Last time I checked there were only about 12 million people in Illinois, and he has at least 13 million popluar votes.

50% of 13 million is 6.5 million, and 1,318,234 people from Illinois voted for him.

Now, if you want to say his LEAD in the popular vote centers around his home state, you'd be correct.
