population held pretty steady at around 250 million. In Jfk's time, we were up to 3 billion. Now we are approaching 7 billion. Popoulation really began it's huge increase when we started using fossil fuels. So, first we've got to get a handle on population. That would seem to be a no brainer. Then we have to seriously develop enrgy sources that are not just renewable, whether it's switch grass, sugar cane or corn. I'm referring to things that are always there, that we can't use up, ever. That would be wind, solar, tidal, geothermal. Conservation will be necessary in the meantime and that's a fact. Otherwise, our long term outlook may not be so long term, let alone, good. It'll hurt, but extinction of "civilization", if not us, is the only alternative, by global warming and starvation, wars over what resources there are, consequences we cannot yet imagine. posted 04/04/2008 at 19:02:42

McCain Rejects Secret Service Protection

I can think of better ways of saving the taxpayers a few bucks than foregoing Secret Service protection. I'm not a McCain supporter, I admit, but I don't think he's thinking clearly (once more!). Doesn't he remember the trauma this nation has suffered because of the assassinations and attempted assassinations of Presidents and candidates alike, not to mention Martin Luther King? Reagan was shot from up close and Ford's would be assassin was pretty close, too. There was even a little known attempt on Nixon's life, I believe. Any of those would surely have succeeded without the Secret Service. Robert Kennedy's murderer's location seem to be under renewed debate. In any case, not every would-be killer will be on the sixth floor or shooting from some roof top. I just spotted a post below that says he will accept protection. I agree that Hillary should stay in the contest. As an Obama supporter I will vote for Hillary if she nominated: no point in cutting off your nose etc:,: electing McBush. If Hillary's campaign has been tragic, a McCain Presidency would be disastrous. I hope Dems cool down enough before the General Election to realize that. presidential candidates have coattails: we need Dems in Congress. Two of the most "liberal" members of the Supreme court are barely hanging on. Imagine a couple more Alito's ? The huge number of new Dems in Pennsylvania does worry me some. Has anyone really looked into Limbaugh's "Operation Chaos"? Pennsylvanians , give us some input here? As for Hillary's campaign, I cling to the idea that she has bad advisors who have her in a bubble. I won't write her off, but I sure wish she would stop with the "Barack's not a Muslim, AS FAR AS I KNOW..." crap. I just wish BOTH candidates used their ammunition exclusively against McCain. Ms. Clinton has the potential for a great career, whether as president or Senator. She's smart, knows the levers, has been a pretty good Senator with potential for going far. I don't want to see her destroyed by "friends, advisors" who will get paid win or lose. I like "We'll be fine" Hillary. Something in that was coming from herself. Maybe some of our intrepid reporters should go to Rev. I'm tired of this. Someone near and dear to me has been going to the same church for over forty year, even though the pastor favors Gay Rights and marriage. This person strongly opposes Gay marriage, but he keeps going to the same church, even sings in the choir and has served as a deacon. He otherwise likes the pastor and the church. Everybody can't agree with everyone on everything all the time, and I think Rev. Wright has had his (justifiably) angry moments and thinking. I'm white and if my ethnic group had been through what his has endured for so long and untill very recently in the course of history, and still endures, I'd be pretty damn mad, too. In fact I am mad, though I will never completely understand what being Black in this country has meant. We are not just voting for a president. I pray someone can end this destructive feud between the campaigns and that Dems won' toss awaycontrol of the entire government no matter who the nominee is.! posted 03/26/2008 at 17:05:27

The Tide Is Turning

Always loved the song and am glad it was rolling around in your head. I don't care much what Roger Water's family's politics were. Anyway if you really look at your history, being a Communist meant a lot of different things depending on when and where you were. In the '60's my fervent ly republican father was turned down for a government job because the FBI turned up a great uncle who was an honest to God card carrying Communist working as a labor organizer in the steel mills of Gary, Indiana. The other great uncle they turned up, the one who fought with the White Russian army against the Reds didn't seem to balance things out.
The song that rolls around in my head is something like "I'm on my way, to the Promised Land..." 'We're on our way, we're on our way....'' My husband liked the "Yes We Can" video so much, he put it on his (musically oriented ) website, and now he's added your inspiration, Bob.(http://southernsoulrnb.com/corner2008.cfm) This is my apolitical huband who usually has no use for politics at all, but Barack got him going this year. posted 03/30/2008 at 13:21:55

"Obama's Test" or Ours?

I understand your feelings exactly. Unfortunately, though, we will all end up paying no matter what, and John McCain will more than likely raise the price tag in more ways than one. posted 03/25/2008 at 15:03:42
Not much time athe moment to opine extensively, but I think we are looking at (and for) a new paradigm in earnest. It happens every so often in the formation of a third party. This time it just happens to fall within an established party.
It is from the numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centres of energy and daring, those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression or resistance.

Is "Success" Of Iraq Surge About To Unravel?

Who of anyone following this war and the slightest knowledge of the history of the region, recent oar long past, could possibly believe things wouldn't come apart despite our best efforts? The killer bees are out of the hive. They will attack anything that gets in their way. Unfortunately it required Saddam to keep them under control, but we tipped over the nests. posted 03/25/2008 at 16:27:23

McCain Says US Succeeding in Iraq

Well sort of, enoughalready. I'm not sure he has the smarts (Sunni V. Shia) or arrogance ("So?"). I understand he has a temper. That and his "Senior moments" worry me most. I' not agist: I've spent 12 years working with some very old and very smart , with-it older folks, but I worry that he seems a little befuddled at times, and from my experience that is a frequent cause of major temper tantrums. I'm not a doctor, just a lowly social work type, so I wouldn't want to try any diagnosis. It's just an uncomfortable feeling I have, not voiced more than once before to anyone. It doesn't seem fair. But I can't shake it, and it has nothing to do with right v. left, Dem.v Repub. Back when, when I didn't know the details of the matter, I was sorta half-way ready to see Sen. McCain run on the same ticket with John Kerry. But now I can't shake the feeling that McCain would continue the present policy simply because it is the path of least resistance, would require little effort versus seeking new strategies. It's a touchy subject, since I've spent years trying to dispel myths about "Senior Citizens", just as we all deal with racism, sexism and other -isms.I say all this hesitantly. Does anyon else get this feeling? Who came up with the term "Senior moment" anyway? It's pretty offensive, but sometimes these things inadvertently carry a grain of truth. posted 03/25/2008 at 16:18:50

A McCain Moment: Do You Want Four More Years of This?

We're looking at a disater beyond what we can imagine in the making if this guy is elected. This country has survived a lot of disasters, but this is really pushing the envelope. Can we really "roll the dice" on this befuddled (there, I've finally said it) American hero just because he is an American hero? posted 03/24/2008 at 19:04:56

Cheney On 4,000 Dead Americans: They Volunteered

My TV has survived nearly eight years of this man and his friends, but his answer so stunned me that I nearly didn't survive. "So?" So offhand. So unfeeling. So hateful and disrespectfulof the people who have died and SO disrespectful of the American people! I must admit to some pretty nasty thoughts at that moment, and had I voiced them and been asked about them, I would have said "So?". posted 03/24/2008 at 16:14:27

Clinton, Obama Reconciliation Becoming More And More Impossible

Really too bad for this country! We need both of these wonderful people opposing John McBush in some capacity. Kennedy and Johnson were not fond of each other. Nor were Ike and Nixon. One can always hope that the supporter for each of these candidates will be smarter than certain advisors and the media will stop deliberately spoiling for a fight. The media loves the noise and attention. The advisors just love the money. How about a little love for the country?! posted 03/23/2008 at 21:27:41

The 100 Years War

Liz, Absolutely BRILLIANT! But I'll bet Georgie had nothing to do with thinking it up. Too bad he is not the "Decider" he thinks he is. If he were really in charge, we probably wouldn't have the mess we have and the potential for worse. After all, the governor of Texas really is just sort of a figurehead, right? I imagine Georgie has really done just about as little as prez as he did in Texas (except signing death penalty warrants, which kept him pretty busy, I guess). I keep trying to get my senators to pay attention to Biden. Hope everone else is doing the same. I think my Dem senator is ALMOST convinced. posted 03/21/2008 at 15:06:34
