McCain Benefits From Protracted Democratic Race

Because Obama is ahead of Clinton by a practically insurmountable lead (over 6%; Clinton would have to win by greater than a 20% margin in every remaining contest to catch up) in elected delegates, and there's no way pledged delegates will overturn than except if there were a catastrophe (Rev. Wright is way too insignificant to count). Does that answer your question? posted 03/24/2008 at 20:04:48

Obama's Grandmother

Conor, Thanks very much for the article and the links. I listened to the entire conversation and it was well worth the hour. I agree with your argument that it is a (perhaps purposeful) misinterpretation of Obama's speech to suggest he sees Rev. Wright and his grandmother as morally equivalent. I would agree with the interpretation of John McWhorter and Glenn Loury: That intimacy, like that between Obama and his grandmother (and by extension others like her in "the white community") and that between him and Rev. Wright (and by extension others in "the black community"), transcends differences on specific issues, even painful differences (like having early-taught and entrenched fears of blacks, in the case of his grandmother, or making a few divisive statements in the case of his pastor). In other words, Obama is trying to say that he understands and loves both these people, despite their flaws, and furthermore because he understands these flaws can help the nation to move beyond them. And he asks the rest of us for our help... posted 03/24/2008 at 19:14:04

TNR Road To Denver Cover Features Photo Mix Of Obama, Clinton

'The suggestion that Obama isn't ready to be commander-in-chief is "unusually corrosive," Davis complains. Indeed, when I asked various Republican and neutral Democratic operatives to name the most damaging twist in the primaries, most cited this same critique. "It's very good messaging--that he's not fit to be commander-in-chief," crowed one Republican strategist. "When you get the Democrats saying it, that's kind of the nuke in the whole thing." One of his Democratic counterparts was even more blunt: "It's one thing for John McCain to say [Obama's] not as muscular. It's another thing to have a girl saying it. It has some influence on swing voters.' Could someone from the Clinton camp address this, please? Notice how this refutes the argument that I have often heard that Clinton's attacks do not damage Obama's chances, should he become nominee, of beating McCain since McCain would make similar attacks. So, do Clinton supporters still condone her unprecedented "McCain and I are ready to be CiC but Obama is not" attacks? posted 03/24/2008 at 19:45:39

"Just about every superdelegate and party operative I spoke with endorsed Nancy Pelosi's recent suggestion that pledged delegates should matter most." This is not surprising, but a relief nonetheless. It would be very bad in the long run for the Democratic Party to allow the rules to manipulated in the middle of the game to the advantage of one candidate. Yes, superdelegates should use their best judgement. And this judgement should principally recognize that the most important measure of the voters' will, that around which the primary system is built, are elected ('pledged') delegates. Only a catastrophe (orders of magnitude more significant the the Rev. Wright so-called 'scandal') should change their minds. posted 03/24/2008 at 19:34:18

She may not even have lied about the incident, as she may not remember it clearly. But to pretend that she did remember it clearly and portray it in the most favorable possible light is even worse, since it means that she isn't honest with herself or with us about what she is certain of and what is in doubt, and because she can't admit when she's wrong. Nevertheless, this shouldn't be a big deal and should be taken in context, just as Rev. Wright's most controversial remarks should be. Peter Daou, please define "virtually tied" for us, as your campaign's definition seems to change with every contest (reminiscent of Bush's definition of victory in Iraq). Obama currently leads Clinton by about 6.5% (according to CNN and Real Clear Politics) in elected ('pledged') delegates. This lead so large for this stage of the campaign that your own camp admits it will be virtually impossible to overcome it in the small number of remaining contests. posted 03/24/2008 at 16:29:58

Do you have any new (preferentially constructive) 'thoughts' to bring to the discussion?

Many people didn't think the speech was great. Many people did. The important question isn't how avid Obama haters like yourself spin the speech to their partisan advantage. The question is what the majority of Americans thought, and whether it will help improve race relations in America. posted 03/24/2008 at 13:16:13

Stunning Climate Double-Talk From McCain Campaign

Um, have you noticed that oil prices are rising as supply diminishes? The pace of technological development is a function of investment, which is a function of profit and political will. Rising oil prices and decreased oil supply (and supply stability) will make alternative energies affordable within the next decade or two. It is already happening in many places, e.g. wind power in Germany. If our leaders make smart choices now, there is lots of money and jobs to be made and pollution to be prevented. posted 03/24/2008 at 17:20:09

I'm glad Clinton attacked Bush on this and proposed some ideas. 4000 US Soldiers Killed In Iraq

For the purpose you describe, a dictatorship would be much better than a "free state". It is apparent that the Iraq war has seriously destabilized the region, not stabilized it. It would be difficult to imagine a course of action more harmful to Middle East stability than that undertaken by Bush and likely to be perpetuated and even amplified by McCain. posted 03/23/2008 at 23:29:03

Why is it perplexing? Let me explain: YouTube can be both beneficial and dangerous, flip sides of a coin. The benefit is that The People have a new vehicle to distribute video (which is arguably the most powerful form of communication). The danger is that anyone can scour every available video for damaging soundbites (videobites?), which can subsequently be picked up and amplified by cable TV.

For me, what is perplexing is that so few of the YouTube users who watched the videobytes of Wright also watched the slightly longer videos that showed these snippets in context and gave much more information. (Of course, TV users don't have this option on that medium. Incredibly, even the 24 hour news channels almost exclusively present videobites.) posted 03/24/2008 at 11:37:18

Clinton, Obama Backers Go Off Message On Fox News Sunday

Caucuses and primaries attract different types of voters. Primaries are dominated by people who are willing to take an hour to vote, not an evening. Caucuses are dominated by those who have spent a lot of time learning about the candidates and so one evening is no big deal. Primaries are wide but shallow, caucuses are narrow but deep. Each is useful in different ways in selecting a nominee. Neither "skews the will of the people."

Even in the most typical, most predictable presidential elections, general election polls taken before one party has even selected a nominee are virtually meaningless. In this election, they are even less meaningful (if that's possible). For instance, how can anyone predict at this point how likely it is that some voter is going to cast a ballot? Voter turnout may well be one of the most important factors this year. Also, in the nomination contests, Obama has gained significantly (like, at least 10 points) in every state in which he has campaigned. He has barely had the chance yet to start his campaign against McCain, so don't expect current numbers to be meaningful. posted 03/23/2008 at 13:22:24

SuperDuper Delegates: How About Some Leadership?

Nothing has been "withheld". The lesson from this story is that the media can manipulate large percentages of voters simply by what tiny bits of information about which candidate they chose to release, and how they portray these sound-bites. This only works because typical (yes, typical) Americans do not research or think for themselves (because they're too busy, too accepting of authority, and many other reasons).

For instance, you seem to think some inflammatory parts of some of Rev. Wright's speeches are very important, right? Have you bothered to look at any more of his speeches, including the parts immediately before and after the sound-bites that have been played so many times (hint: it's available on YouTube)? Or have you researched other aspects of his church to satisfy yourself of it's character? Until you do, you are at the mercy of the media. posted 03/22/2008 at 12:48:01
