Here's one of my favorite quotes that should give you a clue about where I'm coming from.

Conservative Hippie (a Hillbilly definition) - 1. One who believes that we as Americans, participants in this global experiment, have to learn to work together as communities to gain independence from the corporate powers that dictate our "costs of living". Waiting for the gov't to make this happen on our behalf is effectively going in reverse.
That to be better able to help those abroad we first need to be competent at taking care of ourselves and steps in the right direction for making that a reality would be working together as communities to generate our own power and taking back our food supply. If we could eat more homegrown/local foods the health benefits would overide any extra costs. Besides becoming a healthier society, we could do our individual and collective parts to keep money circulating in Main Street's economy thus lessening the control of Wall St.
That another step toward our independence would be serioius efforts to become less materialistic as a culture. "Keeping up with the Jones" should become a thing of the past as we find the fulfillment of our lives as Humans Being. Since we know how the powers that be operate, we can just play along by the rules of the game in a way that allows us take our power back and take on a larger role in the direction of our Republic and this world by "simplifying" our lives as much as we can.
That all, We the People, need from the gov't as we lead into the future is the freedom to help each other help ourselves. As they write the laws with corporate loopholes our congress needs to allow us the liberty necessary to work on our own behalf in, at least, as generous a manner. The gov't is bloated and wasteful and that has to change, cuts need to be made in areas that enable us to fashion a system that we can maintain at a more reasonable cost to the population. It's in our power to eliminate the need for some programs as a citizenry, by regaining our independence from the corporate masters in little ways, so efforts can be concentrated on making sustainable the programs we all depend on.
2. Also claimed by some on Huffington Post to be an oxymoron.
