I grew up during the Great Depression, a much happier time than the present. America might have been hypocritical and short sighted in many ways then, especially on race, but it was a nation that tried to do right and was interested in learning. For all our faults, we stood tall in the eyes of the world because we wanted to improve. Now, after much struggle and some progress, I see nothing but regression: we have become the world's leading hypocrits, bullies, and -- as strange as it sounds -- a nation of slaves. We are so blinded by our ignorant arrogance that we cannot even recognize that pathetic fact. That we no longer stand quite so tall is obvious. But how many of my fellow countrymen even recognize that? We keep hearing how we are the greatest, the best, and how all that Anti-Americanism is just envious people who hate our goodness. What a crock! But far too many of us believe it!
I am old and do not see well. I recognize words by their general shape rather than by their spelling. Still I probably read more than most of my younger countrymen. I have had a happy life but I am not happy with my nation now. And I am not happy with the future I see for my grandchildren, who will be paying dearly for the stupidities we indulge in today.
