McDonald's Makes Jesus Cry

This is really funny! This about as bizarre as their renouncing polyester when one manufacturer also produced contraceptives.

Eating organic? Wearing natural fibers? The Religious RIGHT???? It just doesn't square with the televangelist pot bellies and wrinkle-free clothes. OMG - pretty soon they'll be on the 700 Club with unsprayed HAIR!

But we'll still know them by their supercilious smirks. And floppy Bibles they'll be waving in our faces. Some things are forever. posted 07/08/2008 at 16:54:14

Obama Wants To Expand Bush's Faith Based Programs

One does not need the exact words to understand the right. Read Jefferson and the other founders to see their concern. In Massachusetts, the lack of separation forced non-Congregationalists to pay into the Congregational churches. Only after the Constitution forbade government to interfere and to support one faith position over another, were Baptists FINALLY free to establish their own congregations and not have to pay for the Congregational ones. You do NOT want the government deciding this for YOU. This is what protects you to be anything you and your peers choose. Which religions should we fund? Which ones not? It's not at all a limitation on your rights - it protects them. posted 07/01/2008 at 11:49:31
I work for a faith organization that repudiates these initiatives. The U.S. has long given funds to groups that do NOT discriminate or proselytize, but these initiatives allow recipients to do both. I do not want ANY tax money going to that! I respect faith groups as non-profits with tax exemption to do work that would otherwise go undone, SO LONG AS it does NOT involve what has become commonplace - political partisanship. We've lost our way as a nation - we are NOT a Christian nation, we are a nation of no religious at all in which anyone can practice or NOT as they so choose. To support religious evangelism is to distort the very meaning of democracy and free choice in faith matters. For Obama to pick up this issue is disgusting. Shame on him! posted 07/01/2008 at 11:47:10
Amen! I cannot believe his advisors - they're frightening him into not being himself!!! He needs to repudiate NAFTA, warrantless spying, faith-based initiatives that permit discrimination. If he plays to the right, then he has BETRAYED us! I did not want Clinton because she accepts all of that - so what good is it for any of us if he picks up her agenda?????

BETRAYED! posted 07/01/2008 at 11:04:45

Obama Vows To Expand Bush's Faith-Based Programs

Let's get this right - Obama does NOT want to keep the Bush office but to scrap it entirely and replace it with something both utterly Constitutional and driven by the same community-organizing momentum he knows from his own past. We've funded solid faith-group projects without problem for decades - it was the Bushies who changed this to a completely illegal and partisan effort. Obama, in stories OTHER than this one, made clear the separation of church and state MUST be maintained, and that the partisan crap of the Bush administration was OVER. On this he has my support. The story, not the man, was wrong. posted 07/01/2008 at 14:19:51

McCains Defaulted On Home Taxes For Last Four Years, Newsweek Reports

Lots of us middle class folks (under $100K per year) have family trusts to help our kids keep a little bit when we pass on. It's a great foil for avoiding probate and all the fees. I'm not wiped out that Obama has one - it's good sense. But the issue here is TAX avoidance! Everyone screws up once in awhile - file an extension, forget the second deadline (I've done it) but YEAR after YEAR???? Mmmm - don't think so.

Obama is hardly the 'elite' here. He's done well largely through his own work, while McCain married 'up' to get his. Least he can do is pay his TAXES! posted 06/30/2008 at 13:19:54
And unlike Newt who claims he's 'forgiven' because he asked the Lord to do that (the results, of course, are still "out"...not his call!) McCain is not a born-again, so how does he write this little indiscretion off the books? posted 06/30/2008 at 13:11:11

Tension In Unity: Clinton Donors Give Obama Cold Shoulder

This morning MSNBC had a completely different take and that was the willingness of the audience of donors to listen to her speak for him. From the cell phone camera coverage, all seemed to be easy and relaxed.

Serenity Lost: Obama And The Netroots

Working for a group that likely was the victim of a warrantless intrusion into email, I still understand what ALWAYS happens in DC - bills come with crap you cannot stand, but stuff you really want. Until we end the ability of Congress to lard bills with 'killer amendments" choices will always have to be made - do you go for the gold and remove the tarnish later or kill the whole thing?

Clinton is not a progressive, never has been. She works for corporate America, period. A kinder, gentler corporatism, to be sure, but like the corporate liberal allies of the previous century, she and her financial supporters want to assure their own control over the economy and polity. As an early US Steel executive said of their c. 1901 labor - we will share money and benefits with our workers. We will never, ever share power.

With Obama, sharing power ultimately is far more possible. than it would ever be with almost anyone but Kucinich and Edwards. Obama needs to stay on course with us, but I do forgive him the choices that are endemic to Washington politics. Ultimately he must work to change THAT - but he cannot do it until he's President. posted 06/25/2008 at 12:22:42

Nader: Obama Trying To "Talk White" And "Appeal To White Guilt"

It's not Nader who will keep Obama progressive but Edwards and Kucinich. Nader is just one nasty-minded elitist with an ego as big as Texas. His consumer legacy cannot be impeached, but his rapacious desire for power cannot be tolerated. Obama has a core. I believe it will prevail. I look to the other candidates on the progressive side to help keep him there! posted 06/25/2008 at 12:28:34
This is appalling! Nader sent women down the river on choice last time. Now he's sending people of color down the river with disgusting stereotypes. I agree with most of the previous comments here- this is so racist and smarmy I cannot believe he SAID it.

He's looking more and more like a nasty white guy who'll do anything to win. Well, he lost me years ago, and I was a BIG fan. posted 06/25/2008 at 12:24:21

If I were a Black woman in America, I'd not be all that proud of this nation until now either. The hypocrisy and bigotry are present and denied. Rapture-Ready Evangelicals Impersonate Army Officers -- Bush Administration Gives Organization Members Award

For the extreme right-wing Christians to pretend to be military personnel is appalling. It gives their screed the force of military authority - quite what this "born-again" President wants to convey. Be afraid - very afraid - of the dominance of these people in the military. Evidence is coming clear that our soldiers in harm's way get the cushy assignments if they ARE part of the family, and the dangerous ones if they are not. You just have to be Methodist or Presbyterian to be an outcast in This God's Army - and woe betide you if you are a non-believer, a Muslim, a Jew, or anything these self-anointed chaplains find unacceptable. You MUST believe that your mission in Iraq is to begin the process of clearing the way for Jesus' Second Coming. If you do not, you are an impediment to his return, to fulfilling of the prophesy they think is laid out in Revelations. Many real military commanders are part of this cult - and a number of them have their fingers on the button . We genuinely are at risk of their decision to "help" the prophesy along a little. Be wary - over the next few months, we may have a new 'crisis' that will require their intervention. These folks are NOT fooling around. Good job, Ms. Rodda. Not Until the Fat Lady Sings

The PARTY made the FL and MI decision, the states that chose to over-ride. It is not Obama's decision to make. Now that Clinton is behind, she wants the votes that she got when Obama worked by the rules and did not campaign - was not even on one ballot. I support a 'do-over', but it's not going to happen, so the rules are - those votes don't count. Blame your state legislature, not Obama. posted 04/01/2008 at 12:50:54
I'm not stupid. I look at his policies and his backers, but I am ALSO moved by his thoughtful and reflective speeches. No one can sustain these sorts of moral messages without those being the core of their personhood. If you like glib, that is your business, but the messages are hardly vacuous, they are precisely what George Lakoff argues are the ways to bring people together.

By trashing those of us who listen and heed what the man is saying, you are again dividing and demonizing us, keeping the politics of divisiveness at the center.

Obama has a moral center. It is steady and consistent. He is thoughtful and reflective. That's why he resonates with so many disparate voters. His is a message of inclusion. posted 04/01/2008 at 12:47:06

25% of Anti-Obama Dems Think He's a Muslim

Amen - and remember the Tuskegee experiments with syphilis done on Black men, and the Army LSD experiments done on Black men, and the Port Chicago court martials done to Black men - and on and on and on. As recently as four years ago, six Black men were found hanged in and around Springfield, MO. All were called 'suicides' despite the overwhelming evidence they were lynched. And I'm middle aged, middle class, female, and white and not easily fooled. And I KNOW Rev. Wright has reasons to be angry at persistent injustice - and to damn American failures to right those wrongs. I don't have to like his words to understand his fury. posted 03/28/2008 at 14:40:03
He is neither. He is a decent, moral, and insightful leader who offer us a chance to come together in unity around issues that beg for reconciliation. posted 03/28/2008 at 13:10:52
We already do. Interfaith respect is the CORE of our existence since it is not even whether you have a specific faith or any faith that garners respect. It's whether you believe in justice, equality, and fairness. You need to work on your definition of who is a "Christian" since there are data (Pew Center research) showing that the mainstream, progressive denominations equal the more conservative ones, and it is the former that base their faith on respect for all humanity and all beliefs. If all you pay attention to is the screaming hate mongers, then yes, that's what you will think of faith people. But open your eyes! Who do you think was in the leadership of abolition, civil rights, anti-war, abolition of child labor, rights of working people??? It was and is mainstream churches and faith people! Most were Christians but they worked in harmony with non-Christians, agnostics, and atheists all of whom were united by justice. It's not a tiny minority - it's the MAJORITY, and you've allowed Bill O. and Jerry, and Pat, and the recent crop to create your own prejudices. Get out of your own hate zone. It's not a shred better than Haggee's. posted 03/28/2008 at 13:09:42
And what would be the matter if he WERE a Muslim? His profound message is that of all real faith people - love, hope, commitment to one another, a strong moral center, and a belief that our basic decency can be made manifest. I really don't care what faith he is. I care that he believes those things. posted 03/28/2008 at 12:58:26

Big Mac's Blazing Saddle Diplomacy

McCain: Four more years.

The neo-con hawks support endless war from which they obtain massive amounts of riches. Not one thing McCain says is supported by facts. We have lived with the 'domino theory' for decades not because it's true but because it's so useful to keeping the military-industrial complex fully employed. Where are the national media to question the assertions? They opted out in 2003. They are doing so again. When the nation is obsessed with sex scandals of yore and the anger of one minister, we once again mindlessly march forward to support more of the very policies we currently hate that are destroying us domestically and our international credibility and security. These policies are treacherous and must be stopped, and their perpetrators and advocates must be prevented from continuing to make decisions that endanger us all. posted 03/27/2008 at 13:14:53

Clinton Owes Obama An Apology

Black people have the right to fear the government. The Tuskegee syphilis "experiments" were done over decades - on only Black men who died horrible deaths while being told they were getting well. During the 60s the Army did LSD experiments - on Black men. Even subtle failures of decency cost lives - no one would even consider ways to stem the passage of AIDS within minority communities until it was rampant. We fund schools within the same school district - same tax base - differently depending on whether they are Black or white with the minority schools getting short shrift always. We sentence Black people differently from whites for the same crime.

And I am a middle-aged, non-hippy, middle-class white woman who can see all this and be horrified by this and be sympathetic to Pastor Wright's very real anger. Why would he NOT be angry? posted 03/27/2008 at 13:40:14
Nothing wrong at ALL in being Muslim. We've vilified that major religion thanks to 9/11 and its hideous warped aftermath of stupid bigotry. But no one is 'part Muslim' since you're pretty much one faith or another. I agree that you don't have to be a Christian to be President, but let's just accept Obama for who he is - a member of the United Church of Christ, the direct linear descendant of the Pilgrims and one of the most progressive Christian churches in America. That's quite cool. More power to him. posted 03/27/2008 at 13:32:40
Then remember the Clintons invited Rev. Wright to the White House several times for counsel during the Lewinsky mess.

Rev. Wright has no track record of bigotry or hate - if he did, you'd have heard of him long, long ago and there would be dozens, not just a couple, of videos from which to choose. If a man were that virulent, it could not be hidden. He has a right to be angry. We as a nation have not done our best to assure that democracy and equality are more than just empty words. posted 03/27/2008 at 13:27:33
Where in the world did you get that 'fact'? There is not a scintilla of evidence that the church is racist (being uplifting of your congregants is not racism) and it absolutely has NO record of anti-Semitism. What absolute balderdash! posted 03/27/2008 at 13:24:38
She might have acknowledged the systemic pain that caused Pastor Wright to speak as he did. She might have admitted that Black people in this nation have a right to be angry. One does not have to like the words to understand the fury another person might feel at the persistent discrimination people of color undergo in this nation.

But most of all - she might have admitted she and her husband also sought Pastor Wright's care and counsel because he is so kind and so healing and that his anger is so rare. She might have admitted that Pastor Wright WAS their pastor in their own times of need.

That would have been honest. posted 03/27/2008 at 13:22:04

That stuff is so old that it has already worn out its capacity to do harm. Voters who stood with Obama will continue to support him, and that crosses racial lines, class divisions, and all populations. He showed in his speech that he not only understands policy but the vast historical panorama of who we are, good and bad, as people and as a nation. If we fall back on the 'old politics' of angry division, then NO one is electable who provides fresh air and decency as an alternative to our historic anger. posted 03/24/2008 at 13:44:22
