"Truthiness is tearing apart our country, and I don't mean the argument over who came up with the word...
It used to be, everyone was entitled to their own opinion, but not their own facts. But that's not the case anymore. Facts matter not at all."
Stephen Colbert

"When fascism comes to America, it will be draped in the flag and carrying a cross."
Sinclair Lewis

"The civil rights of none shall be abridged on account of religious belief or worship, nor shall any national religion be established, nor shall the full and equal rights of conscience be in any manner, or on any pretence, infringed."
James Madison, Deist. Original wording of the First Amendment; Annals of Congress 434 (June 8, 1789).

According to the U.S. Dept. of Treasury, the motto 'In God We Trust' came about due to increased pressures to recognize God on coins and money during the Civil War. In April 22, 1864, Congress passed an Amendment authorizing the motto to be placed on the two-cent coin. It appeared on various coins throughout the years, and appeared on paper money in 1957. The phrase was eventually printed on all paper bills, superseding the motto "E Pluribus Unum" (From Many, One) adopted by the Union in 1782.

The Pledge of Allegiance was created in 1892 and did not have the words "under God" added until 1954.

"The way to see by faith is to shut the eye of reason."
Benjamin Franklin, Deist. Poor Richard's Almanac, 1758.

"Religious controversies are always productive of more acrimony and irreconcilable hatreds than those which spring from any other cause. I had hoped that liberal and enlightened thought would have reconciled the Christians so that their religious fights would not endanger the peace of Society."
George Washington, Deist. Letter to Sir Edward Newenham, June 22, 1792

"We shall be judged more by what we do at home than what we preach abroad."
John Fitzgerald Kennedy

"The de facto censorship which leaves so many Americans functionally illiterate about the history of US foreign affairs may be all the more effective because it is not official, heavy-handed or conspiratorial, but woven artlessly into the fabric of education and media. No conspiracy is needed."
William Blum

"Censorship always defeats it own purpose, for it creates in the end the kind of society that is incapable of exercising real discretion."
Henry Steele Commager

"Homophobia is like racism and anti-Semitism and other forms of bigotry in that it seeks to dehumanize a large group of people, to deny their humanity, their dignity and personhood.
For too long, our nation has tolerated the insidious form of discrimination against this group of Americans, who have worked as hard as any other group, paid their taxes like everyone else, and yet have been denied equal protection under the law. I believe that freedom and justice cannot be parceled out in pieces to suit political convenience. Like Martin, I don't believe you can stand for freedom for one group of people and deny it to others."
Coretta Scott King
