Obama Issues Response To RNC Attack Ad

And Obama's plan will make us less dependent on oil so we won't need the paltry amounts that exist off shore. posted 07/08/2008 at 12:19:21

Iraq Includes Timetable For US Withdrawal In Security Proposal

Of course this deafness is the result of $$$ being paid to the campaigns of our elected officials from oil companies and the military-industrial complex interests. They're making too much money by continuing our presence in Iraq. posted 07/07/2008 at 11:47:42

Pentagon Extends Tours Of Duty For Marines In Afghanistan

This just shows how important it is that we start pulling out troops from Iraq ASAP: Our military is overextended and has been for years. We need to pull troops out of Iraq (where neither the American nor Iraqi public wants them) down to a MUCH smaller level needed to support a much more limited (and realistic) mission so we can 1) keep our National Guard at home where they're suppose to be and most needed, 2) put the rest of our regular and reserve forces on the rotation schedule they're were suppose to be on (e.g. one year abroad and two years back in the case of the regulars) and 3) have more troops available for Afghanistan where the people who attacked us on 9/11 actually are. We should also be leaning much harder on our NATO allies to meet their treaty obligations. The people we are fighting in Afghanistan attacked us on 9/11 and intend on doing it again. posted 07/04/2008 at 11:16:49

GOP Looks To Redistrict Itself Back Into Power

Ah yes, the old Republican ploy of gerrymandering to maintain (or in this case, get back into) power. Hopefully the Republican brand will be as damaged locally as it currently is nationally in two years so this tactic won't work for them. posted 07/07/2008 at 11:30:21

Dow Negative During This Milennium

More evidence that neocon economic theory holds as much water as the "theory" of intelligent design. Now even the average stock shareholder is losing money under the Republicans. I guess the only people benefiting are the ultra-rich with foreign holdings valued in anything but dollars. Good job Bushie!!! posted 06/27/2008 at 08:05:49

Louisiana Gov. Jindal Authorizes Chemical Castration Of Sex Offenders

Absolutely! I was about to make the same point. These offenders will just impose their power in other violent ways. Also, what about those who are wrongly convicted? It seems that a week doesn't go by when another innocent man is released from prison when DNA or other new forensic evidence shows that he is innocent of the crime of rape. This rather permanent "solution" is rather barbaric and probably won't pass constitutional muster. posted 06/26/2008 at 10:26:52

Dems: We Have To Let Lieberman Screw Us Over

After the elections, when the Democrats secure a clear majority in the Senate, Sen. Lieberman should not only lose his chairman position on the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, he should be booted off all together and replaced with a REAL Democrat. If he is to be on that committee, the Republicans should give up one of their (probably shrinking number of) seats for him - which I doubt they'll do after McCain loses this fall. He should be completely marginalized and politically neutered. Connecticut can then replace him in 2012. posted 06/26/2008 at 10:37:58

Justice Department Looked For Liberal "Buzz Words" On Resumes

Now that we know for a fact what's been going on, what is going to be done about it? According to this article, the people involved in the illegal hiring practices are not going to answer for their crimes. Power Failure: McCain's Batteries Are Flat

First off, Sen. McCain's $300 million prize is just a gimmick. As was mentioned, whoever develops this magical battery is going to make a lot more than just $300 million. What is needed is $300+++ million in R&D money so that various university labs and small companies can develop this battery. But even if this battery existed today, how are we going to charge it? Electric cars would still be impractical because we would have to charge them on our already overburdened, carbon-dependent electric grid. We need billions spent over years to develop viable alternative energy sources and totally overhaul our energy infrastructure. Nice try, Sen. McCain, but you and your ilk still don't get it!!! posted 06/24/2008 at 12:29:15

Obama Backs Bill Giving Immunity To Telecoms

Well, if the telecoms get retroactive immunity as long as the courts are convinced these companies got an apparently legal order from the President to cooperate, it is IMPERATIVE that the Obama Administration track down the people in the Bush Administration that generated these bogus, illegal orders and prosecute them to the full extent of the law. PRESIDENT BUSH AND HIS ADMINISTRATION MUST BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR VIOLATING OUR CIVIL LIBERTIES! posted 06/20/2008 at 16:49:43

Neocons Busy Rewriting History On Iraq

The neocon version of the history of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is/will be nothing more than fiction... and bad fiction at that (just like their attempts to rewrite the history of Vietnam and the lessons that were learned there). Fortunately THEY will not get the last word on this and future historians will be the ones to pass judgment on the necon's poorly conceived, horribly executed and intellectually vacuous policies and actions. posted 06/21/2008 at 13:15:40

Big Western Oil Companies Set To Return To Iraq

I have an idea: Since our invasion of Iraq has opened up these lucrative business opportunities for these giant oil companies, THEY can can pay the $650+ billion the US has spent to give them this marvelous opportunity. Honda's Zero-Emission Car Unveiled: FCX Clarity

Actually, the carbon dioxide content of the atmosphere is ~40% HIGHER today than it was when the Vikings settled Greenland. One thousand years ago the carbon dioxide content of the atmosphere was around 275 ppm (parts per million) compared to today's value of ~385 ppm. Because of other climatic factors (most likely because the solar insolation being just a touch higher than it is today), the temperatures in Greenland during the 10th to 14th Century were comparable to those we now see there recently. It was the cooling during the Little Ice Age (caused by a marked decrease in solar insolation during the Maunder Minimum) that was a major contributor to the disappearance of the Viking settlements in Greenland during the 15th Century. posted 06/16/2008 at 14:11:24
I'm all for alternative fuels but using hydrogen is neither "zero-emissions" or really a viable alternative. First, the current dominant source of hydrogen is from the processing of natural gas - a hydrocarbon. And one of the byproducts of this process is the greenhouse gas, CARBON DIOXIDE. While the hydrogen-fueled vehicle might be "zero emissions", the process of producing its fuel is definitely not. You might as well just fuel your vehicle with natural gas to begin with - it would be more cost efficient. Second, you could make the hydrogen by electrolysis but this requires electricity and most of the electricity in this country is generated by burning hydrocarbons (mainly coal and natural gas) which still produces greenhouse gases. And yes, you can make electricity with other power sources (wind, solar, etc.) but this just places even more demand on this too-slowly-growing source of energy. Hydrogen-fueled vehicles are NOT a viable alternative to our current hydrocarbon problem in the short- to medium-term and leaves us with the same problems we have now. posted 06/16/2008 at 13:33:24

Monkey doll named for Obama called racist

Apologies up front to my good friends in Utah but this product can be explained by two facts: First, Utah is filled with conservative Republicans. And second, Utah is an overwhelming white state so that many of the residents have little experience in (or any day-to-day need for) racial sensitivity. posted 06/15/2008 at 07:49:50

Friday Talking Points [35] -- Tim Russert Memorial Edition

"Democrats start the election season with four all-but-guaranteed victories."

Well in the case of Sen. Kerry's seat in Massachusetts, it was completely safe to begin with (even before Mr. Ogonowski blew it by coming up a tad short on signatures). At best the Republicans would have gotten 25% to 30%. Still, it is good news about Virginia and New Mexico. posted 06/15/2008 at 04:47:17

Army's PR Shop Spreading Partisan Attacks On Obama

Two points: First, it's fine for people in uniform to have their own political opinions. What is not appropriate is for an official US Army web site to express partisan political views. That's the point here.

Second, as far as the Russians and Chinese, sure they are building up their forces but, in part, in response to the bloated size of our military. We are spending fully half of the world's annual military budget. Why??? While we certainly need a strong defense to defend ourselves, our interests and our allies, we are wasting hundreds of billions of dollars for weapon systems that have capabilities far beyond what we need to defeat our current or potential future adversaries. Why use a $1 million dollar pile driver when a $10 hammer will do the trick? posted 06/12/2008 at 17:55:42

Republicans Block Extra Taxes On Oil Companies

And Republicans are idiots for thinking that drilling in ANWAR will solve our energy problems. At best it would represent only a couple percent of US oil consumption and lower oil prices by a few tens of cents per barrel by the time the oil become available a decade from now. Stricter conservation measures, for starters, would be FAR more effective in reducing our need for imported oil than drilling in environmentally sensitive areas. And investments in developing alternative energy infrastructure would be FAR more cost effective then drilling in such areas not to mention start us down the path to true energy independence. posted 06/10/2008 at 16:40:58

I Finally Got It

For the sake of party unity (and keeping another Republican out of the WH), I am more than willing to forgive Sen. Clinton and move on to the general election with her playing whatever role is needed for a Dem win in November. On the other hand, I will not forget come the primaries in 2016 (assuming Sen. Obama wins the election and continues for two terms) or especially 2012 (assuming Sen. Obama does NOT win the election in which case I will remember Sen. Clinton's indirect role in that defeat) - either way, she will not get my vote. posted 06/08/2008 at 16:59:15

The Anti-Family Planning Movement: Coming to a Bedroom Nearest You

I can understand why some people are against abortion - I don't agree with them but I certainly understand their motivation on this topic. But against all forms of contraception? PAHLEEZE!!! While there might be a certain degree of sympathy with anti-choice protesters in the population at large, they will never gain anything approaching the same level of support for their goal of banning contraception. This sort of intrusion into our private lives to turn the clock back a half a century will to be tolerated by the vast majority in this country. posted 06/08/2008 at 13:22:25

Top McCain Aide: Bush Knows Little About Economy

"George W. Bush's policies on the economy, other than on taxes"

Yes, Bush's economic policies have been bad but his tax policies have been an utter disaster! And McCain's plan to not only make these tax cuts permanent but cut taxes even further is economically suicidal. There is no conceivable way to cut government spending enough to balance the Federal budget with Bush's tax cuts never mind McCain's additional cuts. Taxes need to be raised on those that can afford them so that we ALL pay our fair share. Federal spending also needs to be cut (e.g. from the bloated DoD budget with the wasteful war spending and unneeded Cold War era weapons programs) with more money invested in areas that result in a real return on that investment (e.g. education, health care, transportation infrastructure, energy, science research). posted 06/07/2008 at 14:13:47

Hillary Clinton Concession Speech: Suspends Campaign, Endorses Obama

If Sen. Clinton were to run as an independent against Sen. Obama and McCain, McCain would almost certainly win and Clinton's political career would be over. She would be marginalized in the Senate (she would certainly lose any meaningful committee positions and ANY influence she might have had) and she would not get reelected to the Senate in 2012 (in a state like NY, there are plenty of good Democratic candidate that could run against her and, having screwed her party by running as an independent, she would not have access to the party machine this time). And before you cite Sen. Lieberman as an example of an independent in the Senate, just wait to see how much influence he has after the next election when the Dems widen their majority. Guaranteed he will lose his committee chairmanship just for starters because of his support for Sen. McCain. posted 06/07/2008 at 09:51:20

Report: Secret Plan To Keep Iraq Under US Control

This "agreement", if it is actually finalized before the next president takes office, is not legally binding on the next president (as it is implied in this article). Only a treaty has the force of law and it unlikely that the Senate would pass it and even less likely that Bush will even present it to the Senate as a treaty to be approved. Considering how unpopular this agreement would be in the US and especially in Iraq, the next President (assuming it is Obama) could easily toss it out and start work on a real, legally binding treaty that satisfies all parties involved. It also would not stop Obama from removing troops from Iraq assuming he wins the election - again, this agreement would not be legally binding. Guaranteed that if this agreement is signed by the Iraqi government without the needed approval of its parliment, there will be a marked increase in violence against US troops. While I hate the thought of more Americans losing their lives in Iraq, it could help Obama's election prospects. posted 06/05/2008 at 13:42:13
