Pope Benedict is Living in Denial

Only someone nearly devoid of reason (perhaps someone 'educated' in Catholic schools) would make such an inference based upon what Press actually wrote. We all know that other people, in addition to some Catholic priests, have molested children. What is despicable (though not at all surprising, from an historical point of view) is the sheer crassness displayed by the church toward the victims of this outrageous behavior. As for the Pope, it really does the church no further good to have ex Hitler youth in such a visible position, but then this must be yet another case of credo quia absurdum. On a more practical note, you can bet your sanctimonious soul that my child will never get within shouting distance of a catholic priest while I have anything to say about it. posted 04/21/2008 at 10:05:00

Keeping Students Awake ... and More Productive ...

This has some good ideas. The notion of academic achievement would also need to be re-examined. There are a lot of students who are so bored and disaffected that they appear less capable than they really are. posted 04/21/2008 at 19:41:05
Yes, this is clearly true. The difficulty involves using the 'green' label solely as a gimmick, (which is nothing you have implied). A lot of the language around the 'ecology' and 'environmental' movements has been hijacked. Deconstructing these terms and relating them to science and history would be tremendously beneficial to students. It would help them to see through a lot of blather in the culture at large and make truly informed decisions. Decisions grounded in verifiable facts.

Hey, it's a great post, by the way. posted 04/20/2008 at 13:42:45
So many things can be done to improve the environment at high school that cost very little money. The 'Green' label will be used to generate a lot of hype. Incorporating the science of 'going green' (already this is a tiresome slogan) into the high school curriculum would be very beneficial. So too would be an education in worker rights vis occupational health and safety issues, since any employer who endangers the health of workers is the proper subject of legal action. High school students need to get more sleep in any event, and they shouldn't be indoctrinated into worrying about their 'productivity', since it is education we are talking about. Not some benighted human resources task. posted 04/20/2008 at 09:23:35

University patent managers versus developing countries

It's no surprise that universities would align themselves with the pharmaceutical industry since they have already been infected by industry funding to such an extent. They hope to benefit further from the same monopolies. Developing countries should pursue their research interests without regard to international pharma tactics. They should focus on growing their own research infrastructure and create their own IP. They don't need 'guidance' (really nothing more than interference in the name of profit) from foreign institutions know by all to be somewhat corrupt. posted 04/20/2008 at 09:35:20
